earthquake on 12 May 2008, not a single one of them collapsed and many lives were saved.

Before the earthquake, BEICHUAN HOTEL was an 8 storey building. The
first 2 floors were built with bricks and concrete while Xinghe’s wall
boards were used to complete the upper floors. During the earthquake
almost all the buildings in Beichuan county collapsed. The first two floors
of the hotel also crumbled causing the upper floors to drop. The upper
floors are still there today for anyone to see.

17. Wenchuan county was the closest to the earthquake epicenter and many buildings
were severely damaged there. But the Mang Qianghong Hotpot Restaurant
(originally called Liu Yishou Hotpot) which was built with Zhouxinghe’s
materials ， remained intact and all the 58 people inside survived unhurt.

The National Fireproof Quality Supervision Inspection Center for Construction Materials reported that
after placing the hollow plant fiber board in a 1430°C furnace for 188 minutes, it was stil intact

32 and 38 °C. (the testing day had a normal temperature)

absorbtion, cracking, wrapping, deformation and aging
that is associated with magnesite products
NATIONAL
PUZZLE
Till date, China has still not found a solution to the problems of moisture absorbtion and
wrapping of magnesite products. Sometimes there is no choice but to use magnesium
sulfide as substitute for magnesium chloride. However hydration occurs on calcium oxide
which results from the combination of sulphur products with magnesium products, and
the gypsum generated can expand 3-4 times its volume resulting in deformation and
damage. For this reason, most companies can only produce common wall materials. They
can not produce heavy load bearing materials for buildings or bridges
GLOBAL PUZZLE
The extensive use of magnesium based cement made from the
mixture of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride (also known as
magnesite materials) began around the second world war for
military projects such as airports, fortifications, trenches etc.
However several years of absorbing water, frost, developing cracks
and wraps have led to the gradual breakdown. Scientists around the
world invested lots of money to and time to find the cause and find
solutions. They managed to find the cause but not the solution to the
problem.
