Virtual reality uses head-mounted displays to immerse users in computer-generated 3D environments. It was first used for military flight training simulations and has since been applied to gaming. VR goggles use dual LCD screens near the eyes paired with lenses to generate stereoscopic 3D imagery. Popular VR platforms include Sony's PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR, and affordable mobile-based options using smartphones. The verdict is that wired, tethered systems provide better quality for a higher price, while untethered mobile VR headsets are more affordable but lower performing.
2. Meaning of Virtual Reality
• This is an environment which does not exist.
• It generates a Computer Generated
Stereoscopic 3d world.
• Virtual reality can be experienced just by
putting a Head Mounted Display (HMD).
3. History of Virtual Reality
• Back in the days virtual reality was used by
Airforce for flight training programme which
was much cheaper and safe as crashing the
virtual aircrafts.
• VR headsets make you believe that you are in
a distant world but in reality you are just
sitting on your couch and staring at a screen
tied up around your head.
4. VR GOGGLES
• The 3d virtual environment felt by the user is
made possible by the two LCDs for each eye
and the position of lenses between your eyes
and the emitting pixel. That is why it is
frequently called ‘VR GOGGLES’.
5. VR Products
• Sony Playstation VR :
Sony has upped the game
with this as user can now
experience the games in a
computer generated 3d
environment with a
display resolution of
1080p on 5.7 OLED
display.
6. HTC Vive
• This one here is one
high end VR headset
designed with ‘Room
Scale’ technology
creating a room into a
3D space with the help
of motion sensors in it.
7. Oculus Rift
• Oculus Rift was first
designed by a teenager
‘Palmer Luckey’ and
later on acquired by
Facebook. This is
getting popular with the
increase in gaming and
movie content on its
platform.
8. Google daydream
• Google’s daydream works
on the similar principle as
that of ‘Google Cardboard’.
It’s as simple as it can be.
Just put your Smartphone in
the shell and the picture
penetrating from the
mobile screen passes
through the lenses
converting the image in two
and making you experience
a 3D environment.
9. Samsung Gear VR
• The easiest way to get a
hands-on experience of
the VR world by placing
your Samsung Galaxy
Smartphone (Currently
supported by eight
models ranging from S6
to S8).It joined hands
with Oculus to build
gear’s software
ecosystem supporting a
handful of apps and
games.
10. Verdict
• If you are up to shed a $600-$800 then tethered
(Wired) is the pick for you as it gives you quality
for the money spent.
• However, if you want a keep your wallet heavy
along with the VR experience then inexpensive
Mobile HMDs ($100-$200) are for you. But
remember, these are not going to perform as the
standalone VR headsets as Smartphone screens
are not meant to provide a 3D environment.
