Our Mission
The Granite State Ambassadors program is dedicated to
meeting and exceeding the informational needs of guests and
residents of the State of New Hampshire through in-depth
training and active participation of our certified Ambassadors.
Our Core Values
• We believe in volunteerism, participation, and cooperation.
• We believe in training and demonstrating the essence of
New Hampshire hospitality.
• We believe that citizen responsibility and living landscape are
the themes that define this essence.
Citizen Responsibility
A belief that individual citizens can and will take responsibility
for our future.
Living Landscape
A strong attachment to the condition of the state,
including both its natural resources and its built environments.
In short, we believe that New Hampshire will only be a good place
to visit if it continues to be a good place to live. Visitors will come
only if we work proactively to retain our scenic open spaces, rich
historic and cultural attractions, livable communities, as well as the
social structure that values the individuals and permits them regular
opportunities to pitch in and make a difference.
A Message from Our Executive Director
Kelly Bryer, Executive Director
Museum of NH History Class of 2003
Despite the challenges COVID-19 put in our path this year, we came out on top, thanks to
our passionate volunteers and dedicated staff and board. Everyone came together to do their
part to completely flip our model to fit our new virtual world. And while we couldn’t assist
our guests directly, we re-focused our energies to supporting our tourism industry partners
and developing an impressive amount of information resources to share.
Emily and I wish we could summon the words to express the amount of admiration and
gratitude we have for you. You’ve been steadfast by our sides to boost us up, think through our harebrained ideas,
keep us on track, and lend a shoulder to cry on. We don’t know where this organization would be without all of you!

In Memory of Those Who Passed Away This Past Year:
A Message from Our Chair
Gretchen Ziegler, Chair of the Board of Directors
Stonewall Farm Class of 2004
What a year it has been!! And nothing like what we expected!! Top kudos to Kelly and
Emily for steering us through constantly changing constraints and Michelle for making
sure we took advantage of the opportunities to make up for our lost revenue from the
many cancelled events. The coronavirus forced us to hold our spring training via Zoom,
and we got to video all of our training, which we had been planning to do. Now, any GSA
can tap into the program to refresh their knowledge of the different sections of training.
And we can offer the same opportunity for any member of the tourism community who
would like to learn more at any time of the year. Without the Big E this year, September feels very different, but it
allows us to be outside here at the Cathedral of the Pines in its most beautiful time of year. We are all missing the
Big E, but hopefully it will be back next year.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Moe Demers for his service on the Board. He has been a
strong voice for the GSAs, but also has brought a great deal of experience that has proven very valuable during his
service. Thanks, Moe, for all you have done for the organization, and I know will continue to do as you continue your
service as a GSA of the Year. We welcome to the Board of Directors Ashlee Rowley from the Lake Sunapee Chamber
of Commerce. And we welcome back to the Board Jim Narkiewicz. Jim was the GSA of the Year in 2006 and
previously served on the Board. Now that he is retired, he has the time to come back on the Board as a community
member.
As we look forward to the last quarter of 2020 and 2021 with still many unknowns, we know that we have a solid
organization that can handle anything that comes up, because we have done so these past six months We look forward
to the future with confidence, and wonder, “What will this year bring??”
Message from Our Chief Financial Officer
Michelle Demirjian, Innovision Realty Group
MtSunapeeLodging.com Class of 2011
Covid-19, pandemic, pivot, PPP, flattening the curve, masks…did you ever think that these
would be the words and phrases we speak most often in 2020? It’s been a challenging and
unique time for all of us as we have adjusted to a new normal, learned how to navigate the
news of this outbreak on a daily basis while taking care of our own health and the health of
those around us. I don’t know a group of individuals who were more prepared or capable of
accepting and rising to the challenges 2020 has presented than Granite State Ambassadors.
Kelly and Emily kept us going in an ever-changing environment, the Board provided
guidance along the way, our Partners and Member Centers supported each other, but most
important, our Granite State Ambassadors embraced the changes we had to make, were ready to go when things
opened back up, and are with us celebrating our organization and individual accomplishments despite the year we
have had.
Financially, our organization took a hit as revenue-generating events were cancelled and the travel and tourism
industry nearly came to a halt. We were able to take advantage of Non-Profit Emergency Relief Funds and PPP
money but most impressive is the amount of support from so many of our Granite State Ambassadors, Board of
Directors, and Industry Friends during this pandemic—especially during NH Gives. We have received over $20,000
in general donations. Through your donations, we have been able to keep our staff fully employed which was most
important as they have kept us fully engaged with our GSAs and partners, allowed us to continue our GSA trainings,
and remain at the ready for when our volunteer services were needed. Thank you to all of you for being such a bright
light in 2020.

