2. INTRODUCTION
Plastics are one of the most versatile
materials that we make use of . They are
all around us , whether we’re at home , at
work , when we go shopping , and even
when we’re on holidays . However , the
prevalence of plastics also means that we
have large amounts to dispose off .
Moreover recycling of plastic is very
important . Plastic recycling is important
because it is having a hugely negative
effect on our environment . Recycling
our waste products is not only better for
the environment , but it means that there
is less rubbish buried on landfill sites .
3. Process of
plastic
recycling
Step 1 : collection of
waste plastic
Step 2 : sorting of plastics
into categories
Step 3 : washing to
remove impurities
Step 4 : shredding and
resizing
Step 5 : identification and
separation of plastic
Step 6 : compounding
4. BENIFITS OF RECYCLING OF PLASTIC
* Energy conservation . Recycling a ton of plastic saves energy to 5.774
kWh . That’s the equivalent to the amount of energy consumed by two
people for a year .
* Reduced petroleum use . It’s estimated up to 40 percent of oil
consumption could be reduced through recycling plastic waste . That’s
16.3 barrels of oil per ton of recycled plastic .
* Co2 emission reduction . Reduced oil consumption means reduced
emission of co2 and other greenhouse gases produced during the
production of new plastics .
* Reduced landfill use . Fewer plastics in landfills means less emission of
common landfill gases like carbon dioxide and methene . Both gases
affect local communities through the ground and air , causing public
health problems and environmental damage .

6. SOME COMMON RECYCLED PLASTICS
♦ PET ( Polyethylene Terephthalate ) it is used for producing
low – pressure products like soft drink bottles & clothing fibers
.
♦ PVC ( Polyvinyl Chloride ) it is used to produce wires , pipes ,
bottles & clings films .
♦ HDPE ( High Density Poly Ethylene )
♦ LDPE ( Low Density Poly Ethylene ) it is used to make plastic
bags .
♦ PS ( Polymer ) it is used to make plastic cutlery and yogurt
containers.
