The document discusses delusions in schizophrenia. Delusions are false beliefs caused by incorrect perceptions. They are defining symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The most common types are persecutory delusions, where one believes they are being harassed or conspired against, and delusions of control, where one believes external forces control their thoughts and behavior. Hallucinations can lead to delusions if they affect one's understanding or are derogatory. Understanding delusions and practicing mindfulness can help manage symptoms and boost self-esteem. While patients cannot control hallucinations, lifestyle changes can make their impact less harmful. Better understanding of common delusions can also help patients gain control and prevent negative symptoms.
2. Delusions are beliefs based on false or
incomplete information,
confabulation,dogma,illusion,or some
other misleading effects of perception.
Delusions are very crippling and
overwhelming when they are strong
and become pathological.In mental
illnesses such as schizophrenia and
bipolar disorder,they exist as the
defining symptoms. Understanding
delusions and having better control
over them is very important for the
mentally ill as well as for people with
psychosis and people who experience
some form of paranoia.
3. I am going to share mostly about the
existence of delusions in schizophrenia
because I am schizophrenic and have
experienced delusion in its many
forms. It is very much important to
understand delusions in relation to
hallucinations.Hallucinations are
perceptions in the absence of external
stimuli that have qualities of real
perceptions.The most widely
happening hallucinations in
schizophrenia are auditory and visual.
Schizophrenics listen to voices that
don’t exist as well as they see things
that aren’t there.
4. If we try to understand delusions in
terms of hallucinations,it opens doors
for better understanding and mastery
as well as better control over the
symptoms.The hallucinations mentally
ill people experience are of two forms
— cognition-related and mood-
related.Cognition-related
hallucinations are voices or images that
affect the person’s understanding and
lead to faulty perception.Mood-
related hallucinations,on the other
hand, are voices and images that are
derogatory and degrading.
5. Delusions occur when it is very hard
or impossible to understand what is
going on in one’s environment.They
happen when sufferers can’t get a grip
on themselves and what is going on.
They need an explanationfor what is
happening.
6. Persecutory delusions are the most
common form of delusions.They
involve the theme of being followed,
harassed,cheated,poisoned or
drugged, conspired against,spied on,
attacked,or otherwise obstructed in
the pursuit of goals.The other
common form of delusion is the
delusion of control.The delusion of
control is a false belief that another
person, group of people or external
force controls one’s general thoughts,
feelings,impulses, or behavior.
7. Mood-related hallucinations and
delusions are what lie behind the low
self-esteem schizophrenics suffer from.
Sufferers also show an inferiority
complex because of these mood-
related hallucinations and delusions.It
is very important that sufferers exercise
and train their minds with mindfulness
exercises and gratefulness practices.
8. For cognition-related hallucinations
and delusions to stop,the sufferer
needs a better understanding of the
condition he or she is in. Sufferers
need to be expert patients and try to
get every help as much as they can.
They should also try to understand
what is happening and going on with
their lives.
9. There exists some pattern in the
symptoms of schizophrenia and how
they occur.Hallucinations seem to
cause delusions and paranoia and these
psychotic conditions seem to cause
negative symptoms which include
apathy and some form of anhedonia.
10. Patients don’t have control over the
hallucinations.They find it hard to
control and stop them. But they can
do some practices and follow some
lifestyle choices to make alleviate their
bad impact.The hallucinatory voices
and images they experience may turn
to be helpful than harmful if they do
this.
11. In addition,if they have a better
understanding of the delusions that try
to overpower them most often,they
will be able to have control over the
effects of their illness. They are also
able to stop the negative symptoms
that would otherwise put them in a
depressing bad mood.
