Thomas Building’s supervisors had extensive experience
when working with Rapley Wilkinson (formerly owned
by Thomas Building Manager Director Alan Thomas) in
Kununurra on 30 houses for the State Government.
The Federal Government provided an incentive for
employment of Aboriginal apprentices.
Kimberley Group Training (KGT) was the sponsored
apprenticeship assistance/liaison agency who managed
the process. KGT chose the candidates it considered
suitable for each position made available by the
subcontractor.
The apprentices could choose any trade - standard or
otherwise. Each week, KGT would liaise on site with
the Aboriginal apprentices and subcontractors, to
ensure that any issues were resolved, confirmed that
they were at work and that they were being paid.
The sub-contractors working on site treated the
Aboriginal apprentices no differently from other
apprentices they had ever worked with. The
sub-contractors placed nine apprentices in vari-
ous trades - concrete, carpentry, roof and wall clad,
Gyprock, painting, and electrical.
At least five of these placements continued past the first
year with the sub-contractor. With nine Aboriginal
apprentices on site, all sub-contractors took it on board
to ensure everyone worked well together.
The Aboriginal groups held different cultural
classes which were offered to all sub-contractors and
supervisors, so that everyone could understand and
respect the cultural differences.
Overall, it was a great success for all involved.
