Given with Hanna at Health Libraries Group Conference 2010. Talked about our participation in a group blog (the) health informaticist (now defunct). Advantages and issues with group blogging
(The) health informaticist: collaborative blogging for health, fun and, erm, profit

โข What our blog is all about
โข The origins of (the) health informaticist
โข The experience of collaborative blogging
โข Top posts
โข Connections to other organisations
โข Plans for the future

6. Who we are
Hanna: Researches clinical guidelines for NICE. Science nut. Involved with
SLA Europe and the LIKE group. Loves a good argument.
Alan F: NHS librarian of longish standing and above average height. A past
Chair of HLG and is on more committees than he cares to own up to. His
enthusiasm for all things info is occasionally scary to other, more slapdash tHI
authors. The only one of us who is a MCLIP
Danielle: Charities, Sharepoint, BMJ, NICE guidelines, question-answering
services, Cochrane, CILIP Gazette. You name it, Dani has done it. Also really
quite tall. Oh, and sheโs Canadian too
Alan L: Lonely information specialist for small EBM company Bazian. As well
as the usual searching stuff also looks after knowledge management, intranet,
webpage etc, and manages a few BMJ journals. Failed academic
13. How it all started
1. To encourage me to become and
remain more aware of current
developments in my field;
2. To act as a notepad or journal of
interesting things I've read or heard
aboutโฆ;
3. To possibly act as a useful current
awareness tool for others in the field
of health informatics.

14. Why switch to group format?
โข Lazy founder-blogger, needed help
โข More frequent posts would attract more
readers. Also surely co-bloggers would
read posts?
โข Group blog would allow differing points of
view on issues
โข Founder-blogger is sole info specialist in
small company - wanted friends
15. Why only four bloggers?
โข Tried to find some others but difficult to
find regular contributors
โข Could still add more but as now a group
blog would be more of a group decision
โข Felt a good range of sectors / views had
been reached

18. Benefits of group blogging
โข Raise profile โ and motivate yourself to
keep up to date as you need something to
write about
โข Profitable โ not monetarily but you get out
what you put in, broaden your horizons,
learn about other aspects of information
management
โข Fun โ meet new people, argue about
issues down the pub
19. And some disadvantagesโฆ
โข Lack of personal brand or consistent voice
โข There is the potential for two posts on
same topic , though this is rare
โข Everyone might decide to post on the
same day, then quiet for a fortnight
โข Design โ we can never agree on what
looks good
โข stats envy: โhow come that post got more
views than mine?โ
20. Connections to other
organisations and outreach
โข Recommended resource for journalists
(Cochrane Library)
โข Listed on Medpedia
โข Cross posting on Twitter / Linkedin- Twitter
a top referrer!
โข Personal connections to professional
groups
โข LIKE group
21. Future plans
โข Market ourselves more
โข Find an interface we can all love
โข Find a few more blog authors โ anyone
interested?
What weโre about
How well have we done to stick to this remit? I admit to ranting on about EBM itself and science and weโve strayed into *politics* shock horror as it affects our work e.g. NHS funding or whether the NHS should pay for homeopathy
Add photos? Or cartoon versions??
AKA what a health informaticist looks like
Talk about debates around professional identity
Library Garden: written by 13 people and cutting across sectors
From: About Libraryย Garden
โLibrary Garden has been conceived as an ongoing conversation among librarians with differing perspectives (public, academic, consortial, state, youth, LIS) but one shared goal: ensuring the health and relevance of libraries.โ
Choice of images?
really shows what a group blog can do with collaborative postsย and interesting variedย view points.ย ย
written by lots of different people, frequently updated and with a good mixture of new developments, product reviews and more in depth debate. Not very health informatics but definitely web 2.0ย
ย highly specialised use of the group blog format.ย Brilliant sharing tool for no cost but a little time.
Why set up thi blog?
- trying wordpress (having used blogger previously)
- No expectation of people reading
- a note pad memo to self affair
ย
Why change to group?
- v lazy
- wanted more readers
- more frequent posts would help attract them
- wanted a wider view point and those engaged in bigger teams / organisations
ย
Why stop at current (fantastic) four?
- Tried a few others but didn't work out
- Could still add more but as now a group blog would be more of a group decision
- felt a good range of sectors / views had been reached
The homepage scored the highest by far at over 3,000 views. Guides on integrated care was the top actual post with over 1,000 views. Syndicated views are often double or triple actual trips to the blog on the first day of the post. Worst posts scored under 100 syndicated/ actual views.
Benefits of blogging becomes "benefits of group blogging"
- Variety of experience
- less time commitment
- social element
- maintains interest of audience through lean spells
- increases engagement
- raises profile (does this still work in group thing?)
ย
Disadvantages
- Lack of personal brand
- awkward url
- potential for two posts on same topic (rare)
- potential for clusters of posts reducing time at top
- picking a template
- no consistent voice
- stats envy (turns out all those present look at the stats and thought it was only them)
