  1. 1. A Reflection ByShirley D. Guillermo 1
  2. 2. A Word About language Language is around us everywhere. Without it, life inmodern society would be impossible. Business executivesuse words in planning production and in promoting theirproducts. Politicians use language in discussing the issues, drawing up laws explaining their stand to the voters.Newspapers keep us informed through words. Teachers, lawyers ministers-none could do their work withoutlanguage. The study of English helps people use language easilyand well. It helps people to speak and write effectively, tounderstand the workings of language and to listen and readwith profit and pleasure.
  3. 3. In Order To Speak and write, Develop a Lifelong Interest in Words Success in English requires a knowledge of words.Anyone must learn to study words- to pay attention tonew words, to look them up in a dictionary, to watchfor them in future listening, reading or writing. Words are interesting in themselves. They are basicbuilding blocks in speech and writing because no onecan communicate without words that convey exactmeaning. Both in school and in every day life, peoplewho went to do well must be articulate. They must beable to use words easily and well.
  4. 4. The Role of an English Language Teacher A key factor in developing the language skillsof the students is a teacher who serves as theirrole model. The effects of teachers’ influence andknowledge on the language can be seen in thespeaking, writing and reading ability of theirstudents who will come out to be good in usingthe English language and reflective of the kind ofeducation they have acquired from a teacher. As such, the role of an English languageteacher plays an active part to prepare thestudents to face the challenges of the world asthey grow older to be able to interact with othersusing the language.
  5. 5. The Importance of Knowing the English Grammar Thank you for the helpful explanation on the EnglishGrammar. Having a good knowledge and understanding ofit is very important for me as a language teacher. I know that MED 104 (Grammatical Structure ofEnglish) will be of great interest to me and my classmates, because we are looking ways on how to improve ourteaching skills using the English language. Excellent! I really appreciate it very much.I definitely took away good ideas from the information. Now I know why I always insist my students to be carefulwith their grammar especially in their compositions ‘coz Iwas a product of prescriptive grammar.
