“My Last Duchess” is historically related to the events of Duke of Ferrara. The painting
of the former Duchess star the conservation of unfaithfulness, stubbiness, frivolity and therefore,
the poem illustrate that the Duke prefers the painting rather the living women. The poem,
reveals the duke’s perception that women are object that should be possessed and discarded.
Therefore, it reflect Victorian social norms that denied women opportunity to have rights and be
independent. Hence the poem seek to critique such view point and present objectification and
sexism as dehumanizing that robes women of their full humanity. The way the Duke treat the
painting reflects his treatment of women as objects to be possessed.
The lines “that’s my last Duchess painting on the wall, looking as if she was alive”
“depth and passion of its earnest glance, but to myself they turned” presents a fascinating
experiences in the mind rather than simply creating a colorful character and putting the Duke in a
historical scene. The poem manages to engage the reader on the psychological level because of
the Dukes Mussing’. The author attempts to engage the reader in the poem by forcing the reader
to question the painting and the method of its portrayal. As one reads, the reader is left at the

dilemma of question the horrific fate of duchess or the beauty of language used. Thus, it is
interesting to note that the use of language and art has made it possible for Browning to explore
issues of sex, violence and aesthetic.
The language of the poem point to the Victorian era. Such include “famous Fra Pandolf,
and Neptune. Robert Browning depiction of the Dukes reflect the Victorian social perception of
how women were handled in the society. The author also uses the dramatic monologue which is
a magnum opus of the genres set during the Victorian era.
