OR / Anesthesia Service
Chief Anesthesia Technician / LPN 2014 - Present
Consult Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures;
prepare anesthetizing locations for indicated procedure to include setting up and calibrating
monitoring devices; troubleshoot anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional
equipment to the proper department for repair. Assist anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile
technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central
intravenous and/or arterial line placement; airway management techniques including mask,
endotracheal and/or emergency methods and regional anesthesia techniques.
Assists with the administration and monitoring of anesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of
anesthesia techniques, instruments, supplies, and technology. Assist anesthesia providers with
physiological monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesia provider(s) of abnormal changes in
vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient. Obtain blood products and pharmaceuticals
2. assisting with preparation and delivery. Maintain immediate availability to assist in routine and
emergency procedures. Act as a resource and role model for other anesthesia technicians,
anesthesia providers, learners and other health care team members by providing technical
guidance and instruction as appropriate. Provide verbal and written feedback of interviewees and
peers as appropriate and as indicated by Director of OR and serve as an instructor/facilitator of
educational in-services for other anesthesia technicians. Acts as a role model for orientation and
training of anesthesia technicians and other health care team members. Assumes anesthesia
technician charge role in managing daily work schedule of anesthesia technicians and directing
care to provide an efficient and safe environment. Acquire and/or maintain certification by
obtaining annual continuing education requirements.
Involved with all aspects of the delivery of a patient's peri-operative anesthetic care, taking into
account the patients' religious and cultural beliefs and respecting their right to medical privacy
and dignity at all times. Provides a key role in the emergency resuscitation of patients.
Anesthesia technicians prepare equipment needed for the patient to safely undergo anesthesia.
This involves:
Prior to anesthesia
Checking and setting up the anesthesia machine
Preparing intravenous drugs
Preparing intravenous therapy administration equipment
Preparing a range of devices to maintain the patient's airway (e.g. laryngeal masks,
endotracheal tube)
Communicating with the patient when they arrive into the operating theatre
Establish peripheral intravenous access.
Applying anesthetic monitoring to help assess the patients' condition whilst under
anesthesia. This may include electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen
saturation devices.
During anesthesia:
The anesthesia technician’s role includes assisting with:
Inducing and maintaining adequate anesthesia.
Establishing and securing an airway.
Making sure that patients are positioned in such a way NOT to cause discomfort or injury
during their procedure.
Monitoring and maintaining patients' vital signs and anesthesia depth.
Temperature monitoring and regulation.
Collection and analysis of patient (blood) samples.
Acquiring and administering transfusion fluids and equipment.
After anesthesia:
Anesthesia technicians assist the anesthetist with:
Waking the patient.
Removing airway devices.
Transferring patients to post-operative care units
Regional variations exist, but anesthesia technicians may also be involved in assisting
with:
Intra-operative intra-aortic balloon pump setup, operating and monitoring.
3. Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter insertion and monitoring.
Intra-operative blood salvage setup, operating and monitoring.
Arterial blood gas analysis, including maintenance of analyzers.
Arterial line insertion and monitoring.
Peripheral IV line insertion.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Central IV lines.
Supervise eight Anesthesia Technicians in the department, creating work schedules, ordering
equipment and supplies daily. Assisting Provides and other Technicians as proper and needed.
Certified as POC Trainer for CRNAs and LPN/Anesthesia Technicians
