In September 2020, COVID-19 had affected almost 6.94 million people in United States
with a close of 2000 deaths. Over 31 million people globally had been affected with the virus
making it one of the worse pandemic in the history of human beings. During outbreak, it is a
common phenomenon for people to seek the origin and assign blames on a particular people or
nation in regarding outbreak the virus. Mostly media reports have alerted the Asian Communities
in the United States concerning the rise of the Anti-Asians hate crimes since the outbreak of the
virus. The federal Bureau of Investigation in late march 2020 warned of the community surge
and hate crimes during the pandemic and alerted the police and judicial systems to pay close
attentions to bias-motivated crimes on the Asian community in regard to the COVID-19. This
essay aims at exploring media reports on COVID-19 in Asian Community.
Asians community residing in US are vulnerable to racist attacks following the outbreak
of the virus. The attack involve being ordered out of the restaurants, attacks in media outlets like
Facebook, twitter, limiting interactions with Asians, or intentionally isolating oneself from
Asian communities in public places (Fox News 1). Most of the e racism and attacks are related to

the outbreak of the virus as most Asians are blamed for the outbreak of the deadly virus.
According to Fox News, A California district attorney announced that the laws enforcement
should respond to the attacks against Asians specifically elderly Asians. There is a pattern of
abuse related to blame placed on the Asians community for the outbreak of the pandemic. The
district attorney also reported that there is a rapid series of criminal attacks targeted against
Asians communities particularly the Chinese (Wallace 1). According to the Fox News, some of
the notable areas with increased attacks and blames on the Asian community are the Chinatown.
New York, San Francisco Alameda County. Slogans such “Chinese virus” have fueled the hate
and aggression which have resulted to crimes. Former United States president formally referred
to the virus as Chinese Virus, referring to Wuhan where the virus was first reported. This
inflammatory statement by the former president has placed the Asians community at risk during
the pandemic. The analysis of the report by the Fox News majorly focuses on the hate against the
Asians Americans. This is biased report because the major focused of the report has been pegged
on hate and crimes against Asians while other significant aspect like vaccination and social
distancing are left out. Their report has a potential of tagging Asians Americans with the advent
of the virus which only fuels the prejudice.
CNN report have also reported hostility that Asian American communities have faced in
the last years following the outbreak of the virus. According to CNN news, animosity towards
the Asians community has grown in the wake of the COVID-19 showing clearly that this hatred
is directed towards Asian community. Following the presidential sentiments of the pandemic as a
“Chinese virus”, subsequently many Asians were blamed for bringing the virus to the United
States. This resulted in the second financial hit particularly to the Asians Americans communities
who had already faced hardship following the outbreak of the virus. According to CNN, close to

3795 complains of racism and discrimination toward the Asians American’s were reported as of
March 19, 2020 through the Coalition Stop AAPI Hate (Zdanowicz 1). CNN reports that of the
total report of hate against Asians, two of them were Asians women who were killed in Atlanta
Shooting. Despite the increased hate and blame against the Asians communality regarding the
outbreak of the virus, CNN report that the rise in blame against Asians community has also
inspired them to share their stories. According to the information gathered by the CNN, the
media house received more than 300 responses. CNN used the first name to conceal the identity
of the Asians community to prevent them from retribution in their communities. The report by
the CNN seems to be unbiased because in addition to reporting hate against Asians Americans, it
also reports solutions and tracks the feedback of the Asians Americans concerning their
inflammatory hate against them.
BBC News reports that an elderly Thai immigrants died after be pushed to the ground, a
Chinese woman slapped and then set on fire and a Filipino Americans slashed in the face
because they are blamed for the outbreak of the virus. According to BBC, the hate against Asians
community range from spat to verbal attacks and even to incident of physical attacks. Advocate
for the crimes often associated the Asians to the rhetoric that Asians community are responsible
for the spread of the pandemic in the world (BBC News 2). According to the BBC News, of the
six millions Asians Community who reside in California’s there are over 80000 Covid-19 related
hate as from March to May 2020 in 34 counties reported. According to the Center for the Study
of Hate and Extremist, in Orange counties, the numbers of hate crime have intensified by 1200%.
Advocate relate the incident of the rising anti-Asians sentiment in United States. Most have
blamed the former president for the rise of the hate and blames against the Asians. This report is
biased because it uses headlines that informs not only of the prejudice but also fuels it.

Hate and discrimination incident among the Asian Communities continues to be reported
similarly to the above media outlets. Just like the above reports, ABC news has been biased as it
reports only incidence of hate against Asians while avoiding other crucial information which
could change the narrative such vaccination. According to the ABC News, the incident of hate
have skyrocket during the COVID-19 pandemic. ABC News reports that Stop AAPI Hate’s
reports shows that 6603 incidents of hate against Asians were reported. Of the report, 12.6%
were related to the physical assault, verbal harassment were 64.2%, 7. 3% involved online
harassment and of the whole report, women reported 64.8% (Hutchinson 1).
Most media outlets report similar incidents of situation of COVID-19 among Asians
Americans. In most media, hate, racism and discrimination ranging from physical assault, verbal
attacks and online attacks dominated their headlines. Tracking the discussed media outlets,
shows that Asians communities have reported racial slurs, physical violence, and termination of
job, being spat on and intended isolation. however, except for the CNN that reported that Asians
community are taking the prejudice as step further to share and campaign against racism, most
Media outlets have increasingly been biased because their reports have touched particularly on
“hate against Asians” while avoiding some crucial information regarding vaccinations. Their
reports have led to stigmatization of the Asians community concerning the outbreak of the
COVID-19 because most of the reports are lenient towards “hate crimes against Asians
Americans”. The rampant use of the term “Chinas virus”, “hate against Asians Americans” by
the media outlets has profound impact on how United States Citizens see Asians Americans.
Racially charged headlines not only shows bias against Asians Americans but it leads to
increased subconscious belief that Asians Americans are the perpetual foreigners who brought
the virus.

In conclusion, the United States mainstream media seems to be colluding with the
conservative’s intellectuals in their endeavor to divide and knock Asians community particularly
Chinas for the spread of the COVID-19. The above media outlets except for the CNN have
played a significant role in spreading the hate against the Asians community. The media have
consistently hold these topic of hate against Asians in their news coverage particularly during
Trumps Administrations. This is shown by their clear inclination towards US conservatives in
their rhetorical blaming, naming, and shaming in their coverage of news concerning the Asians
Americans.
