3. OUR MISSION
We are an intercultural centre and a creative research institute based in the Upper
Amazon of Peru. Our mission is to offer transformative learning experiences to
visitors from all over the world, providing opportunities for creative collaboration
with local and indigenous communities that leave lasting value to all involved.
Who are we?

4. We believe that the planet is our teacher and that
the rain forest offers a precious resource for both
healing and education. Conservation of the rain
forest and local communities and their traditions for
future generations is one of our core missions.
We facilitate volunteerism by visiting students and
help local communities on a wide range of social
and cultural projects. Through participating in local
projects in the region, students gain rich and
memorable experiences and leave lasting value to
the communities they visit.
We support local and indigenous artists and
organizations, providing unique opportunities for
international knowledge exchange and collaboration
with creative researchers and producers from all
over the world.
We invite creative researchers of all disciplinary
backgrounds who wish to expand the parameters of
their fields. Arkana Peru focuses on the
development of creative thinking and cultural
innovation, which can be applied across all
disciplines.
At Arkana, students test the limits of creative
expression to discover their authentic mission in
their work. Our teaching methodology involves a
deep investigation into new methodologies
and process oriented modes of inquiry inspired by
indigenous knowledges.

Arkana Arts (Artes Arkana) is our NGO with its own whose mission is to support the local and
indigenous arts and culture in Pucallpa and the surrounding region and facilitate important
opportunities for intercultural participation between the indigenous, local, and international
creative community. Central to the planning involves the organization of annual arts and culture
festival in Pucallpa and the administration of scholarships and international educational
exchanges for local and indigenous artists.

12. The Ucayali river region is one of the most ecologically and culturally diverse regions of
the world with over five distinct indigenous communities including the Shipibo Conibo
and the Ashanika, famed for their rich artistic traditions and deep knowledge of medicinal
plants.

Arkalab visionary laboratory! Through

Amazon rainforest.

17. In the Amazon, the shamanic apprentice
withdraws into the jungle to be tested and
receive the knowledge of nature and the
spiritual realms. The week is a time
for deep focus, for incubating your most
important ideas and attuning to the
intelligence of the rainforest.
Modern science has proven that
immersion in nature dramatically affects
how we think and feel including both our
creativity and problem solving abilities.
After a short time, we feel more connected
to our subtler senses and experience
more profound awarenesses as well as a
greater sense of well being.

18. The fourth module brings you back to Pucallpa and the Ucayali river where you can
connect with your chosen mentor for a week experiencing life in their organizations
and participating on local community projects. Here you can gather feedback and
research for your project as well as make new friends and great connections for the
future.

20. DOCUMEN
TATION
The fifth module is dedicated to developing
your project into coherent proposition. Whether
you write, draw, design, or create music, this is
the week to bring form to your ideas.
WEEK FIVE
Emerging into Form

21. The Documentation Week is a time to shape your insights and inspiration of the past couple of
weeks into a creative proposition in your chosen media. The aim of documentation is not to
complete a finished product but a coherent assemblage or "life map" of your most important
ideas and themes that you will apply in your future projects and career.

22. The final module and week is dedicated to presenting your project to the
world. After a rigorous self evaluation process with mentors, you
complete your six week summer institute with a multi-media presentation to
your collaborators and community. This time is also valuable for discussing
your career goals and the next steps forward in your creative future!

projects in the Upper Amazon with local and visiting mentors and
collaborating with organizations on initiatives that have a lasting impact to the
