Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All matter has properties of mass and volume that can be measured in kilograms and liters. Density describes the relationship between a substance's mass and volume. Energy transforms and moves matter, and different forms of energy include light, heat, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and nuclear energy. Heat is a type of energy transferred between objects of different temperatures, which can be measured using a thermometer. Light is also a form of energy that travels in straight lines and allows us to see objects through our sense of sight.

WHAT IS MATTER?
Everything around us is made of matter.
All matter has two properties we can measure:
• The mass of a substance is the quantity of matter that it is made
of. We measure mass in kilograms.
• The volume of a substance is the quantity of space that it
occupies. We measure volume in litres.
The density of a substance is the relationship between its mass and its
volume.
WHAT IS ENERGY?
Energy transforms matter. It is also needed to perform and do
activities. For example, a plant uses energy from the Sun to make food
and grow.
We obtain energy from different sources:
• Non-renewable energy sources, such as oil, come from the Earth.
Their supply is limited and they cannot be replaced.
• Renewable energy sources, such as the Sun, will never run out.
Types of energy
There are different types of energy:
-Electrical energy
-Thermal energy
-Mechanical energy
-Chemical energy
-Light energy
-Nuclear energy
HEAT AND TEMPERATURE
Heat is a type of energy that is transferred from a hot substance to a
colder one.
We talk about temperature when we measure how hot or cold a body is.
We measure temperature with a device called a thermometer.

2. LIGHT
Light is a type of energy that is emitted by luminous objects and
substances. We use our sense of sight to perceive it. Because of light we
can see the shape, size and colour of things.
Light travels in straight lines from the light source.
