Matsuo Bashō was a famous Japanese poet and essayist during the Edo Period from 1603 to 1867. He is considered the most prominent poet of haiku, writing haiku poems and contributing to the development of haikai no renga linked verse. Bashō spent his life traveling across Japan and writing about nature.