The Granite State Ambassadors’ “Achievement Awards” were
established in 1999 to honor 20 GSAs who had achieved 100-500
hours of volunteer service. After growing to honor hundreds of GSAs
for thousands of hours of service, the event was renamed the
“AMBIE” Awards (like the Emmy Awards, but for Ambassadors).
Throughout the year, fellow Granite State Ambassadors, Center
Managers, tourism and state officials, and the traveling public, take
time to give recognition to our Granite State Ambassadors. From
these submissions, our Nominating Committee, comprised of former
GSAs of the Year, and Board and Staff members, meets to discuss the suggestions. This team develops a
recommended slate of award recipients for approval by the NHGSA Board of Directors.
Congratulations to our Annual, our Hours, our Kudos and all our Award recipients, and to all our wonderful
Granite State Ambassadors for your dedication and service to New Hampshire.

Granite State Ambassador of the Year -
Patty Mason
Concentra Urgent Care Class of 2009
Hospitality from the Heart Award - Connie Loken
Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Class of 2015
Patty was part of the Concentra Urgent Care Class of 2009, and pretty quickly
became a very familiar face at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. She
is a dedicated volunteer who doesn’t hesitate to assist wherever and whenever
needed. She is courteous, supportive and knowledgeable, but is also quick to
seek out up-to-date information, as needed.
Patty is a great listener who consistently asks pertinent questions to determine
what a visitor wants or how she can best help them. She has been extremely
supportive to new airport volunteers in her role as a mentor. She approaches
every situation with a clear head and a friendly, calm demeanor whether at the
airport or volunteering at special events.
Patty has over 2,000 GSA volunteer hours, was awarded the Hospitality from the Heart award in 2016, has taken
advantage of touring opportunities, and along the way earned her AMC Certification as well as her White Mountain
National Forest Certification. Her passion for the state of New Hampshire and her outstanding service make her a
true GSA through and through, and more than worthy to receive the Ambassador of the Year award.
Connie was a member of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Class of 2015, and
now volunteers at that very airport and at special events. She has earned over 700 hours
thus far, and has also participated in many learning opportunities and tours. When
volunteering with Connie, anyone is assured of spending time with someone who will
listen well, learn a lot about you and probably follow-up with you the next time she sees
you. She makes friends easily because she is so generous with her time. Those altruistic
qualities also extend to her volunteering where she will always listen well so that she can
help any visitor to the best of her ability.
Customer service is Connie’s middle name, and she excels at empathizing with the
person in front of her and solving any problem handed her. Her smile and friendly
manner are contagious, and always make visitors and GSAs comfortable whenever she’s
around. Connie previously received a 500 hours award, the 2016 Rookie of the Year
Award, an AMC Certification and a White Mountain National Forest Certification. For always giving from her
heart, Connie has been awarded the Hospitality from the Heart Award.

Karen is frequently described as a dependable and dedicated Granite State
Ambassador, and with good reason. She was a member of the NH Historical Society /
Centennial Hotel Class of 2016 and has already earned nearly 1,500 hours. She
volunteers at the Manchester Airport, the NH State House Visitor Center and many
special events where she loves helping people, doing it with a smile and lots of
knowledge to share. On any of her volunteer shifts, Karen is willing to help both as
part of her shift and beyond and participates in many of our learning opportunities.
She has recently become part of the GSA Think Tank to share ideas and expertise to
make sure the Granite State Ambassadors organization continues in its success. Karen
has previously received the Top Annual Hours Award, and the 1,000 Hours Award. For her on-going and consistent
dedication to the Granite State Ambassadors organization and other GSAs, Karen has been awarded this year’s
Service Award.
Martha’s sunny smile leaves such a wonderful impression on those who meet her,
whether GSAs or visitors to the NH State House where she volunteers. She was
a member of the Comfort Inn Concord Class of 2011. Although she has to travel
halfway across the state for GSA related commitments, Martha shows up regularly
for her volunteer shifts, and also attends some learning opportunities and special
events. She’s always enthusiastic about learning new things, and her love of learning
is contagious to those around her. Her center manager also knows that Martha is able
to handle the center on her own, no matter what issue may arise. Martha previously
received the 250 hours award and also a Kudos award. With her very sunny
personality and dedication to Granite State Ambassadors, it is very appropriate that
Martha has been awarded the Judi Window ‘It’s Always Sunny in NH’ award.

