Depicting a stylised maiden holding aloft an old cushion-shaped diamond, between engraved flower decorations
to a plain hoop, mounted in gold, ring size P½
€ 1,000 - 1,500
It is ironic that René Boivin is a name well known in the jewellery world,as his life is relatively unknown. It is also interesting
to note that it was not always René Boivin that crafted the pieces that bear his name.
Boivin was born in Paris in 1864, he began his career in jewellery at a young age and, by the time he died in 1917, had become an
excellent designer and engraver, leaving behind him a wonderful legacy.
During the 1890s, he purchased several workshops, establishing himself at rue St.Anastase, then relocating in 1893 to rue deTur-
bigo. He married Jeanne Poiret, the first woman jeweller of the 20th century (sister of the famous couturier) and together they
created some of the most exciting and bold fashions of the early 1900s.
In the early 20th century Japanese art and antiques were very much en vogue and, as Boivin had a passion for antiques, it is no
surprise that this trend influenced his own jewellery designs. His skill as a goldsmith can be appreciated from beautifully finished
pieces and his interest in animals and nature inferred through jewellery themes.
After René’s death,Jeanne assumed control of the business and moved to avenue de I’Opera with Juliette Moutard and her daugh-
ter Germaine Boivin. They worked together for forty years, joined by Suzanne Belperron between 1921 and 1932.After Jeanne’s
death in 1959 the house was taken over by Louis Girard and in April 1991 the company became part of Aspery Group, with the
main office and store located on avenue Montaigne.
Art Noveau is an international style of art, architectures and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular
between 1890 and 1910.The gold brooch shows typical art nouveau style, with the piece inspired by natural forms and structures,
particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers.

€ 15,000 - 20,000
Throughout the 1920s, the House of Van Cleef &Arpels, as well as many of their competitors such as Boucheron and Cartier, catered
to the fashion of the RoaringTwenties by producing delicate evening bags and vanity cases known as “nécessaires”.The nécessaire was
a small hard-sided box exquisitely decorated and designed to contain powder compact, lipstick, tortoiseshell comb, mirror and, occa-
sionally, an ivory note card and pencil. However, on the occasion of a visit to his friend and loyal client, socialite Florence Jay Gould,
CharlesArpels noticed that she carried her belongings in a Lucky Strike cigarette tin. Thus, the idea for the “minaudiére” - a larger and
more glamorous accessory which would replace both the nécessaire and the evening bag - was born. Charles named his creation after
his wife Estelle, for her “minauderies” or simpering airs.
Made in gold or lacquer, the minaudiére contained numerous clever compartments designed to hold everything that an elegant lady
would need to carry - either by day or night - including powder, lipstick, make-up pots, comb, small change, cigarettes and lighter.
Some examples even included a retractable watch and were decorated and embellished with precious stones and pearls. The timeless
minaudiéres would continue to be created for devoted clients to carry and adore throughout the 1930s and beyond. Some minaudiéres
were even designed to correspond to various parures in the collection, meaning that any fashionable lady was obliged to own more
than one, if not a selection of cases, in order to match with different outfit choices.
Today, the minaudiére, or “box bag” as it can also be known now, is as practical as it is stylish.Although small, it is the perfect option
as a unique evening bag or dinner accessory.

The “Cordes Ludo” bracelets come from a collection inspired by the couturier and their relationship with the textiles, cloths
and ribbons which they weave into haute couture creations. In a similar way to the couturier, the jewellers of Van Cleef &
Arpels wove and braided solid threads of gold, shaping the metal into a precious ode to the twill fabric created by couturiers.
Embellished lightly with precious stones, carelessly knotted to one side and ending in stylish tassels, the “cordes ludo” bracelet
appears simple and effortlessly chic.
These twisted threads of gold were also woven into necklace chokers of gold rope, as in the case of the necklace also included
in this auction.

