Metal cutting involves removing excess material from a workpiece using various tools to create a finished part that meets specifications. There are manual metal cutting methods like saws, chisels, and shears as well as machine methods like turning, milling, drilling, and grinding. When manual cutting is impractical, machine cutting tools like lathes and bar cutting machines are used. Lathes remove metal from a workpiece to shape it according to the operation being performed, while bar cutting machines can cut multiple rods simultaneously using hydraulics.
1. Metal cutting is a collection of processes where in material is brought to a specified
geometry by removing excess material using various kinds of tooling to leave a finished
part that meets specifications.
There are many technologies available to cut
metal, including:
•Manual technologies: saw, chisel, shear or snips
•Machine
technologies: turning, milling, drilling, grinding,
sawing
•Thermal/burning cutting technologies: burning
by laser, oxy-fuel burning, and plasma
•Erosion technologies: by water jet, electric
discharge, or abrasive flow machining.
2. The most basic means of cutting metal are based upon manual tools, which is to
say smaller cutting devices which can be operated by hand.
•SAW The most basic of these is probably a hacksaw, constructed of steel which is
strong enough for its’ sharpened teeth to work through metal.
•Chisels can also be used to take off unwanted bits of metal, either cold chisels or those,
such as a ‘hardy chisel’ on an anvil, which are forced through metal when it has been
heated and softened.
•Shears are scissor-like devices with blades made from carbon steel.

3. For jobs which are too large or deal with materials which are too robust to
make manual metal cutting a practical proposition, machine cutting has to be
applied, and this comes in various different forms.
•BAR CUTTING / SHEARING MACHINES:- Highly sophisticated bar cutting
machines work with hydraulics, which makes them very accurate in their cutting.
Strong and sharp blades used in these machines are highly durable too as they have
got multi cutting edges. With fast and efficient bar cutting machines are capable of
cutting multiple rods at the same time.
