1. APOSTROPHE:
Basically the word APOSTROPHE is came from Greek. It is a punctuation
mark. which is used to show possessions ,contractions, etc.
It has three cases. Which are given below
1. Show possessiveness;
2. Show contractions;
3. Show some plural forms.
2. SHOW POSSESSIVENESS
It is used to create possessions or ownership of singular or plural nouns,
especially the one referring to a person.
For singular nouns
For example:
1. The mayor's car.
2. A woman’s hat.
3. Samad’s cat.
3. For Plural Nouns.
If the noun is a plural then the apostrophe is used after the ‘s’.
1.The dogs’ park.
2. The boys’ room.
3. The Kennedys' family.
Nouns ending with “s”
If a name ends on ‘s’ then apostrophe is placed after that ‘s’.
For example:
1.Hasting’s pen. Incorrect.
Hastings’ pen. Correct
2.Texas’ weather.
4. CONTRACTIONS:
They can be used to create some contraction. That is, combining two
words into one by omitting letters.
For example:
1. I am can be written as I’m.
2. I have can be written as I’ve. Etc.
5. Apostrophe:
It is also used to form plural of digits and letters.
For example:
1. There are four e’s in word sheep.
2. She got three A’s and four B’s in the o’levels.
2. She dotted all her i’s very carefully.
It sometime also indicates omission of number in a date.
For example:
1.Summer of ‘99. etc.
6. Apostrophe: special case
If there exist irregular plural nouns then the apostrophe s (‘s) would come after the
noun.
For example: The children’s playhouse.
As for it’s , with an apostrophe ‘s’ indicates the contraction of it & is (it’s) while
simple ‘its’ shows the possessive case.
