TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING JOURNEYS
Travel To Learn aims to promote the process of student transformation, utilizing the unique context of Africa to help
students broaden their intellectual horizons and grow personally, cross-culturally, professionally, and as global
citizens.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
South Africa is a land of dramatic diversity with eleven national languages, a host of ethnicities, tribes and customs,
and a breath-taking world-in-one-country landscape. This program aims to introduce students to the sights and
sounds of this storied Republic. From their base in the heart of beautiful Cape Town, students will get to explore a
number of historic and culturally significant sites while discovering why the “Mother City” is consistently rated as one
of the best cities in the world. They will get to visit the world-famous Robben Island, take in the panoramic views from
atop of Table Mountain (one of the New7Wonders of Nature), and dine at the world-famous Victoria and Alfred
Waterfront. From here they head to Johannesburg, where they will experience the world-renowned Apartheid
Museum, spend a day enjoying the legendary Valley of the Waves, and tour the Cradle of Humankind. Travel To
Learn is proud to offer this South African experience and looks forward to welcoming you to the Rainbow Nation.

All Travel To Learn programs are administered by an expert Local Program Facilitator. The facilitator meets the group
of students on arrival at the airport and accompanies them for the full duration of their time on the ground. The

Once in Joburg is the newest edition to South Africa’s popular “Once” group of establishments. The hotel is located in
The Grove in Braamfontein - a fun, vibrant area set in a pedestrian zone which is fantastic for travellers to be able to
go out and explore the area! Once in Joburg invites you to share their passion for culture, travel & adventure.
Bakgatla Resort (Optional)
The Bakgatla Resort lies at the foot of the Garamoga Hills and offers accommodation to all travellers, who want to
explore the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Bakgatla offers facilities for families as well as retreats for couples and
discerning safari goers. The chalets have air-conditioning, a double bed in the main bedroom and three single beds in
the loft. A private patio and braai create the ideal space to relax outdoors.

Cape Malay Cooking Experience
Jasmina, a local Cape Malayan woman residing in Bo-Kaap, invites you into her kitchen. She will guide students
through a step-by-step process of making traditional Cape Malay dishes that are loved by locals in the community.
They can try their hands at mixing the right amount of spices and perfectly folding a samosa. At the end, they will sit
down and enjoy their 3-course home cooked meal together.
Penguins at Boulder’s Beach
Students will get to see the African Penguin up close on the walkway surrounding the colony! Boulder’s Beach is a
beautiful beach that is home to a colony of these wonderful birds, and is a must-visit destination.
Beach Clean Up to Assist SANCCOB
SANCCOB is non-profit organization that exists to advocate and rehabilitate seabirds. They will help coordinate the
beach clean-up and utilize the recyclable materials that are collected. This can help save a variety of animals that are
hindered by waste that ends up on beaches.
Robben Island Prison
Declared a World Heritage Site, the notorious Robben Island prison is where Africa’s political prisoners, including
former President Nelson Mandela, were kept during the colonial and Apartheid years of South Africa. The ferry
departs from the V&A Waterfront and tours of the island last around 3 and a half hours.
V&A Waterfront
Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town's working harbor, the V&A Waterfront
has become South Africa's most visited destination. Exciting shopping and entertainment venues are intermingled with
imaginative office locations, world-class hotels and luxury apartments.
Muizenberg High School Exchange
Muizenberg High School offers an interactive cultural exchange program for visiting student groups. A typical day
involves a combination of class time where students are paired up and group time with interactive cultural experiences
and debates.
Moyo at Zoo Lake
Zoo Lake is a tranquil retreat from the urban hustle and bustle of Joburg. By day Moyo offers a relaxed, family-friendly
atmosphere; as the African sun sets, beverages on the deck and fabulous live music set the tone for an extraordinary
evening of fine-dining and soulful vibes.
Satyagraha House
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Gandhi’s time in South Africa. The house contains an array of
photos and correspondence between Gandhi and Kallenbach, and provides a fascinating insight to the life on this
renowned historical figure.
Mall of Africa
The Mall of Africa is one of the largest malls in South Africa and offers a wide range of great shopping experiences.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Students participating in this program should be aware of and be prepared to handle the following essential elements:
• Walking long distances over uneven terrain
• The ability to engage with people from different worldviews who may behave in unexpected ways
Each student that takes part in our programs is required to have comprehensive medical insurance (travel insurance
is highly recommended, but not compulsory).
Students are required to sign and adhere to the policies outlined in Travel To Learn’s Participant Agreement Form.

The itinerary is correct at the time of submission. It is flexible and may be adjusted to meet students’ needs. In all
cases, we will do our best to preserve the quality of what is presented herein. However, we reserve the right to modify
the itinerary, locations, accommodations facilities and costs if any changes so dictate. All quoted accommodation is
subject to availability and confirmed numbers.
