ucci women. Take a moment to picture them: stepping off a Riva in Portofino, stridin
down the Via Tragara in Capri, reclining aprés-ski in Cortina. Historically, the wom
en drawn to that famous name, as is true today, often had household names of th&
own: Onassis, Radziwill, Bergman, Hepburn, Princess Grace, even Princess Elizabeth
before her coronation. The list is a who’s who of midcentury glamour and aristo
cratic confidence with an Italian accent. And those were the years when the merest
suggestion of wealth, luxury, and ease often came with interlocking G’s. The shoes,
handbags, and scarves were emblematic of Italy in the postwar era, when the country
itself seemed to evoke an ancient beauty, at long last revived.
Now Gucci is translating that Italian glamour into a makeup line. In a single burst,
nearly 200 products (including eight makeup brushes) have appeared. And the famed
double G’s that were once the province of the elite have (continued on 154)

been stamped on compacts “in very
polished, shiny gold...done in real
metal,” says Frida Giannini, Gucci’s
creative director. The gokl insignia set
in unflinching black harks back to the
storied past, “the richness and the lux
uriousness of the brand,” she explains.
Underlining that sense of continuity,
Giannini chose Charlotte Casiraghi,
Princess Grace’s granddaughter and
the daughter of Princess Caroline of
Monaco, for the makeup ads.
Giannini, a platinum blonde in lofty
heels, understands exactly who the
ideal customer is: someone like her.
Gucci is identity, and the makeup it’s
the result of her desires. “I’m a woman
who respects women,” Giannini says. “I
put something of myself in what I do.
I talk about women’s rights, and I talk
about intelligent women, I’m talking
about women who are not interested
only in showing their tits:’
That woman has a burning ambi
tion in her heart and a fiery gloss on
her lips what Giannini calls “the final
touch on a definition of a look:’ In an
effort to convey confidence and pow
er, and those almost mythic qualities
of the Gucci woman, through makeup,
Giannini melded her own taste with
inspiration from the house’s archives
and from some of the great faces ofthe
‘OOs and ‘70s: AnjeIica Huston, Jerry
Hall, Veruschka, Lauren Hutton, Jane
Birkin—their eyes cur
tained by thick false eye
lashes- (The line includes
a mascara wand featuring
small bristles and tiny
paddles that dispense lots
of color and yield a simi
lar effect.)
With inspiration firm
ly in place, Giannini
turned to superstar make
up artist Pat McGrath to
curate the line, “I might have made up
300 or 400 colors;’ McGrath recalls.
“So my main thing was editing the
colors:’ By editing, she means dis
missing or refining certain hues or
ingredients. One lipstick shade under
went 75 different incarnations before
Giannini was satisfied. As McGrath
puts it, “The iconic colors are really
the colors Frida loved:’ And it is the
eyes that rule, Giannini says- In fact,
whenever Gucci stages a fashion show,
she is invariably “very obsessed about
makeup on the eyes, because to me, it’s
the defining look of the woman;’ she
says. Foremost among the colors is a
double G’s.
