4. Timeline
• 1st month- Create blog and Facebook page, begin raising awareness of blog and its
purpose, begin networking with other groups
• 2nd month- Set up Twitter account and start posting Instructables,
• 3rd month- Begin photography campaign by posting pictures and encouraging
followers to submit photos. Establish Pinterest and Instagram accounts
• 4th month- Create meet-up events to network with local gardeners, environmental
activists and nature enthusiasts, begin creating videos, create SnapChat account
and LinkedIn
• 5th month- Create YouTube account and start posting videos, strengthen
networking by featuring guest bloggers and other organizations, build a coalition
of local environmental groups for stronger advocacy efforts on environmental
policy
Full social media engagement should be implemented within five months. This allows
enough time to fully establish the blog site and build followers. New social media
platforms will be utilized gradually, starting with Facebook and building up from there.
5. Target Audience
While everyone is encouraged to participate and join the Green-
Thumbed Warrior movement, the target audience are individuals
living in the Pacific Northwest, particularly anyone living in the
Seattle/Tacoma and surrounding Puget Sound area. No environmental
experience needed. In fact, the site is aimed at those who have very
little knowledge of environmental issues and little to no experience
with civic engagement as well as those who have had little exposure to
outdoor activities. The purpose of the site is to inspire environmental
activism by introducing folks to gardening, hiking, camping and other
activities that promote an appreciation of nature. Long-time activists
and experienced gardeners and outdoors people are also encouraged to
participate but with the hope that they can help pull in newbies and
inspire more people towards environmental activism.
6. Maintaining Social Media Presence
• Tweet multiple times a day and make sure to respond to other tweets
• Post on Facebook daily and make sure to like and respond to other posts
• Utilize social media sites to promote all social media accounts- for example:
announce creation of Pinterest account on Facebook, post You Tube videos on
FB and Twitter, Instructables on Pinterest, etc
• Continually utilize all social media platforms regularly with lots of engaging
posts, pictures, projects etc.
• Build network and strengthen coalition by reaching out to other environmental
organizations and activists and featuring their sites, artwork, causes, calls to
action and providing links to their sites; nviting activists to be guest bloggers,
promoting events, rallies and protests
• Make sure posts are engaging to the public by encouraging replies, and sharing
of opinions, start caption contests, photography and art competitions. Make sure
to tag individuals in posts and pictures. Engage in others’ posts. Start hashtag
campaigns and hashtag wars, create fun memes and fun Yu Tube videos to hold
audience attention
• Always post picture and videos of events, rallies and calls to action. Promote
social media accounts at events. Promote hashtag campaigns by using hashtags
in rally and protest signs, t-shirts, buttons, etc
7. Examples of Successful Social Media Campaigns
The following environmental groups have successfully launched social
media campaigns to raise awareness and increase activism:
• Wild Olympics Campaign- a site
dedicated to promote legislative
action to preserve the Olympic
Wilderness. Inspires
environmentalism through hiking

Council- promotes civic engagement
by informing the public on local
environmental issues and legislative
action
• Puget Sound Keepers- educates the
public on environmental issues
affecting the Puget Sound, recruits
volunteers for beach clean-ups and
advocacy
• Pierce County Conservation
District- promotes sustainability and
local action, networks with small
farmers, community gardeners, and
activists, increases food accessibility
through food bank gardens and
gleaning, promotes environmental
policies on a local level
• The Plastic Pollution Coalition- a
coalition of environmental groups
joined together to educate public on
plastic pollution and to discourage
use of one-time use plastic products
and reduce plastic consumption
