INTRODUCTION
 In India mostly farmers (about 85%)comes under small and marginal farmers. In
near future, availability of land for cultivation will be reduce with increasing
population and rapid urbanization, degradation of land due to soil erosion and soil
salinity.
 As per estimate, in India more than 95% holding will be under the category of
small and marginal holders by 2050 (Agrawal R.L., 1995) .
 For solution of this problem, multi storied cropping system will be a potential and
efficient option to provide food, nutritional and income security to the growing
population of India (Awasthi O.P. et.al., 2008) . This has possible because of the
diverse agro climatic condition, enormous biodiversity, wide variation in soil
fertility, large cultivable land area in the geographical boundary of India.
 What is multilayer cropping?
 Why is it needed?
Multi-layer Cropping
Multi-layer Cropping is a system of growing crops together of different heights
at the same time on the same piece of land. It is also referred as multi-storied
cropping or multi-tier cropping.
This method will help the farmers to get a good yield and more earnings from the
same piece of land using the available resources. It also solves the problem of
feeding the growing population due to less availability of cultivable land.
Multilayer is made up of two words:-multi and
layer. Multi means many and layer means strata
of different height.
This type of cropping is mostly practiced in orchards and
plantations to make optimum use of solar energy even under
high plant density.

Objectives Of Multilayer Cropping
 Main objective of multilayer farming is maximum and effective
use of vertical space.
 Optimum use of per unit area of land for production.
 Harvesting of crops on regular basis all round the year.
 Conservation of water along with increasing productivity.
Principle of Multi-layer Cropping
 Multilayer Cropping is based on the principle of high-density
planting and making the ultimate and efficient use of manure,
water, land, labour and vertical space.
 This system of cropping also works on the principles of
minimization of production cost and inputs use, development of
organic and sustainable farming system in order to mitigate the
use of chemicals and ensuring the food and nutritional security to
each household.
Crops Nature In Multi-layer Cropping
 The crops which are planted underground or below surface soil
should be deep rooted and shade loving crops.
 Crops planted on the surface of the soil should be leafy.
Harvesting of these leafy crops is done directly by uprooting
them.
 The climbing plants should be staked properly for their growth
and development. These climbing plants can reach up to roof
structure, so, they should be properly managed with training.
 The straight growing plants should be pruned so that they don’t
occupy more space and their harvesting should be done after
harvesting of all.
Benefits Of Multi-layer Cropping
 It ensures an even distribution of income and employment throughout
the year by harvesting several crops concurrently
 Better use of growth resources ( sunlight, nutrient, water )
 Yield stability(suppress the growth of weed)
 Ecological stability i.e improved soil health & agro ecosystem.
 It reduces the effects of weather on crops and improves soil
characteristics
 It also helps in conservation of water and moisture in soil. Multilayer
cropping system conserves about 70% of water
 The amount of fertilizers equal for one plant in field farming is sufficient
to 4 crops inside multilayer structure.
 This method of farming reduces the impacts of high-intensity rainfalls,
soil erosion and landslides
 Multi-layer farming improves soil characteristics and adds humus to the
soil thus increasing soil fertility
 Growing multiple crops increases the biodiversity which is an effective
measure to control pest, weeds, and diseases.
 It helps in the optimum use of land for the agricultural production. Those
who have less amount of land can also produce large amount of
agricultural commodities.
The Process Of Multi-layer Cropping
 First of all you have to select a land.
 After selecting land, reclamation of land should be done. Different operation
such as primary tillage and secondary tillage should be done and large amount
of FYM and vermicompost should be added to soil.
 Then, we have to built a house like structure. We can use bamboo or other
wooden pegs to make framework of the house. The frame of roof can be
made with small bamboos and different grasses are spread over the roof. This
will prevent direct sunlight.
 It will be great if the pH of soil is near to neutral. If it is too acidic or too
alkaline the production will reduced severely
 In this method, four or five different crops are cultivated in the same
field in a specific time. It uses a multi-layer seed sowing method where
different vegetables and fruit crops are sown in deep, middle, top and
topmost layers of soil based on their respective root zone.
 The seeds of creeper vegetables such as bottle guard, bitter guard, etc.
are sown in small pits filled with a mixture of organic manure and soil
to facilitate germination.
 The grown seedlings are then stalked over a home-made trellis. The
trellis allows the area underneath to be planted with shade-loving
vegetables like turmeric, ginger, spinach etc.
Growth Pattern Of Crops
 In multilayer farming, different (4-5) crops have different growth rate.
 The first crop grows and matures inside the soil. The time taken for the
germination of deepest crop should be highest.
 The next crop should grow at the middle surface of soil and should
germinate faster then deepest crop and slower than topmost crop.
 Next crop should matures at ground level height and it should grow and
matures fastest if all other crops leaving the space for other crops.
 Final crop should matures at maximum height. Actually-It is fruit that
grows for long time. This need to be grown at certain spaces and should be
less in number.
Management Practices
 There should be made proper provision of staking for climbing crops.
 The leafy crops growing on surface should be harvested in regular
manner.
 There should be provision for insect traps within the structure.
 This type of cropping cannot be done in open places. So, we should
create a shading structure with bamboo and wild grass.
 Training of different crops can be done to make good space under the
structure.
 Weak seedlings should be removed and trellis should be made for
climbers.
 Too much irrigation can be harmful. So, proper irrigation should
be done to preserves the moisture.
Example/Model Of Multilayer Cropping
 Here, we are going to make multilayer cropping of Colocasia , Potato and
leafy vegetable like coriander (selected crops have different germinating
and maturation time)
 Colocasia is long duration crop. It is planted in the month of January. After
plantation,Colocasia takes (7-8) months for fully mature enough to harvest.
 For (2-3) months i.e during the germination time of colocasia the upper and
middle layer of soil remain unused.
 So, we sow the colocasia at the deepest layer of (25-30)cm in January.
Then, we select Potato.
 The Potato is sown at the middle layer of soil at the depth of (10-
15)cm from ground in the same month of January.
 Potato matures within (2-3) months And it takes (20-30) days to
germinate up to ground.
 We select a leafy vegetable which matures within a (20-30)days.
 This leafy vegetable is sown at the depth of 5cm from ground.
Now, our all 3 layers are occupied with crops that have different
germinating and maturing time. This creates multilayer system.
 In the month of January, the leafy vegetable is ready to harvest.
As soon as we harvest it, the middle layer crop i.e Potato
germinates out.
 After the harvest of Potato, Colocasia germinates out.
 At the month of October-We harvest colocasia. Then land again
becomes fallow for next two months until January. This 2 month
month can be utilized to grow any other crop according to the
season.
Research Findings
Vegetable Cultivation Under 3-tier
System in Bihar
Under this system three models were introduced in Vaishali and Samastipur
districts of Bihar and farmers were able to grow three different vegetables on the
same piece of land at a time.
Following three models are developed & demonstrated-
 Model 1: Bitter gourd + Cowpea + Elephant foot yam
 Model 2: Pointed gourd + Okra + Cucumber
 Model 3: Pointed gourd + Okra + Amaranths

