2. The codes and conventions
• The purpose of an opening sequence is to
establish the mood and visual character of a
film and introduce the viewer to all or some of
these elements:
• Characters
• Locations
• Narrative/Plot
• Themes
• Visual
• Genre
3. Genre
The genre of Juno is a comedy, Romance and
drama. It would appeal to a wide range of
audiences from teenagers to young
adults. The opening does not in my opinion
give you an idea of what the film is going to be
about.
4. Sound
The opening scene is to the song: "All I Want Is
You" by Barry Louis Polisar it is a very joyful
fast pace song and creates a happy
atmosphere which draws you into the film.
5. Characters
Ellen Page was photographed with a high speed camera
from different angels walking on a treadmill and
drinking SunnyD .900 still images of her walking and
drinking were printed out and repeatedly run through
a Xerox machine to degrade their quality until the
pictures appeared hand drawn. The pictures were cut-
out and scanned back onto the computer then
layered onto the background drawn with composting
software to create a stop motion animation sequence
that fits with "All I Want Is You" by Barry Louis
Polisar. This is how Ellen page ‘Juno’ is introduced into
the film.
6. Opening credits
The titlecards were designed to represent each of the
seasons for the film. The credits of the film always
must include: Director, Production company, Name
of the film, Main Cast, distribution company, casting,
costume design, music and songs, co-producers,
music supervisors, film editor, producer, director of
photography, executive producer and writer.
7. Locations
The opening sequence of Juno is filmed of her
walking down a road which is clearly in her
own neighbourhood because she is walking
down the road very comfortably and like she
knows where she is going.
