Horizons was an Astronomy Quiz conducted by the Astronomy and Physics Society on 6 November 2018. The Quiz Masters are Arnav Deep and Aditya Baurai, members of the Astronomy Club.
4. 1. “But should the Lord Architect have left that
space empty? Not at all.”
Johann Daniel Titius mentioned this in a footnote to
his 1766 translation of Charles Bonnet’s
Contemplation de la Nature while observing the
layout of the solar system and the planets.
This was the first reference to what?
6. 2. In astronomy, the color index is a simple
numerical expression that determines the color of
an object, which in the case of a star gives its
temperature. The smaller the color index, the more
X (or hotter) the object is. Conversely, the larger
the color index, the more Y (or cooler) the object is.
Give X and Y. Part points applicable.
10. 4. This is an album art of a very famous music band
that makes a lot of references to astronomy, or
celestial objects in their songs.
The name of the album has one
such reference.
Give the name of the album.
12. 5. Just before a total X, dazzling Baily’s beads
appear where sunlight shines through the valleys of
the ____. The last bead creates the impression of a
diamond ring in the sky.
ID the phenomenon X.
14. 6. X is a partially reusable heavy-lift launch vehicle
designed and manufactured by Y. It was launched in
February 2018 with a one-of-a-kind, unique dummy
payload. The payload, a personal artifact of Y’s
founder, is the first of it’s kind to go into outer space
and it carries a “Starman”. The payload is now an
artificial satellite of the Sun.
What is X and Y? Part points applicable.
16. 7. Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto were the first
celestial objects found in January 1610 to orbit
another planet. They are named after lovers of
Zeus. These four satellites were discovered by X
and are the largest celestial bodies in the solar
system, after the Sun and the eight planets. Later,
astronomers renamed them ________ moons.
Identify X.
18. 8. One of NASA’s Great Observatories, this was
launched in low Earth orbit in 1990 and still
remains in operation. This instrument showed the
world stellar Nebulas in color and images of
hundreds of galaxies in a small frame, like never
seen before.
What is being talked about here? (Images on next
slide)
23. 10. The _____ ___ ____ is a high-pressure region in the
atmosphere of X and is an anticyclonic storm. Such
storms, occur mostly on turbulent atmosphere on
giant gaseous celestial bodies.
ID X.
27. 12. Loki Patera is the largest ____ lake in the Solar
System. It is a very unique lake and such kinds of
lakes do not exist on the Earth’s surface. It resides
on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons. Io is the most
volcanically active celestial body in our solar
system.
What makes this lake so special? FITB.
29. 13. In 1994, a blackout in L.A., caused by an
earthquake showed the residents ‘something
sinister’ in the sky. It was the first time that the
residents saw anything like this and light pollution
came to be known after this incident. They were so
terrified by seeing a ‘large silvery cloud’ like thing in
the night sky, that they started calling 911, thinking
it was something extraterrestrial.
What was visible in the sky that night?
33. 15. Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka are three bright
stars in the night sky. They are also called three
sisters or three kings because they always appear in
a line, together. This line forms a part of X. They are
also identified as X’s Belt.
ID X.
35. 16. On the next slide is a photo of interstellar gas
and dust in the Eagle’s Nebula. They are 6000 -
7500 light years away from us and are in the
process of forming of new stars.
Due to their structure and the process they are in,
what are they so aptly named? (Image on next slide)
41. 19. "Through the iron-barred window," Vincent van
Gogh wrote to his brother, "I can see an enclosed
square of wheat . . . above which, in the morning, I
watch the sun rise in all its glory." Here, Vincent is
talking about a moment in the sky, just before the
sunrise.
Guess the name of the oil-on-canvas painting.
43. 20. The earliest recorded patent of this instrument
is a 1608 patent submitted to the government of
Netherlands by spectacle maker Hans Lippershey.
Galileo Galilei heard about this instrument in 1609
and made his own version of this for personal use.
Which instrument is being talked about here?
47. 22. Connect:
● Carl Sagan
● Greetings in 55 languages
● Sounds of wind, crickets, whale horn
● Music selection from many cultures
● The Pale Blue Dot
● Photos of Earth, land, water, human beings
49. 23. Also called Einstein-Rosen Bridge, X is a
structure that is supposed to exist somewhere in
the Universe. They were first predicted by
Einstein's theory of general relativity. They are a
favourite for sci-fi writers. Whether they actually
exist still remains to be a mystery.
ID X.
51. 24. Normal lens and mirror telescopes were unable
to detect light and EM waves coming from remote
stars and/or nebulas in deep space. This was
because the visible spectrum of light from these
bodies could not could reach the Earth. A solution
of this was _____ telescope. These kind of telescopes
could detect the high-frequency light that reached
us, beyond the visible spectrum.
What are these telescopes so aptly called?
53. 25. This word is derived from combining two
Japanese characters, ‘X’ meaning difficult to see and
‘Y’ meaning the dark, tranquil color of the universe.
The word means —
‘An awareness of the universe that triggers an
emotional response too deep and mysterious for
words.’
ID the word.
55. 26. In a binary star system, when a star shrinks into
a white-dwarf star and dies, it can revive itself by
feeding off the other star’s hydrogen. In this type of
cases, when the white-dwarf star explodes, only
half of its mass is lost and thus, the star is revived
again.
What are these types of stars called? (Image on
next slide)
