Homework
• Find a photo of a coastal area and on it label
at least 6 different factors that shape that
area, e.g. Relief, high land that stops erosion
from being too rapid

Factors that have led to exponential
population growth in coastal areas
LO: Factors that have led to exponential population growth in coastal areas
Coastalisation
• Movement of people to the coast.
• Causes conflicts are new homes are required by
sea and development can upset locals.
• In 1990 30% of worlds population lived on the
coast, by 2002 that had risen to 40%. Today 50%
of the worlds population live within 60km of the
sea.
• Coast becoming ‘loved to death’ – factors that
drew people there are being destroyed by them.
• So why are people flocking there?
LO: Factors that have led to exponential population growth in coastal areas
What has caused
exponential
growth of coastal
populations?
Accessibility Potential for fishing
Flat Land
Soil Fertility
Biodiversity
Equable climate
Recreation / tourism
opportunities
Industry & port
Development
TASK
Copy this down but add a sentence explaining each factor and an e.g. if possible
E.g. Flat land. This is essential for allowing any building to happen, especially large
scale industries. E.g. Tokyo Bay

LO: Factors that have led to exponential population growth in coastal areas
Coastalisation
• Human resources cause more development
too, such as;
– Skills
– Enterprise
– New uses for old buildings
– People providing services for each other
