NEEDS OF PLANTS
By : Mr. Ariel Rosario Andiza 
Like us, Plants also need certain
things for them to be healthy and
for us to survive. These include
good soil, water, sunlight, air and
care.
Plants need good soil. God soil
contains nutrients that plants need
to grow. They should be given also
be given fertilizers to help them
grow healthy.
Fertilizers – are materials with
nutrients that can help plants to grow.
They may come from decayed leaves or
from manure of animals.
Water helps the plant bring the
nutrients it get from gets from the
soil to the leaves. Without the
water, a plant will wither and die.
Plants need the light energy in
sunlight to make its food through
photosynthesis.
Plants need air (Carbon Dioxide)
They need this gas to make food.
- Coconut trunk can be used as
posts for power and
telecommunication poles, and floor
tiles
- Coconut leaves Can be used as
temporary roofing materials. Their
midribs can be made into brooms to
sweep the yard.
- The young coconut fruit gives
buko juice. The fruit can also be
made into buko or jam.
- The mature coconut fruit can be
made into copra or oil.
- Coconut water is a nutritious
drink. It can be used as therapy for
some illnesses.
1. Plants gives us food to eat. We
eat root crops like carrot and sweet
potatoes; the stems of kangkong
and onion; leaves of pechay and
malunggay; fruits such as mango and
atis; and the seeds of watermelons
and squash.
2. Plants gives us wood for building
materials. Examples of these trees
are acacia, narra, and mahogany
3. Some plants gives us materials
for our clothes. Cotton comes from
the ripe fruits of the cotton plant.
Piña cloth comes from pineapple
fiber. This is an expensive cloth
which is also exported to other
countries.
4. Other plants gives us rubber and
paper. Tires are made from rubber.
Rubber comes from the latex of the
rubber tree. Another plant product
is paper, Most paper is made from
pulp of trees .
5. Some plants are used to treat
diseases. They are called medicinal
plants.
6. Trees gives us shade. They are
also homes to some animals.
- Most of the food you eat, such as
rice, fruits, and vegetables, are
parts of plants
- Some of the materials that
people use to make clothes comne
from plants. Examples: Leaves of
buri, Fibers of cotton and
pineapple.
- Plants provide materials that are
used for creating things,furnitures
or building structures. Example:
Mahogany and narra.
- Some plants are used as
ingredients in making medicines.
Examples: Guava, ginger, lagundi,
oregano and sambong.
- Plants are also used to beautify
surroundings. Examples: palm, San
francisco and etc.
- Plants also give off oxygen, a gas
that people and animals breathe.
- The roots of the plants help to
control soil erosion by holding the
soil particles together.
- Trees also prevent floods as they
absorbs the rain water that falls
on the ground.
- Most green plants grow from
seeds.
- Seed contains a dormant or
sleeping young plant. A seed has
three main parts: The seed coat,
the seed leaves or cotyledon, and
the baby plant or embryo.
- Plants like san francisco,
gumamela and bougainvillea can be
grown by cutting a portion of their
mature branches and planting
them.
- A bulb is a group of leaves that
grows under the ground. Onions
and lilies grow from bulbs.
- Shoots are young plants that are
not yet developed. Banana and
bamboo plants grow from shoots.
- Some plants grow from a mature
leaf like katakataka also called
kalanchoe.
