3. Aligning Your Expectations of a
Data Protection Solution with
the Realities of Today’s Trends
CURRENT TRENDS IN DATA PROTECTION
By Jerome M Wendt
President & Lead Analyst
4. Organizations have more choices in providers and products than
ever before when it comes to selecting a data protection solution
• 26 virtual server backup software solutions from 22 different
providers*
• 47 deduplicating backup appliances from ten (10) different
providers*
• 72 integrated backup appliances from 14 different providers*
• These numbers do NOT include the growing number of
deduplicating and integrated backup appliances also available
as virtual appliances

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
5. More features and options being hyped and/or offered:
• All-inclusive licensing
• Available in physical or virtual appliances (or both!)
• Backup, data storage and recovery in the cloud
• Deduplication
• Instant restores
• Snapshots at host and array levels
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
6. • Which of the features on
these products are real?
• If real, how many products
offer them?
Toughest Questions to Answer
7. 1. All-inclusive Licensing
2. Appliances – Physical and Virtual

Current Trends in Data Protection
10. TREND #1
All-Inclusive Licensing
• Definition
• All features included with the product acquisition price
• More Hype than Reality
• DCIG does see all-inclusive licensing but only on a
relatively small percentage of available offerings
• Common for start-ups or vendors looking to increase
market share to offer this as an option
• Reality
• Bundle most commonly used features
• Charge extra for specialized features
13. Observations
• Available from only a few providers
• Licenses may be capacity-based
• i.e. if you only have a 1 TB license, features are only available
for that terabyte of protected data
• Vendors measure capacity in two ways
– Data under management before it is protected
– Data under management after it is protected
– The latter is generally the more favorable licensing option
• Unrestricted licensing (not tied to capacity)
few and far between
• If a vendor offers it, the devil is in the details
TREND #1
All-Inclusive Licensing
16. • Definition
• Physical or virtual machine preconfigured to run data
protection and/or recovery software
• Physical Appliances a Force in Data Protection
• More than $3 billion spent on purpose built backup
appliances (PBBAs) in last 12 months*
• Virtual Appliances Coming On
• Not included in totals above
• Virtual appliances becoming more commonly available

TREND #2
Physical & Virtual Appliances
18. Observations
• Accelerate backup software acquisition and deployment
• Software providers taking time to introduce physical
appliances as they want to do it right
• Those that do offer physical appliance have seen rapid
end user adoption
• Expect to see more backup software providers offer both
physical and virtual appliances
• 30% of deduplicating backup appliance providers offer
virtual appliances
TREND #2
Physical & Virtual Appliances
22. Motivating Factors
• Physical backup here to stay for foreseeable future
• Centralize backup data for physical and virtual apps
• Create common body of backup expertise
TREND #3
Single Management Console for Data Protection
23. Motivating Factors (continued)
• Deploy right tool to solve specific backup or recovery challenge
regardless if physical or virtual application
• Simplified licensing
• More recovery options
• P2P, P2V, V2P, V2V
• Physical or Virtual -> Cloud
TREND #3
Single Management Console for Data Protection
24. • Integrating various, existing backup and recovery technologies
under a single console
• Arcserve
• Bundling multiple, complementary products under a single SKU
managed through a single interface
• Dell
• Unitrends
• Creating a data protection virtualization layer
• Leverages existing, in-place backup software
• Overlay it with additional, specific backup functionality
(eg. VM backup) and centrally manage all backups
• Cobalt Iron/IBM TSM
TREND #3
Single Management Console for Data Protection
25. • An emerging trend
• Facilitates taking a best-of-breed approach
to physical and virtual data protection
• All products are in various states of developing
integrated management interface
• Difficult to objectively measure integration
• Minimally test drive integration or get a demo
TREND #3
Single Management Console for Data Protection
28. Definition
Store and then recover your data with a 3rd party cloud provider
and even potentially recover an entire application or even your
entire data center at the cloud provider’s site
TREND #4
Recovery in the Cloud
29. *Source: Evolve IP Cloud of Dreams Survey: The Adoption of Cloud Services - 2014
Cloud Adoption is Real and Growing
Recent Survey of 1,257 IT Professionals Revealed:
• 88% believe the future of IT is in the cloud*
• 81% have deployed at least one service in the cloud*
• 73% cite disaster avoidance/recovery and business continuity the #1
benefit of moving to the cloud*
TREND #4
Recovery in the Cloud
30. *Source: Evolve IP Cloud of Dreams Survey: The Adoption of Cloud Services - 2014
The Big Challenge
The Challenge is Choice:
• Types of Clouds
• Underlying Technology
• Providers/Hosts
62% would prefer to rely on a single cloud provider.*
TREND #4
Recovery in the Cloud
34. Observations
• All sized enterprises view the cloud as the future of IT
• Midsized enterprises ($1M - $1B in revenue) are
particularly looking at recovery in the cloud
• New providers and capabilities becoming available all
of the time
• Recovery in the cloud and the capabilities available are
a mixed bag
• Using a single cloud provider is probably NOT yet a
reality for most organizations
TREND #4
Recovery in the Cloud
35. • Two of the trends are more hype than reality
• All-inclusive licensing
• Recovery in the cloud
• Provide with extreme caution
• Single management interface for physical and virtual
data protection and virtual appliances are rapidly
maturing and gaining momentum
• Integration may still be at the PowerPoint level
• Proceed with caution
• Physical appliances are the most mature trend
and may be confidently adopted
