The Oracle8i Appliance is a dedicated computing platform that offers a
rapid, low cost and simple means to deploy Oracle8i.
Oracle8i Appliance Enables E-Business
In today’s incredibly fast moving economy, companies and organizations face
the problem of meeting ever-increasing customer demand for internet based
products and services in the face of an ever-diminishing pool of skilled labor to
build and support these systems. The complexity of traditional computer
systems coupled with the lack of skilled labor result in a longer time to market,
higher costs and lower customer satisfaction. The Oracle8i Appliance resolves
this dilemma and introduces a new way of deploying internet applications more
quickly, simply and at a lower cost than has ever been available.
Rapid Deployment
The Oracle8i Appliance is so simple that it can be utilized very quickly and
intuitively. The Oracle8i Appliance is a pre-installed, pre-configured database
server with an integrated operating system kernel built upon Intel based servers.
Because it is ready-to-work out of the box with all its hardware and software
already optimized for the Oracle Internet Platform, the Oracle8i Appliance
requires no local IT installation support. In fact, it is typical to have a fully
functional database server up and running in less than one hour. Additionally,
with WebDB, an option that comes pre-installed and pre-configured on the
Appliance, organizations can quickly deploy web-based applications directly on
the Oracle8i Appliance.
Low Total Cost of Ownership
The cost of implementing and supporting server platforms is a key factor when
making any technology buying decision. The Oracle8i Appliance provides
considerable cost savings, both at acquisition and in its on-going operation and
administration.
The integrated operating system kernel, included with the Oracle8i Appliance,
saves on the up-front costs of licensing a general-purpose operating system.
Since the Appliance is designed for dedicated functionality, extraneous
hardware and software components that introduce complexity and can introduce
system incompatibilities are eliminated, immediately reducing the costs of
system downtime and technical support.

Simple Administration
An integral part of the Oracle8i Appliance is the Oracle Enterprise Manager
(EM) software with the Appliance Management Pack. The Appliance
Management Pack extends EM’s capability to manage not only the database, but
also the entire software environment and various hardware components on the
Oracle8i Appliance.
The EM Appliance Management Pack also eliminates the need for local IT
administration. Throughout the operation of the Oracle8i Appliance, the system
and database software automatically recognize and reconfigure themselves for
hardware upgrades such as adding CPU, memory and disk. All on-going error
notification, routine back-ups, fix-it events and other various administration
tasks are fully automated. Software patches and updates can also be remotely
applied from the centralized EM console. Finally, with a web-based interface,
authorized administrators can manage the Oracle8i Appliance via EM from any
browser over the Internet.