A FINE DIAMOND BROOCH, BY CHAUMET, CIRCA 1955
Of stylised openwork design, the principal round brilliant-cut diamond weighing approximately 1.40cts within a cluster
of marquise-shaped diamonds, to a triple spray of brilliant and tapered baguette-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum,
remaining diamonds approximately 8.00cts,signed Chaumet,within Chaumet fitted case,length 3.8cm
€ 8,000 - 12,000
Chaumet was founded in 1780 by Marie-Etienne Nitot, with an establishment at the heart of placeVendôme. His creativity and
quality of workmanship, led him to become one of the most sought-after jewellers in Europe and thus establish a loyal and prestigious
clientele. Since its inception Chaumet has preserved and continued the Parisian tradition of expertly crafted fine jewellery.
The history of Chaumet has been entwined with the History of France, with Nitot and his son, Francois Regnault Nitot becoming
the official jeweller to Napoleon during the Consulate and the Empire, creating tiaras, official court jewels and fashion accessories.
Napoleon’s marriage to Joséphine, then to Marie-Louise of Habsburg-Lorraine, Queen Marie-Antoinette’s great-niece, resulted in
some impressive commissions for Chaumet.
Following the fall of the Empire,Nitot’s successors Jean-Baptiste Fossin and his son,Jules, dedicated themselves to romantic jewellery
inspired by the decorative arts of the Italian Renaissance and of the French 17th-century.
In 1848, Jules Fossin set up a London branch in partnership with J.V., Morel, assisted by his son Prosper. On his return to Paris in
1954, Prosper Morel joined Jules Fossin whom he succeeded in 1868. Prosper Morel’s daughter married Joseph Chaumet in 1875.
With exceptional creativity and inspired by the re-enchantment of nature, Joseph Chaumet came to be recognised as an undisputed
master of the Belle Époque. In 1889, Chaumet took over the company and gave his name to the House.
In 2001, the LVMH Group acquired the house and entrusted the reigns toThierry Fritsch, an art lover who revived the business, all
while preserving its original spirit. Pascal Bourdariat was made the 12th head of the workshop, and as tradition dictates, a special
ceremony was held for the handover to initiate the new bearer of the tradition. The house’s skill is traditionally passed down from one
head of the workshop to another, without interruption, reflecting the creativity and excellence of each era.
For more than 230 years Chaumet’s excellence in high Jewellery has been passed down through generations of jewellers. Diamonds
and precious stones, carefully selected for their exceptional clarity and brilliance, are sculpted into round, cushion, oval, emerald or
the house’s signature pear-shaped cut, and then the jewellers, stone setters, polishers and engravers give life to the jewels, exhibited
in magnificent pieces of jewellery. With inspiration drawn from Art Nouveau, nature and travels, Chaumet ceaselessly reinvents its
aesthetic codes and creates jewels that are truly remarkable.
This elegant diamond brooch embodies a naturalistic theme, with the large round brilliant diamond surrounded by smaller brilliant
marquise shaped diamonds depicting a flower, all set to the side of an artistic design. This is a truly magnificent piece to be cherished,
increasing the glamour stakes of any outfit.

Pierino Frascarolo was born in Milan in 1928 and began his career in jewellery as an apprentice with the Fratelli Lunati
company. In time he created his own company with partner Aldo Lenti and moved the business, which was initially located in the
historic centre ofValenza, to Corso Matteotti. Frascarolo reached his creative peak in the 1960s, with his gold and enamel animals.
The production of these pieces used machinery and casting techniques that were most advanced for that period, employing up to
50 craftsmen. He was one of the first jewellers inValenza to experiment with other materials, producing items in gold and steel
and using materials such as engraved ivory. From 1967 the pieces carried a small oval plaque with the inscription ‘FC MODELE
DEPOSÉ, MADE IN ITALY, 347AL, 750/18k, welded on the inside of the piece.
After Lenti and Frascarolo parted ways, he went into business with Mr.Adriano Gugliada forming Frascarolo & Co. in NewYork
city. Frascarolo died inValenza in July 1976 at the young age of forty eight, at which point Frascarolo & Co. ceased operations but
some of his designs are still influencing jewellers today.
The two gold and enamel lion brooches are signature animal designs of Frascarolo in the 1960s.The playful brooches are set with
diamonds and precious stones creating charming fun pieces.

Frenchman Louis Gérard worked for many years for the world-famous house ofVan Cleef & Arpels before making the
decision to establish a maison of his own in 1968.Thus, the house of M Gérard was born and opened its doors for the first time
at 8Avenue Montaigne in Paris.
Gérard worked primarily with the AtelierVassort workshop producing magnificent suites of jewellery of the highest quality and
craftsmanship and lavishly decorated with diamonds and precious gems.A character with a large personality, Gérard delighted in
throwing fabulously stylish parties from Cannes to Monte Carlo, for the jet-setting elite he proudly called clients. His boutiques
were situated in London, Lausanne, Monte Carlo and Gstaad, an upscale resort town in the SwissAlps.
However, the rapid expansion and extravagant entertaining budget sadly proved unsustainable and, in 1985, Gérard was forced
to sell out to a group of American investors. He later succeeded in re-gaining his company and re-launched under the name of
Louis Gérard, Joaillier International but this success was short-lived and by 1991, the firm was forced once again to shut its doors.
Today, pieces from the prestigious house continue to be highly sought after for their magnificent quality.A number of pieces by the
house appeared as highlights of “The Royal House Sale” at Christie’s Geneva in November 2006, one of the top ten most expensive
private jewellery collections ever sold at auction.

