The document discusses the filmmaking technique of mise-en-scène. It defines mise-en-scène as the arrangement of scenery, props, costumes, makeup, actors' positioning and camera angles within a scene. It then lists the key elements of mise-en-scène and provides examples of how color, costumes and lighting are used to convey meaning and set the mood in film scenes. The document also includes guidance on directing actors and choosing props and locations for a romantic first date scene.
2. Mise En Scene
0 The french term “Mise En Scene” is the
arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a
frame.
3. 6 Terms of Mise En Scene
0 Settings & props
0 Hair, makeup & costume
0 Actors and Actresses
0 Frame or the position and angle of the camera.
0 Facial expressions and body language
0 Lighting & colour
4. Colour
• Curella the character is dressed constantly in black, white and red. The
colour black suggest, darkness and death; white fur coat may suggest cruelty
as it is associated with animals and red shows violence and blood. Overall,
the colours all together show that Curella is an awful character.
• Cinderella is full of luck and magic and the colours emphasizes this. The
colour silver is respectful and can shows the audience visually what type of
character she is.
• Maleficent has green, black and purple. All of these colours symbolizes
magical, regal and mysterious which is the personality of the character.
5. Costumes
From this image I can
interpret from the clothing
that the people are
unfortunate as they are
wearing clothes that
wouldn’t practically be
fashionable more like
strange. I can also see
that it must be the season
of winter as they are
layered in thick clothes,
hats and scarves.
In this image the two men are seen
to be upper-class people as they
are wearing a fashionable smart
clothes. We can also see from what
they are wearing that the weather
may be considered to be cold, as
they are wearing thick coats and
scarfs.
6. You have to provide props for a romantic meal between
two characters on their first date. Decide what props you
would incorporate and how the actors should be directed
to use them.
0 Cutlery
0 Wine glasses
0 Napkins
0 Wine Bottle
0 Candles
0 Extras in the background
0 Furniture
0 White table cloth
0 Circular table/ booth
0 Formal Clothing
0 Shirt
0 Dress/Skirt
0 Accessories
0 Food
7. How would actors be directed
to use them
0 The actors would sip the wine using the wine glasses.
0 The extras would be eating in the background to give a
realistic restaurant atmosphere.
0 They would place the napkin on their lap and wipe their
mouth.
0 They may play with their accessories for example the
girl be my fiddle with her necklace and bracelets.
8. Location
0 Any restaurant would make the scene as realistic as
possible. Perhaps a restaurant in local Italy with
plants around and candles lit. Italy is known to be
quite a romantic location along with its food and wine.
The scene would have luxurious colours to emphasize
on how fancy the date is.
9. Blocking & Performance
0 Between the actors there shouldn’t be much
movement happening. Perhaps slight touches with
eachother to show flirting to the audience.
0 With the extras you would see people talking and
enjoying their time to give a happy atmosphere.
10. How is lighting being used to create
mood in the following examples?
0 The dark setting implies negativity and a sinister mood to the
audience.
0 The lighting maybe shows a sense of danger – as if it were to
foreshadow something bad happening.
0 It also may show a sense of mystery because the setting and the
lighting is gloomy.
11. How is lighting being used to create
mood in the following examples?
0Because of the lighting– a sense of seriousness is
implied as it falls through blinds giving it that
shade of light which darkens different areas
around the room.