Granite State Ambassadors Yearbook 2020

  • 1. New Hampshire Granite State Ambassadors 2019-2020 Commemorative Yearbook Welcoming the World to New Hampshire since 1996
  • 2. Board of Directors 2019-2020 Officers: Gretchen Ziegler, Chair Bill Petersen, Vice-Chair / NHGSA Founder Sue Geyer, Treasurer Joseph Walker, Secretary Directors: Marty Wagner, 2019 GSA of the Year Kathryn Segreti, 2018 GSA of the Year Maurice Demers, 2017 GSA of the Year Peter Morgan, NHGSA Founder James Narkiewicz, Retired Hotelier Mark Okrant, NH Author, The Laker Ashlee Rowley, Lake Sunapee Region Chamber Judi Window, Morgan Franklin Fellowship - NHGSA Founder Staff (part-time) & Contractors Kelly Bryer, Executive Director Michelle Demirjian, Chief Financial Officer Emily Goulet, Volunteer & Events Manager Matt Lavoie, MHT Brochure Coordinator Krissy Mehegan, Intern Our Mission The Granite State Ambassadors program is dedicated to meeting and exceeding the informational needs of guests and residents of the State of New Hampshire through in-depth training and active participation of our certified Ambassadors. Our Core Values • We believe in volunteerism, participation, and cooperation. • We believe in training and demonstrating the essence of New Hampshire hospitality. • We believe that citizen responsibility and living landscape are the themes that define this essence. Citizen Responsibility A belief that individual citizens can and will take responsibility for our future. Living Landscape A strong attachment to the condition of the state, including both its natural resources and its built environments. In short, we believe that New Hampshire will only be a good place to visit if it continues to be a good place to live. Visitors will come only if we work proactively to retain our scenic open spaces, rich historic and cultural attractions, livable communities, as well as the social structure that values the individuals and permits them regular opportunities to pitch in and make a difference. A Message from Our Executive Director Kelly Bryer, Executive Director Museum of NH History Class of 2003 Despite the challenges COVID-19 put in our path this year, we came out on top, thanks to our passionate volunteers and dedicated staff and board. Everyone came together to do their part to completely flip our model to fit our new virtual world. And while we couldn’t assist our guests directly, we re-focused our energies to supporting our tourism industry partners and developing an impressive amount of information resources to share. Emily and I wish we could summon the words to express the amount of admiration and gratitude we have for you. You’ve been steadfast by our sides to boost us up, think through our harebrained ideas, keep us on track, and lend a shoulder to cry on. We don’t know where this organization would be without all of you! • 3. A Message from Our Chair Gretchen Ziegler, Chair of the Board of Directors Stonewall Farm Class of 2004 What a year it has been!! And nothing like what we expected!! Top kudos to Kelly and Emily for steering us through constantly changing constraints and Michelle for making sure we took advantage of the opportunities to make up for our lost revenue from the many cancelled events. The coronavirus forced us to hold our spring training via Zoom, and we got to video all of our training, which we had been planning to do. Now, any GSA can tap into the program to refresh their knowledge of the different sections of training. And we can offer the same opportunity for any member of the tourism community who would like to learn more at any time of the year. Without the Big E this year, September feels very different, but it allows us to be outside here at the Cathedral of the Pines in its most beautiful time of year. We are all missing the Big E, but hopefully it will be back next year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Moe Demers for his service on the Board. He has been a strong voice for the GSAs, but also has brought a great deal of experience that has proven very valuable during his service. Thanks, Moe, for all you have done for the organization, and I know will continue to do as you continue your service as a GSA of the Year. We welcome to the Board of Directors Ashlee Rowley from the Lake Sunapee Chamber of Commerce. And we welcome back to the Board Jim Narkiewicz. Jim was the GSA of the Year in 2006 and previously served on the Board. Now that he is retired, he has the time to come back on the Board as a community member. As we look forward to the last quarter of 2020 and 2021 with still many unknowns, we know that we have a solid organization that can handle anything that comes up, because we have done so these past six months We look forward to the future with confidence, and wonder, “What will this year bring??” Message from Our Chief Financial Officer Michelle Demirjian, Innovision Realty Group MtSunapeeLodging.com Class of 2011 Covid-19, pandemic, pivot, PPP, flattening the curve, masks…did you ever think that these would be the words and phrases we speak most often in 2020? It’s been a challenging and unique time for all of us as we have adjusted to a new normal, learned how to navigate the news of this outbreak on a daily basis while taking care of our own health and the health of those around us. I don’t know a group of individuals who were more prepared or capable of accepting and rising to the challenges 2020 has presented than Granite State Ambassadors. Kelly and Emily kept us going in an ever-changing environment, the Board provided guidance along the way, our Partners and Member Centers supported each other, but most important, our Granite State Ambassadors embraced the changes we had to make, were ready to go when things opened back up, and are with us celebrating our organization and individual accomplishments despite the year we have had. Financially, our organization took a hit as revenue-generating events were cancelled and the travel and tourism industry nearly came to a halt. We were able to take advantage of Non-Profit Emergency Relief Funds and PPP money but most impressive is the amount of support from so many of our Granite State Ambassadors, Board of Directors, and Industry Friends during this pandemic—especially during NH Gives. We have received over $20,000 in general donations. Through your donations, we have been able to keep our staff fully employed which was most important as they have kept us fully engaged with our GSAs and partners, allowed us to continue our GSA trainings, and remain at the ready for when our volunteer services were needed. Thank you to all of you for being such a bright light in 2020.

