An informative presentation that breaks down the way Hawai’i consumes and produces food and provides reasoned explanations as to why they should change. This presentation targets not only how horrible it is for the environment but also to our health.
2. What Is Food
Sustainability
— There is no legal definition to sustainable food but it
does contribute to the following:
— To thriving local economies and sustainable
livelihoods
— To protect the diversity of both plants and animals
to avoid damaging natural resources and
contributing to climate change
— Provide social benefits, such as good quality food,
safe and healthy products and educational
opportunities.
3. How Our Food Is
Produced
— In most supermarkets today you can find around
47,000 products to choose from
— Most of the food in the U.S. is controlled by a
handful of corporations that only care about
producing the most efficient food for profit
regardless of how dangerous it is to our health
— Many of these foods contain highly processed foods
with no nutrition and toxic chemicals/additives
4. How We Get Our Food
— Hawaii today is very dependent on food sources from
other places around the world
— We use ships and airplanes to carry food, these vehicles
have their own engines to power the extra cooling needs
— However this consumes large amount of oil which is
very expensive and creates large amounts of CO2
pollution damaging the earth creating global warming
— Global warming is an event responsible for weather
change, melting of polar ice caps, negatively effecting the
ocean, etc.
5. The Impacts Of The Food
We Produce And Buy
— Greenhouse gas emissions are created during the production
and distribution of food
— Soils, water, natural resources and energy are used to produce,
harvest, transport, process, package, distribute and market all
our food products
— We can reduce the environmental impact by changing our
actions towards food production and food waste
— Farmers use untraditional, and sometimes dangerous
methods/chemicals to mass produce food
6. How Our Food Should Be
Produced
— Food should be produced how local farmers
produce it
— Not using a lot of chemicals
— Not putting too much stress on the animals
— Not genetically engineering crops
7. Where Our Food Should
Come From
— Food should be coming from sustainable farmers
— Local Farmers
— Helps increase the demand for local produce
— Helps the local economy
— Grow your own
— Simple vegetables and garnishes
— Start a small garden
— Only use the resources you need
8. The Impacts of More
Sustainable Food Choices
— “We are what we eat”
— Less pollution = better and more resilient
environment
— More opportunities for your local community
— Happier tummies and healthier bodies
9. Suggestions On How To Be
A ‘Sustainable Foodie’
— Go organic or at least fresh (less packaged) : It is better
for you and it is better for the environment
— Support local: Have your family go to the farmers
market instead of the grocery store
— Self-sustainable: Have fun and grow your own garden
— Eat less meat: Try new recipes that do not require meat
— Communicate with your family, friends, and community
to share your knowledge and create change.
