Low: Paranormal Activity Vs
High: Avatar Budget Films
Anneka Williamson
Main institutions for both films
 Paranormal Activity (2007)
Blumhouse Productions
 Avatar (2009)
20th Century Fox
Blumhouse
Productions is an
extremely little
known
production
company,
whilst 20th
Century Fox is a
household name
which produces
many of the top
Hollywood films
Budget and Grossing
 Avatar
$237 million budget
$2.7 billion grossing
 Paranormal Activity
$15,000 budget
$108 million grossing
Differences and Similarities of High vs
Low budget film institutions
 Differences
Low budget institutions are not well known and not all cinemas show their films
(especially mainstream cinemas such as ODEON). Whereas high budget
institutions are extremely well known and usually people associate the
production companies names with any film. Additionally, mainstream cinemas
pay money to high budget institutions to preview their films on their screens.
 Similarities
both types of films spend almost all of their budget on the making of the film.
Additionally, both low and high budget institutions can make very good and
enjoyable films, no matter how high or low the budget – as proved by Paranormal
Activity and Avatar.
Other films made by 20th Century Fox
 Sound of music
 Assassins Creed
 X-men
 Titanic
 Kung-Fu Panda
20th Century Fox produces films from all genres, perhaps due to its high budget.
These are just a handful of 20th century fox’s films, all of these films have been
extremely successful. It is difficult to find an unsuccessful 20th Century Fox film.
They were successful because they are all likeable, interesting and gripping films.
This could arguably be thanked to the high budget which 20th Century Fox provided
them with.
Other films created by Blumhouse
 Purge, Anarchy
 Sinister
 Insidious
 The Visit
 The Gallows
Blumhouse only produces horror films
This reason may lower its income as it is one specific film genre. All of these
films have been successful, similar to 20th Century Fox’s films. These Blumhouse
films have been successful because they have all been scary, unique horror
movies.
Audiences
 As Blumhouse only makes horror movies, their audience is 15 years or older
and people who are not easily scared and who like a thrill / enjoy horror
films. This is seen through the films which they produce.
 As 20th Century Fox creates films from all different genres, its audience is film
lovers, or anyone who enjoys watching a film, ranging from children (Kung-Fu
Panda), to adults the elderly (Titanic). This is reflected by the films which
they produce
Which is more successful?
 From my research, 20th Century Fox is the more successful company for
different reasons.
They have produced many of the most famous, popular and highest grossing films
out of all films ever produced.
Additionally, their films always have high amounts of advertisements due to the
high budgets. This helps to make the films, and therefore the company, more
successful.
Although Blumhouse has produced some of the most successful horror movies,
20th century fox has created plenty more well known and popular films than
Blumhouse.
