• The Greek revolution of 1821 with the motto
“Freedom or Death” refers to the Greek War of
Independence (1821-1832).The revolution conducted
by Greeks who were under the sovereignty of the
Ottoman Empire for 400 years. This war led to the
recognition of the independence and the
establishment of the Greek state with the Treaty of
May 1832.
• The anniversary celebration of the rise of the March
25th, widely known in modern Greece as the
“Revolution of ‘21”, is official holiday for the Greek
state.