  • 10. The Granite State Ambassadors’ “Achievement Awards” were established in 1999 to honor 20 GSAs who had achieved 100-500 hours of volunteer service. After growing to honor hundreds of GSAs for thousands of hours of service, the event was renamed the “AMBIE” Awards (like the Emmy Awards, but for Ambassadors). Throughout the year, fellow Granite State Ambassadors, Center Managers, tourism and state officials, and the traveling public, take time to give recognition to our Granite State Ambassadors. From these submissions, our Nominating Committee, comprised of former GSAs of the Year, and Board and Staff members, meets to discuss the suggestions. This team develops a recommended slate of award recipients for approval by the NHGSA Board of Directors. Congratulations to our Annual, our Hours, our Kudos and all our Award recipients, and to all our wonderful Granite State Ambassadors for your dedication and service to New Hampshire. • 12. Granite State Ambassador of the Year - Patty Mason Concentra Urgent Care Class of 2009 Hospitality from the Heart Award - Connie Loken Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Class of 2015 Patty was part of the Concentra Urgent Care Class of 2009, and pretty quickly became a very familiar face at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. She is a dedicated volunteer who doesn’t hesitate to assist wherever and whenever needed. She is courteous, supportive and knowledgeable, but is also quick to seek out up-to-date information, as needed. Patty is a great listener who consistently asks pertinent questions to determine what a visitor wants or how she can best help them. She has been extremely supportive to new airport volunteers in her role as a mentor. She approaches every situation with a clear head and a friendly, calm demeanor whether at the airport or volunteering at special events. Patty has over 2,000 GSA volunteer hours, was awarded the Hospitality from the Heart award in 2016, has taken advantage of touring opportunities, and along the way earned her AMC Certification as well as her White Mountain National Forest Certification. Her passion for the state of New Hampshire and her outstanding service make her a true GSA through and through, and more than worthy to receive the Ambassador of the Year award. Connie was a member of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Class of 2015, and now volunteers at that very airport and at special events. She has earned over 700 hours thus far, and has also participated in many learning opportunities and tours. When volunteering with Connie, anyone is assured of spending time with someone who will listen well, learn a lot about you and probably follow-up with you the next time she sees you. She makes friends easily because she is so generous with her time. Those altruistic qualities also extend to her volunteering where she will always listen well so that she can help any visitor to the best of her ability. Customer service is Connie’s middle name, and she excels at empathizing with the person in front of her and solving any problem handed her. Her smile and friendly manner are contagious, and always make visitors and GSAs comfortable whenever she’s around. Connie previously received a 500 hours award, the 2016 Rookie of the Year Award, an AMC Certification and a White Mountain National Forest Certification. For always giving from her heart, Connie has been awarded the Hospitality from the Heart Award.

She was a member of the NH Historical Society / Centennial Hotel Class of 2016 and has already earned nearly 1,500 hours. She volunteers at the Manchester Airport, the NH State House Visitor Center and many special events where she loves helping people, doing it with a smile and lots of knowledge to share. On any of her volunteer shifts, Karen is willing to help both as part of her shift and beyond and participates in many of our learning opportunities. She has recently become part of the GSA Think Tank to share ideas and expertise to make sure the Granite State Ambassadors organization continues in its success. Karen has previously received the Top Annual Hours Award, and the 1,000 Hours Award. For her on-going and consistent dedication to the Granite State Ambassadors organization and other GSAs, Karen has been awarded this year’s Service Award. Martha’s sunny smile leaves such a wonderful impression on those who meet her, whether GSAs or visitors to the NH State House where she volunteers. She was a member of the Comfort Inn Concord Class of 2011. Although she has to travel halfway across the state for GSA related commitments, Martha shows up regularly for her volunteer shifts, and also attends some learning opportunities and special events. She’s always enthusiastic about learning new things, and her love of learning is contagious to those around her. Her center manager also knows that Martha is able to handle the center on her own, no matter what issue may arise. Martha previously received the 250 hours award and also a Kudos award. With her very sunny personality and dedication to Granite State Ambassadors, it is very appropriate that Martha has been awarded the Judi Window ‘It’s Always Sunny in NH’ award.
