2. EARTHERN ARCHITECTURE
INTRODUCTION-
• Earthen architecture has been an important part of
• the sustainable architecture and has been there of
ages.
• The use of rammed earth techniques, adobe walls,
mud burnt bricks, wattle and daub construction and
many more are still being practiced.
• It has been helpful in the harsh climates, be it hot and
dry and cold and dry climate as it interlocks and
controls the temperature inside.
• The readily available material that needs no finesse is
eco-friendly.
The Three Area Of Interest That Is Yet To Be Explored-
• Study of earthen architecture in various parts of Himachal Pradesh.
• Identify techniques for achieving water resistance in earthen structures.
• Modern advancement in earthen architecture.
3. Study Of Earthen Architecture In Various Parts Of Himachal Pradesh.
• The nature of research work is basic. This himachal is rich with diversity and different
architecture at every corner of the world. The type of construction varies from lower to upper
himachal. The topic will focus on the nature of construction and the factors that affects the change
in techniques. For example the vernacular settlements in dharamshala is of rammed earth mixed
with cow dung whereas in spiti valley the rammed earth is mixed with stones. Around chamba and
barot the use of wattle and daub structure is seen. This research will open up the dimensions of
different construction techniques of same material with comparison for better understanding.
Identify Techniques For Achieving Water Resistance In Earthen Structures
• The nature of research work is applied. As per the above topic this will be an extension to finding
ways to water resistant techniques that can be readily used in places with heavy rainfall like
himachal. This research can add up to the workability of material without compromising its
authenticity.
TOPIC SIGNIFICANCE
4. Modern advancement in earthen architecture.
• The Nature of the research work is basic. Through this topic we can explore the new horizons of a
sustainable architecture practiced with modern technology. The pure use of any one way is not
justified as time has changed and environment is also moved. This research work will give future
generation a vision to use these techniques more efficiently with proper justification.
TOPIC SIGNIFICANCE
5. Study Of Earthen Architecture In Various Parts Of Himachal Pradesh.
• NATURE- The nature of the topic is based on the investigation of vernacular architecture of
various climatic zones in Himachal Pradesh.
• PURPOSE- The topic will focus on the nature of construction and the factors that affects the
change in techniques.
• SCOPE- It will open up the dimensions of different construction techniques of same material with
comparison for better understanding.
Identify Techniques For Achieving Water Resistance In Earthen Structures
• NATURE- The nature of research is experimental and is to come up with different techniques to
prevent dampness.
• PURPOSE- The water resistant techniques can be readily used in places with heavy rainfall like
Himachal.
• SCOPE- It can add up to the workability of material without compromising its authenticity.