Conclusion
 Multilayer system of cropping is sustainable method of cropping that is cost
effective and requires less labour . Therefore, people should be made aware of
this type of farming system.
 We know that many farmers in different countries are unwillingly killing
themselves because they work hard in their land but they don’t get good
production.
 Farmers who are willing to do work are deprived of different resources like
irrigation and good area of agricultural land. In this scenario, they can be
motivated to do multi-layer system of cropping which can ultimately solves all
these problem.
 This system of cropping can helps to uplift the economic condition of farmer.
Government should give top priority for this kind of farming system.

Multilayer Cropping : Ideal approach for better yield and increasing farm income

  • 3. INTRODUCTION  In India mostly farmers (about 85%)comes under small and marginal farmers. In near future, availability of land for cultivation will be reduce with increasing population and rapid urbanization, degradation of land due to soil erosion and soil salinity.  As per estimate, in India more than 95% holding will be under the category of small and marginal holders by 2050 (Agrawal R.L., 1995) .  For solution of this problem, multi storied cropping system will be a potential and efficient option to provide food, nutritional and income security to the growing population of India (Awasthi O.P. et.al., 2008) . This has possible because of the diverse agro climatic condition, enormous biodiversity, wide variation in soil fertility, large cultivable land area in the geographical boundary of India.
  • 4.  What is multilayer cropping?  Why is it needed?
  • 5. Multi-layer Cropping Multi-layer Cropping is a system of growing crops together of different heights at the same time on the same piece of land. It is also referred as multi-storied cropping or multi-tier cropping. This method will help the farmers to get a good yield and more earnings from the same piece of land using the available resources. It also solves the problem of feeding the growing population due to less availability of cultivable land. Multilayer is made up of two words:-multi and layer. Multi means many and layer means strata of different height. This type of cropping is mostly practiced in orchards and plantations to make optimum use of solar energy even under high plant density.

Objectives Of Multilayer Cropping  Main objective of multilayer farming is maximum and effective use of vertical space.  Optimum use of per unit area of land for production.  Harvesting of crops on regular basis all round the year.  Conservation of water along with increasing productivity.
  • 8. Principle of Multi-layer Cropping  Multilayer Cropping is based on the principle of high-density planting and making the ultimate and efficient use of manure, water, land, labour and vertical space.  This system of cropping also works on the principles of minimization of production cost and inputs use, development of organic and sustainable farming system in order to mitigate the use of chemicals and ensuring the food and nutritional security to each household.

Crops Nature In Multi-layer Cropping  The crops which are planted underground or below surface soil should be deep rooted and shade loving crops.  Crops planted on the surface of the soil should be leafy. Harvesting of these leafy crops is done directly by uprooting them.  The climbing plants should be staked properly for their growth and development. These climbing plants can reach up to roof structure, so, they should be properly managed with training.  The straight growing plants should be pruned so that they don’t occupy more space and their harvesting should be done after harvesting of all.

