1. Words: Native and Borrowed
This reflection will explain about the text “Words: Native and Borrowed “and how is
related to a specific objective of the course lexical analysis. It will show how the English
language has changed with the past of the time since Old English. The text covers much of
what we have been talking about in class and reveals the importance for us as future
teachers to know about the ancients origins.
Firstly, the text provides relevant information about the process of borrowing words and the
origin of thousands of words. It tell us that English language is product of other languages
influences derived from the Indo- European branch, this is why it has similarities with
another languages. Going through the text I noticed that all languages have two kinds of
words, one of them are natives and the other one are borrowed by other languages, this is
the fact of why borrowing of the words is consider as the most important contribution to
English language. Moreover, it explains us how important was the development of the
cities and their dialect, in the case of London their development contributed to what we
know today as English language.
Finally, the text “Words : Native and Borrowed” is extremely related to lexical analysis
course because of the fact that it is a good complement of what we have read before, it
shows us a specific list of cognates and their phonetic changes through time. This text helps
us to be more familiarise with what we are learning and what we are going to teach in the
future
In my opinion, knowing about English language and their process of borrowing and native
words is a good way to understand what English is today that it is. Furthermore, I think that
it is a very useful text that help us as English students as foreign language to comprehend
one of the most important languages in the world.
