Solving Housing
Problems
Filipino families are generally
resourceful which enables them to
solve their housing problems. These
problems are mostly the result of
overcrowding, lack of space, lack of
privacy, lack of health facilities, and
above all, poverty.
Zoning – is designating the
development of certain areas for
specific purposes. This is
enforced by the government
and home developers to
minimize housing problems.
Every city should designate
then a residential,
commercial, and industrial
zone.
Residential Zone
A residential area is a land use in which housing
predominates, as opposed to industrial and commercial areas.
Housing may vary significantly between, and through,
residential areas. These include single-family housing, multi-
family residential, or mobile homes.
Commercial Zone - Commercial areas in a city can take up
about 5% of a city’s land. It is used for commercial activities.
These activities include the buying and selling of goods and
services in retail businesses, wholesale buying and selling,
financial establishments, and wide variety of services that are
broadly classified as "business". Even though these
commercial activities use only a small amount of land, they
are extremely important to a community’s economy.
Industrial Zone
Areas allocated for industry within a town-planning scheme
or environmental plan. The range of industries accommodated in a
plan may include: light industry, service industry, general industry,
hazardous, noxious or offensive industry, waterfront industry,
extractive industry. Standards are usually defined for industrial areas
relating to access and roads, drainage, car parking, aesthetics,
landscaping, buffer zones, noise levels, and air and water pollution.
If zoning is strictly complied
with, your house will be situated
in a peaceful neighborhood since
only residential houses will
surround you.
Every family has its own way of solving the
space problem if the house is small. They
use the available human and material
resources they have to provide for adequate
housing. Built-in and hanging cabinets,
multi-purpose and folding furniture
rectangular or square boxes that serve as
seats are used to maximize space. Dividers,
curtains, and blinds are used to provide
privacy in crowded homes.
Ways of Solving Space
Problems
1. A bedroom can look bigger with the use of folding bed
that is kept in the closet when it is not in use.
2. Carefully selected furnishings are proportional to the
size of the house.
3. Bulky and heavy furniture should be avoided.
4. Use tabletops made of glass and seats without arms
and back rest.
5. Things that are not frequently used should be stored or
kept.
6. Use space-saving gadgets, like multiple hangers, shoe
bags, and clothes bags.
Here are some tips on how to
maximize all spaces in a small house:
“ Beauty is in the eyes
of the beholder.”
-anonymous
Principle of Design in the
Choice of Home Furnishings
How do you find the
pictures? Do they really
set an epitome of the
word BEAUTY?
The beauty of the house lies not in its
size nor expensive fixtures, but rather, in the
way the furnishings have been put together
to create harmony in the living space. The
design of the house should give the family
members an atmosphere of peace and
relaxation as well as free and easy
movement.
Design is defined as any arrangement of
lines, forms, colors, and textures. Thus,
anybody can create a design. A creative
person can create beautiful designs, through a
combination or through an orderly
arrangements of objects or materials. When a
person creates a design, he/she should be
guided by these five basic principles.
Harmony
Is the agreement among different parts. It produces an
impression of unity through the selection and
arrangement of objects and ideas.
Proportion
Is the relationship of one part to another, or to the whole. When
proportion is applied to furniture and furnishings, we should remember
these examples:
Windows that are too short may have long, narrow draperies and no
balance;
the chair that is too low may have a vertically striped cover.
Balance
Refers to the regular or irregular relationship between two forces. It
gives a feeling of stability and steadiness in a room. This may either be
formal or informal.
Formal or Symmetrical Balance
This is the kind of balance where one side is exactly the same as the
other. It is the mirror image of the other.
Informal or Asymmetrical Balance
This an arrangement where e side is differently
arranged from the other side. Like in see-saw, the
heavier object or item is placed near the center and
the lighter one far from the center.
Emphasis
Refers to the center of interest or focus in the room. It is carried when
the eye is carried first to the most important thing in any arrangement.
Rhythm
It refers to the consistency of presentation and the repetition of line,
color, shape, and texture. In any arrangement, the objective is a feeling
of unity.

MAINTAING CLEANLINESS AND
ORDERLINESS AT HOME
Prepared by: JOHN REY P. RODRIGUEZ
Do you clean your own
room?
People would often say that the
bedroom speaks of the personality
of the person occupying it. Do you
agree?
A clean and neat house is attractive. A
clean house with simple and inexpensive
furnishings is more pleasant to look at than
one which is dirty even though it is
furnished expensively.
Household members should devote
time and effort to the task of keeping
the house clean and in order. A clean
and orderly house provides a safe,
pleasant, and healthy environment for
family member.
Cooperation adds to the enjoyment in
doing household tasks. The worked can be
group according to the tasks.

1. Baking bread, cake, or cookies can be done while waiting
for the meal to be cooked.
2. Ironing or mending clothes can be done while waiting for
the meal to be cooked.
3. Dishwashing can be combined with taking care of the
children.
4. Cooking rice and cleaning the house can be done at the
same time.
5. Scrubbing and sweeping the floor can be done at the
same time.
6. Dusting, cooking, and defrosting the refrigerator can also
be done simultaneously.
7. If you have a washing machine, washing dishes, cooking,
and cleaning can be done at the same time.
Housekeeping chores can be hectic. By using
the principles of Work Simplification, you will
be able to finish the tasks with the least
amount of energy and time expanded.
PRINCIPLE OF WORK SIMPLIFICATION
1. Don’t do any task that you don’t have
to do.
2. Try to do one task as you do another.
3. Keep everything within easy reach.
4. Use the best tool. For example, use a
tray or wheeled table for carrying
dishes, food, or sewing supplies.
5. Make both hands work.
6. Assume the best posture.

Home is the best place we associate with the
environmental pollution. Even though we
spend over half of our time there, we stock a
wide range of environmentally harmful
chemicals.
All household pollutants eventually make
their way into the water, soil,, and
atmosphere. Make a point of knowing what
chemicals are present in your home – it could
be a matter of life and death.
DOWN-TO-EARTH HOME HINTS
1. Make or buy nontoxic cleaners.
2. Avoid the use of pesticides in the home.
3. Read labels carefully.
4. Use all cleaners moderately.
5. Keep your toiletries simple.
6. Avoid over-packaged cosmetics and cleaners.
7. Learn which additives are harmful and avoid
them.
8. Choose biodegradable products.
9. Avoid aerosol cleaners.
