2. Employment
April 2003- Santia Consulting Ltd, Santia House, Parc Nantgarw,
Present Cardiff, CF15 7QX
Since the birth of my children 6 years ago I have been undertaking the full remit of
an Occupational Health Advisor and prior to this I was working as a manager, for 5
years. Both of these were within Santia Consulting Ltd.
My current role involves both remote case management (working from home) and
also peripatetic work. It includes the full remit of an Occupational Health advisor
which includes case management/ sickness absence consultations, Health
Surveillance and also health promotion.
I have worked within Occupational Health for the past eighteen years, gaining both
hands on and management experience in various areas, i.e. manufacturing,
automotive assembly, mobile phone networks, pharmaceutical, water industry, local
government, construction, and food manufacturing as well as local authorities. This
involved promoting sickness absence management, remote sickness absence
management and consultations, health surveillance, health promotion and health
screening; I have also mentored staff into the OHA role and have delivered short
training courses for staff and managers on various topics, in house, e.g. DSE and
stress management, I have also spent a short period of time as the ‘start up
coordinator’ responsible for all new contracts nationwide.
I have developed sound research based knowledge and skills in relation to
occupational health and I believe I have excellent leadership and negotiation skills.
My communication, both verbal and written is of a very high standard and I am able
to motivate a team and have the ability to work on own initiative being very flexible
and responsive towards work and travel requirements.
Dec 1999- Industrial and Organisational Health, The Tower, Elsdon,
April 2003 Newcastle upon Tyne.
Occupational Health Nursing Officer
My primary objective was to develop new or existing Occupational Health facilities
at companies within the North- East of England.
In addition to undertaking general Occupational Health duties, I was also responsible
for the development and implementation of health related policies and procedures,
therefore it was necessary for me to understand and apply legislative issues to my
work practice at all times.
May 1999- United Utilities, Lingley Mere, Warrington.
Dec 1999 Occupational Health Nurse
This post involved travelling throughout the North of England to conduct Health
Screening and voluntary Health Assessments. The role predominately concentrated
on health promotion and I believe gaining the teaching and counselling qualifications
benefited me greatly, it allowed me to develop excellent communication and
presentation skills.
Due to personal reasons I needed to return to the North East of England and
subsequently applied for the position of Occupational Health Nursing Officer at IOH.
1996- Industrial and Organisational Health, The Tower, Elsdon,
May 1999 Newcastle upon Tyne.
Occupational Health Nursing Officer (Based at Nissan Motor Manufacturing
UK Ltd).
3. This was my first occupational health role. I was responsible for the day-to-day
activities within the treatment room and general Occupational Health duties.
I was one of a team at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd. who were successful in
gaining the Health and Safety at Work award at level 3 in 1997 and 1998. This is a
national award and we were the first manufacturing industry to achieve it.
I wanted to gain further insight into other Occupational Health organisations, to
broaden my knowledge base and subsequently applied for the position with United
Utilities.
1994- Earls House Hospital, Durham.
1996 Bank Nurse
I chose to work in an adult learning disability unit during the period of my nurse
training as I felt that the experience would be of benefit to me both professionally
and personally. I enjoyed the work and as anticipated gained much from it.
1995- Medical Unit, Dryburn Hospital, Durham.
1996 Staff Nurse
This was my first position following qualification. I was appointed as a staff nurse on
a general medical ward; it was at this time that I consolidated the knowledge and
skills learned as a student. Although the work was rewarding and I gained valuable
experience I felt I was more attracted to the proactive type of nursing such as
Occupational Health. I researched and investigated opportunities to develop my
career in that type of nursing and subsequently applied for the position of
Occupational Health Nursing Officer at NMUK.
1992- University of Teesside.
1995 Student Nurse
I was a participant in the project 2000 nursing scheme. I enjoyed my training but
always wanted to experience nursing as a qualified practitioner.
1990- AC Training, Durham.
1992 Auxiliary Nurse
One of my ambitions was to study for a diploma in nursing and so I enrolled on a
Youth Training Scheme as an auxiliary nurse. I felt this would be a worthwhile
experience for me and that I would gain experience on a client, nurse level.
