2. Situation
The conflict happened -When a team member gets a promotion and she is not able to handle
her position
In our organization, there are 25 people working in a department out of which 7 members are
working on a java project which was assigned by the manager (Rohit Sharma) of the company by keeping
all the skills and knowledge of a team in a mind. One of the members (Smriti Khanna) is highly skilled and
has all the managerial as well as leadership skills as a result the organization has decided to give her the
promotion from the leader of a team to the Manager. However, some conflicts arise between Smriti and
another team member John as Smriti was not able to take the smallest decisions.
Involvement – Manager (Rohit Sharma), Promoted Team leader (Smriti Khanna) and the team members
working on Java Project.
3. Conversation between the Manager, Team members, and Promoted
team leader and acting Scene or Script.
• Rohit Sharma to Smriti - Hai Smriti. You are doing your job perfectly. So, I am giving you the responsibility of
handling and managing the whole team of the java project
• Smriti - yes sir, I hope I will do my responsibility successfully.(Feeling Motivated)
• John- Hai Smriti, I think you should assign all the tasks to team members as per their strengths.
• Smriti - yes John, you will do the work on DBMS, and the rest of the team will handle the front end.
• John- Sorry, but it’s a request, could you please swap my task with any other team member as I am not that
good with DBMS
• Smriti- I would like to help you, but unfortunately, I cannot as no one else from our team? have the knowledge
of managing and accessing DBMS. (Depressed to have a non-cooperative Team leader)
• John - yeah, I understand but you should figure out some solution
• Smriti- No I will stick to my decision, and I cannot change it (Rude with team member)
• John-okay
On next day
• John to manager- Good afternoon Sir, I am not happy with our Manager (Smriti Khanna) as she is too rude and
not able to understand my problem. Not only that but she could also not even able to find some alternatives to
solve my issue. I don’t want to work under such a manager as she is not cooperative.
• Rohit Sharma to John - don’t worry, I will talk to her and try to figure out some solution to your problem
• John- yeah sure Sir. Thank you!
• Rohit Sharma to Smriti- Hello Smriti. How are you doing?
• Smriti- Doing great Sir.
• Rohit Sharma - I know it is a new experience for you and you will find difficulties but remember I am here
to help you.
• Smriti- Thank you, Sir!
4. • Rohit to Smriti- Actually, I get to know about the john’s problem which he has discussed with you, and I
guess he didn’t you’re your answer great but being a manager of a project, you must handle the situation
politely so that they would like to work with you.
• Smriti- Yes sir I understand. Nut at that time I was a little confused.
• Rohit- it’s okay! Let’s have a meeting for tomorrow with all the team members and understand their
point of view.
Next Day
In Meeting Room (COLLABORATION AND DECISION-MAKING TECHNIQUE)
• Karan (another team member)- Hello sir, I think we should assign a person to John who has a great
knowledge of DBMS so that he or she can train John
• Sakshi Sood- I think we should change John with some other member.
• Rohit- by keeping all the alternatives in my mind, I will prefer to go with the first one which is given by
Karan as this solution not only help John in the project but also will enhance his technical skills. Therefore,
I recommend assigning another member from our department to John. By doing this John will get the help
and be able to do the task assigned to him.
• Rohit – Smriti- What you say Smriti? I want your opinion on this
• Smriti- Yes sir, even I will go with the first solution.
• Rohit- are You Okay with this alternative John?
• John- Yes Sir, this solution will help me in the accomplishment of my task successfully.
• John- Thank you Smriti for giving approval.
• Smriti- Pleasure is mine. Sorry for my wrong behavior.(Feeling Guilty)
• John- It’s Okay!
CONFLICT RESOLVED
•
6. • By getting a promotion smriti feels motivated
and wants to give his hundred percent to the
project. John was confused as he had no
experience working on DBMS. Here Rohit
plays a vital role to get things done between
both smriti and John as he wants peace
between the teams. After getting the help of
an experienced person John feels motivated
toward the duties that were assigned to him.
At last, Smriti felt guilty for the wrong
behavior toward John.

Motivation
& Emotions
7. How was the conflict resolved eventually?
● Offer something - Here Rohit, offer something as a solution to both Smriti and John and he took the initiative of
the solve the conflict between both John and smriti.
● Make time - By organizing a meeting by Rohit, everyone can give their perspective towards this conflict.
● Focus on the issue - By addressing the conflict in a meeting everyone can focus on a specific conflict, it will rise
to number of solutions for the conflict between John and Smriti.
● Listen - Here in the meeting, everyone listened to the John and smriti. so that conflict can be resolved.
● Solution - Karan who is the group member of another team craft a solution that they should assign an individual
for couple of weeks, who has a great knowledge of DBMS to train the john in the specific area
● Let it go - Here john changes his perspective after the assigning an experienced person on him to teach him
DBMS.
8. The resolving technique we
used to tackle this conflict:
• We used the decision-making as well as collaboration
technique to resolve our conflict which means we include the third
person that is the Manager of a department and took his advice on
our disagreement. After hearing the solution of Rohit Sharma
(Manager), we (Smriti and John) both understand his point of view,
that rather than spoiling the relationship and wasting precious time
we should figure out the problem as well solution.
• Eventually, Rohit decided to conduct a meeting and one of the
team members gave the suggestion of adding a new member who
has a great knowledge of DBMS so that he can give the training to
John about the important concepts which he is going to use in the
project that is Hospital Management System. By taking his advice
we resolved the problems as well as the conflict which arises
between us.
9. Lessons
learned
while
handling the
conflict:
Firstly, we should use assertive communication rather than
aggressive one as it will motivate other members to work with you
as the workplace environment, as well as behavior, plays an
important role for one who is working in an organization.
We learned about a problem-solving technique that rather than
arguing about a problem because of different viewpoints, we
should recognize the situation, understand it, and then try to find
out the best solution to deal with the situation.
Listening- we should first listen to the problem carefully as it will
help us in resolving the conflict by understanding the feelings and
emotions of others which also helps in maintaining relationships
with others
When we are having a conflict, we should talk about it with the
team or hold a meeting to have face-to-face communication for
solving the conflict and taking the review of peers in time so that if
they have any problems or any recommendations then we can give
attention to that.
