with measurements in reverberation chamber, providing insight to possible effective EMI
solutions.
 Address EMC problems on high-end switch line cards with near-field scan measurement
and radiation measurement in an anechoic chamber.
 Investigate absorbing material properties and their application on high-end switch cards.
 Perform measurements of optical cages, gaskets, heatsinks with absorbing material,
backplanes, vent hole, and honeycomb in reverberation chamber to evaluate shielding
effectiveness of different designs, and correlate with simulation results.
 Perform shielding effectiveness measurements on chassis with comb generator in an
anechoic chamber.

 Calculate the radiation from basic structures (straight wires, bent wires, and curved wires)
analytically with a first principles formulation to understand radiation physics.
 Analyze the radiation with different current distributions via MOM.
 Identify the contribution from discontinuities analytically.
 Quantify the radiation from antenna currents and transmission line currents above 10GHz.

 Generate a pre-computed EMI reduction database with 3D full wave simulation tool CST
Microwave Studio for dispersive absorbing material coating on cables.
 Develop a two dimensional finite element method for azimuthally symmetric structure to
calculate power reduction, electrical field, S parameters, especially for absorbing material
on cable applications.
 Analyze radiation from USB cables and Ethernet cables and EMI mitigation with

SIGNIFICANT OTHER PROJECTS SKILL SET EMC- tools: CST Microwave, HFSS, EMC Studio, ADS, Hyperlynx High-speed Instruments: VNA, TDR, Spectrum Analyzer, Micro-probing stations, Oscilloscopes Languages: Matlab HONORS & ACTIVITIES  Design of E field probes (Graduate Course Project)  Application of spark gaps on audio jack  Microprobe measurement on IC  Mentoring junior students (HF impedance measurement of an O-clip connector & channel analysis)  Built a spectrum analyzer using different functional blocks built with different RF components  Build up model of optical cage connector in full wave simulation, and correlate mixed- mode S parameters and total radiated power with measurement results up to 30GHz.  Analyze radiation mechanism of optical cage connector (broad-side coupled connector) up to 30GHz.  Develop a systematic simulation and measurement methodology for up-front EMI design.  Investigate methods in full wave simulation to reduce simulation time.  Identify/quantify EMI source of active components inside optical module with near-field scanning and dipole moment method.  Plan and write the statement of work for the first year of a multi-year project with Cisco. Best paper award at DesignCon 2013 for “Validating EMC Simulation by Measurement in Reverberation Chamber”. Nominated for the best student paper award at IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility 2014 for “Radiation physics and EMI coupling path determination for optical links”.