Benefits Of Multi-layer Cropping  It ensures an even distribution of income and employment throughout the year by harvesting several crops concurrently  Better use of growth resources ( sunlight, nutrient, water )  Yield stability(suppress the growth of weed)  Ecological stability i.e improved soil health & agro ecosystem.  It reduces the effects of weather on crops and improves soil characteristics  It also helps in conservation of water and moisture in soil. Multilayer cropping system conserves about 70% of water
  • 12.  The amount of fertilizers equal for one plant in field farming is sufficient to 4 crops inside multilayer structure.  This method of farming reduces the impacts of high-intensity rainfalls, soil erosion and landslides  Multi-layer farming improves soil characteristics and adds humus to the soil thus increasing soil fertility  Growing multiple crops increases the biodiversity which is an effective measure to control pest, weeds, and diseases.  It helps in the optimum use of land for the agricultural production. Those who have less amount of land can also produce large amount of agricultural commodities.
  • 13. The Process Of Multi-layer Cropping  First of all you have to select a land.  After selecting land, reclamation of land should be done. Different operation such as primary tillage and secondary tillage should be done and large amount of FYM and vermicompost should be added to soil.  Then, we have to built a house like structure. We can use bamboo or other wooden pegs to make framework of the house. The frame of roof can be made with small bamboos and different grasses are spread over the roof. This will prevent direct sunlight.  It will be great if the pH of soil is near to neutral. If it is too acidic or too alkaline the production will reduced severely
  • 14.  In this method, four or five different crops are cultivated in the same field in a specific time. It uses a multi-layer seed sowing method where different vegetables and fruit crops are sown in deep, middle, top and topmost layers of soil based on their respective root zone.  The seeds of creeper vegetables such as bottle guard, bitter guard, etc. are sown in small pits filled with a mixture of organic manure and soil to facilitate germination.  The grown seedlings are then stalked over a home-made trellis. The trellis allows the area underneath to be planted with shade-loving vegetables like turmeric, ginger, spinach etc.
  • 15. Growth Pattern Of Crops  In multilayer farming, different (4-5) crops have different growth rate.  The first crop grows and matures inside the soil. The time taken for the germination of deepest crop should be highest.  The next crop should grow at the middle surface of soil and should germinate faster then deepest crop and slower than topmost crop.  Next crop should matures at ground level height and it should grow and matures fastest if all other crops leaving the space for other crops.  Final crop should matures at maximum height. Actually-It is fruit that grows for long time. This need to be grown at certain spaces and should be less in number.

Management Practices  There should be made proper provision of staking for climbing crops.  The leafy crops growing on surface should be harvested in regular manner.  There should be provision for insect traps within the structure.  This type of cropping cannot be done in open places. So, we should create a shading structure with bamboo and wild grass.  Training of different crops can be done to make good space under the structure.
  • 18.  Weak seedlings should be removed and trellis should be made for climbers.  Too much irrigation can be harmful. So, proper irrigation should be done to preserves the moisture.
  • 19. Example/Model Of Multilayer Cropping  Here, we are going to make multilayer cropping of Colocasia , Potato and leafy vegetable like coriander (selected crops have different germinating and maturation time)  Colocasia is long duration crop. It is planted in the month of January. After plantation,Colocasia takes (7-8) months for fully mature enough to harvest.  For (2-3) months i.e during the germination time of colocasia the upper and middle layer of soil remain unused.  So, we sow the colocasia at the deepest layer of (25-30)cm in January. Then, we select Potato.
  • 20.  The Potato is sown at the middle layer of soil at the depth of (10- 15)cm from ground in the same month of January.  Potato matures within (2-3) months And it takes (20-30) days to germinate up to ground.  We select a leafy vegetable which matures within a (20-30)days.  This leafy vegetable is sown at the depth of 5cm from ground. Now, our all 3 layers are occupied with crops that have different germinating and maturing time. This creates multilayer system.
  • 21.  In the month of January, the leafy vegetable is ready to harvest. As soon as we harvest it, the middle layer crop i.e Potato germinates out.  After the harvest of Potato, Colocasia germinates out.  At the month of October-We harvest colocasia. Then land again becomes fallow for next two months until January. This 2 month month can be utilized to grow any other crop according to the season.

Vegetable Cultivation Under 3-tier System in Bihar Under this system three models were introduced in Vaishali and Samastipur districts of Bihar and farmers were able to grow three different vegetables on the same piece of land at a time.   • 30. Conclusion  Multilayer system of cropping is sustainable method of cropping that is cost effective and requires less labour . Therefore, people should be made aware of this type of farming system.  We know that many farmers in different countries are unwillingly killing themselves because they work hard in their land but they don’t get good production.  Farmers who are willing to do work are deprived of different resources like irrigation and good area of agricultural land. In this scenario, they can be motivated to do multi-layer system of cropping which can ultimately solves all these problem.  This system of cropping can helps to uplift the economic condition of farmer. Government should give top priority for this kind of farming system.
