5. OUZO Distilleries
• Nowadays bottled Ouzo is made all over Greece. It is a PGI
product of Greece and Cyprus. But the Ouzos of Lesvos are
the champions in quantity, quality and fame. The island
boasts 17 distilleries producing first class Ouzo covering 50%
of the Greek production and exports. The labels Mytilene and
Plomari are also PGI.
6. Soap
Initially the soap production took place in a special department
of the olive press factories. When the demand for soap
increased soap factories were developed.
There were 22 factories and more than
4,000 tons of soap per year used to be
exported to many
countries before the
wars.
Nowadays the
production of soap is
much smaller.
7. Ladotyri Cheese
• The flora of the region as well as the traditional sheep and
goat races make this cheese unique in scent and taste. It is
produced since Homeric times and has a protected name of
origin.
8. Salt
This precious ingredient has been produced in the gulf of Kalloni,
Lesvos for centuries as it was the means to preserve the olives
and fish. Nowadays the average production is 50,000 tons of salt.
The main feature of the salt pits is the important natural habitat
that has been created where many species of birds such as
flamingos, wild ducks meet.
9. Salted Sardines
The Greek “sushi” are the Kalloni gulf salted
sardines. Taste them with Ouzo, Ladotyri cheese,
olives and Greek salad with lots of olive oil from
Lesvos!
10. Ceramics
The archaeological digs have revealed that pottery in Lesvos has
a history of 5,000 years. Nowadays there are about 20
workshops producing kitchen utensils but also modern art
ceramics.
