The Design Cycle!
1. There are many types of design cycles:
a. IB Design Cycle
b. FCCLA Plan, Do, Act
By Angela DeHart, 2017
c. Scientific Design Cycle
d. Engineering Design Cycle
By Angela DeHart, 2017
2. We are going to focus on the IB Design Cycle because we are an IB school!
a. Please look at the video I created on YouTube (https://youtu.be/fF0qru00JOM) . I know
it is a bit long but it is meant to take you through the cycle and allow you to move
forward on your project with independence. If you have ANY questions after you watch
the video (feel free to take notes/create a mindmap) then please ask! 
i. Also use the other design cycles and see how their steps are defined – maybe
you can use the way they describe their cycle step to help you understand the IB
design cycle!
3. The last step of this process is to create your own design cycle example so that I know that you
understand the process – so.....
a. List a problem that you want to solve (keep it simple! The objective is to show your
understanding not solve the world’s problems in this activity! )
b. Tell me what other people/companies have done to solve the problem
c. Create your own solution to the problem
d. List what tools and materials you will need to bring your solution to life
i. Tell at least 1 other student about your design.
1. Would they buy it?
2. Do they have suggestions for making it better?
a. Record their suggestions
e. Reflect on your solution.
i. How can you make it better?
ii. What did you learn by going through this thought process?
4. Congratulations!
a. You have finished your design cycle formative!
b. Turn in your design cycle for grading
c. What’s next? You summative design cycle project!
