This presentation highlights the background, the efforts and the results-to-date, as well as the on-ward plan in the development of high strength nickel lateritic steel, courtesy of Research Center for Metallurgy and Materials (RCMM) - Indonesian Institute of Sciences. The development of this nickel lateritic steel is aimed to give added values for the abundant left-behind limonitic minerals (low nickel content), by processing them into steel commodity having high strength, good corrosion resistance, and good weld-ability. The preliminary study shows that the strength and the ductility of such nickel lateritic steels exceed those of commercially available soft steels. For those knowledge, experience, and achievement, on December 15, 2015 RCMM - LIPI was inaugurated by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education - the Republic of Indonesia to be the Center of Excellence in Science and Technology for Lateritic Steel. A good opportunity is widely open for collaborations with those interested in scaling-up/trial-production/full-production of this lateritic steel from upstream to downstream aspects.
