Archie Roach Stolen Generations Resources is a Stolen Generations unit produced through ABC Education based on
‘Took The Children Away’ by Archie Roach. Took The Children Away is a song based on his experiences and the
collective trauma of being forcibly removed and the Stolen Generations. It is an emotionally evoking memoir of the
impact of the Australian government historically taking Aboriginal children away from their families, culture, and
community. The song has now been turned into a book and illustrated by Archie Roach's wife Ruby Hunter.
A unique feature that ABC Education has provided is a recommendation on how to adjust the lessons for younger
audiences and early-stage education. This allows the themes and history of the Stolen Generations accessible at an
earlier age in education.
The unit was created based on the song Took The Children Away and its connection to the Stolen Generations and
offers many cultural competency and safety resources for educators to use in conjunction with the lessons, including
'how to conduct a yarning circle' and 'how to avoid cultural appropriation'.
