4. Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 2012 Blue Jean Ball!
The last few years have been pivotal here at the Maryland Food Bank.
With the release of Feeding America’s “Map the Meal Gap” report, we
learned that 460,000 Marylanders are food insecure, uncertain of where
their next meal is coming from. Nearly half live above the federal poverty
line, ineligible for any government assistance. Collectively, food insecure
Marylanders miss nearly 79 million meals each year.
As the need has grown, so has our staff, resulting in the renovated offices
that you passed on your way in. Food distribution has more than doubled
over the past four years, reaching an all-time high of 23.1 million pounds
in Fiscal Year 2011. Programs like Pantry on the Go, SNAP Outreach and
the School Pantry Program are serving more families, seniors and children
than ever before. And yet, more is needed. Investments like office space
and our recently launched Western Branch in Washington County will
provide capacity to find and distribute more food, launch new outreach
programs and engage more volunteers and supporters, like you.
The Maryland Food Band doesn’t succeed, however, without our
dedicated staff; our visionary board, our diligent partner network; our
steadfast donors and volunteers and the creative thought leaders in our
state who continue to see the food bank as the asset it is. Without these
partnerships, we would be unable to continue providing the unique
service we render.
As you enjoy your time here at the Maryland Food Bank – transformed
for one night only into the swingin’ Copa Room at the Sands Hotel – I
hope you remember why we are here. The Blue Jean Ball is our greatest
opportunity to raise funds to feed more people, while putting the issue of
hunger front and center where it belongs.
Thank you to our co-chairs, Philip and Denise Andrews, and to all of our
sponsors, especially Lead Sponsor, CSX. Together we can – and will – end
hunger in Maryland.
There is only one Maryland Food Bank, and you make it possible.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Deborah

Hunger in Maryland
Yes,hungerexistsinMaryland. Andallofusinthisroomtonight
can do our part to help eliminate the problem. It’s around
us – and it affects the poor, seniors, children and families. As
indicated with the data to the left, we currently have a gap
or need of over 79 million meals in our service area alone
(all of Maryland except Prince George’s and Montgomery
counties). This is over and above everything we and other
anti-hunger organizations are currently doing to end hunger in
Maryland. To put this in perspective, it equates to 103 million
pounds of needed food. The Maryland Food Bank currently
distributes over 23 million pounds annually – so the need
is great. This is why your support of this event is so critical.
All of the proceeds from tonight will be used to underwrite
our work. The warehouse where we are holding the Blue Jean
Ball is one of three locations across the state that receives
and stores millions of pounds of food. This food is then made
available for distribution to soup kitchens, pantries, shelters
and other feeding programs statewide. It feeds the hungry,
which increasingly includes middle-class families who are
struggling to meet their financial obligations in the midst
of sustained economic challenges. Many of these families
have been forced to make difficult choices between buying
medicine, keeping their home, or feeding their children.
Proceeds from tonight will provide food assistance to
the community and ensure that fewer fellow Marylanders
are forced to make these impossible decisions.
Together we can – and will – end hunger in Maryland.

calving and zebra foaling season. February is the ideal time to
visit Tanzania, when immense migratory herds of wildebeest and
zebra congregate on the Serengeti’s short-grass plains. The sight
of this phase of the migration with young animals everywhere is
unforgettable. In addition to Serengeti National Park, during this
12-day safari, you will explore the diverse landscapes of Tarangire
National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and AWF’s Manyara Ranch.
You will see some of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife, including
lions, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, and more while
visiting flagship AWF conservation projects and a local women’s
cooperative. Whether you are spotting a leopard, learning
about local culture, or sharing conservation stories around a
campfire, Tanzania is quite simply, the ultimate safari destination.
Accompanied by an AWF Safari Leader and local naturalist
guides, this is an extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime trip.
