In the iconic scene from The Shining where Jack Nicholson says "Here's Johnny!", the costumes, lighting, sound, cinematography, and editing are used to convey danger and increase tension. Jack's dark costume indicates his impurity and threat to Wendy and Danny, dressed in lighter colors. As Jack chops down the bathroom door, the lighting gets darker and the soundtrack increases in volume to reflect the characters' growing panic. A long shot of Danny escaping out the window separates him from his helpless mother. The agonizingly long shot of Wendy trapped behind the door builds tension over whether she will escape Jack's terror.
2. TheShining
ď For my micro-analysis I have picked a critically-acclaimed film
called âThe Shiningâ, which was directed by Stanley Kubrick. I
have primarily chosen the most iconic scene of the movie in which
the main character, played by Jack Nicholson, says the famous line
âHereâs Johnny!â
3. Costume
ď The costume that Jack was wearing is a dark burgundy colour. This
indicates the impurity of his character and shows the darkness
within Jack. The mother is wearing a blue colour, which indicates
the purity of the character and is the one that Jack is hunting
down. Danny is also dressed in a dark burgundy colour. It
emphasises the impurity of the child and how he repeatedly says
âRedrumâ. âRedrumâ backwards is Murder, this indicates that
there is something lurking within Danny also.
4. Lighting
ď Lighting in the scene gets progressively darker. The first room is
well lit and is bright making sure that Jack is shown. Danny and
Wendy are escaping outside of the hotel. Outside however is very
dark which shows how desperate the pair are.The fact that they
are willing to escape to a more darker area shows how dangerous
Jack is and how threatening he is to the child and mother.
5. Sound
ď Sound plays a very interesting role in the shining, particularly in this
scene. The soundtrack, also known as the non-Diegetic sound, starts
off very loud at the realisation of Danger. Then Jack begins to chop
the door down with this axe. Suddenly everything becomes extremely
quiet and as Jack forces his way through, the soundtrack starts to
increase it's volume once again. This adds onto the panic Wendy and
Danny must be feeling at this point. the fact that the volume increases
when they are panicking adds extra emphasis on the degree of danger
that they are facing. In terms of Diegetic sound, it also plays as much
of a role as the non-diegetic.The constant banging on the door further
reinstates the danger that the mother is in with her crazed
husband. The constant knocking just makes the situation worse for
wendy, since she has the feeling that Death is about to take over, a
common theme in horror movies.
6. Cinematography
ď Cinematography is shown to imbedd the unforgiving behaviour of
JackTorrance into the audiences minds. The shot ofWendy being
absolutely terrified of Jack bashing down the door is a perfect
example of danger. The axe coming down on the door is
positioned as closest to the camera.Wendy is then screaming
behind this dangerous weapon. The positioning of this mid-shot
clearly wants to make sure that the axe is in focus and that it's
further implicating that death is soon to arrive.Wendy is
positioned in the back, helpless and inferior to this weapon that it
tearing down her protection. The fact that the audience see's her
protection being demolished at the front, just shows how helpless
she really is.Also a wide shot is used when Danny flees outside of
the window. As her mother attempts to climb out, the wide shot is
used in a symbolic way to show the separation from a mother and
her child. The relationship between a mother and a child is a
strong one and the fact that the boy has had to be separated from
her mother shows how desperate Jack's terror is making them.
7. Editing
ď The shot ofWendy screaming at Jack, begging him to stop while
she is trapped in the bathroom, lasts an agonising 23 seconds. For
the shot to be so long, it really brings forward the torment that
Wendy is going through and further implicates the idea of mental
torture. The slow editing dramatically adds tension to the scene.
This slow build up to Jack finally gaining entry to the bathroom to
kill his wife makes the audience wonder if Jack will make it
through the door or if Wendy will escape and this scene keeps that
thought in the audience's head for quite a long time, almost
taunting them.