time was the centre of the Parian luxury trade. It was one of the first companies to open a boutique in the famed
PlaceVendôme in Paris, where Boucheron still operates successfully today. In 1897, Boucheron opened a store
in Moscow, later transferred to Saint Petersburg in 1911 (the Moscow boutique was reopened in 2003). In 1903
a store in London’s New Bond Street and an office in NewYork were established. More establishments followed
in Japan in 1973, Shanghai, Dubai in 2005 and finally Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in 2006.Today House of

Rich in heritage and craftsmanship, the fourth-generation, family-run House of Repossi is synonymous with elegance and style. The
house is renowned for its exquisite, ornate and diamond-studded creations which incorporate exceptional stones into pieces that
seamlessly blend contemporary designs with classical elements.
The brand was first created in Turin, Italy by Constantino Repossi in 1920. Upon completing his studies in industrial design, the
young Constantino took over his father’s jewellery business and atelier in post-war Italy. The first Repossi store was opened in 1949
inTurin during Italy’s modernist era.Art Deco andAvant-Garde styles prevailed in the first Repossi collections, which demonstrated
Costantino’s ability to combine both his technical and artistic backgrounds.
Subsequently, Constantino’s son,Alberto, began designing pieces at the age of seventeen after learning the craftsmanship of the fami-
ly’s atelier. In 1974,Alberto took charge of the house and brought the brand to international recognition. UnderAlberto, the Repossi
House saw the opening of a flagship store in Monte Carlo in 1977, followed by the Paris store in PlaceVendôme in Paris in 1986.
Repossi designs became famed for their elegance and were celebrated by many influential people.Repossi became the official purvey-
or to HRHThe Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1994 which gave the house worldwide recognition. Repossi also became the official
supplier to the Saudi Royal family, and to the Royal families of Qatar and Dubai. The house continues to work with royalty in many
countries, and its designs are enjoyed by socialites, jewellery connoisseurs and celebrities worldwide.Today, much of the work is still
done in the same workshops that were used in the 1920s.
Following tradition,Alberto’s daughter, Gaia Repossi, is now leading the family business which is nearing its 100th anniversary and
is more successful today than ever before.

Jewellery designer Seaman Schepps is the embodiment of theAmerican Dream. Schepps was born into an immigrant family and grew
up in tenements on the Lower East Side of NewYork. His marvellous jewellery designs took the American market by storm in the
1930s allowing Schepps to rise through the social strata.
With his pioneering designs including chunky brooches,“barberic” bracelets and “bubble” earrings, Schepps defined a new style of the
American woman and his jewellery featured on the covers of top fashion publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Look. He
counted Katherine Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess ofWindsor andAndyWarhol, as well as members of the Du
Pont, Mellon and Rockerfeller families, all among his clients.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Schepps began to experiment with rock crystal. Carving and engraving the precious stone, he
created pieces in which it complimented and counterbalanced other precious gem stones such as emerald or jade. He also produced
exquisite examples which allowed the rock crystal to shine in its own light, similar in design to the present lot (albeit a contemporary
piece inspired by the designs of the founder). Rock crystal enjoyed a resurgence in the 1960s when Schepps created further pieces of
clean simplistic design such as the “barrel” ear clips and ring and the familiar “shell” ear clips composed solely of rock crystal paired
with yellow gold.
After Schepps’ death in 1972, Patricia ScheppsVaill continued to make jewellery in her father’s style, often using elements from pieces
he had designed.Vaill developed a new look in jewellery aimed at appealing to a younger clientele. After twenty years at the helm of
her father’s company,Vaill retired and passed the baton to Jay Bauer andAnthony Hopenhajm who have continued to produce jewellery
in the unique Schepps style.
Today’s designs continue to draw on the Schepps archives which contain over 5,000 detailed jewellery renderings, and 650 moulds.
The pieces created in the workshop continue to be made with cutting-edge methods and inventive, unusual materials. Classic pieces
are rendered in new materials and signature materials are used for bold new styles. The flagship store on Park Avenue at 58th Street
continues to attract socialites, movie stars, royalty and trend-setters who are drawn to Schepps’ innovative use of exotic materials.
Today, some 50 years after his death, he continues to inspire modern jewellers.

Fred Samuel (1908-2006) established his jewellery brand in 1936 in Paris, where he spent much of his professional life.
Originally from Buenos Aires, born into a family that dealt in precious stones, it was no surprise he conceived a passion for
cultured pearls and won recognition as a leading expert in the field.
Fred imbued his designs with the energy of South America, saying my creations are inspired by the life, the light, the move-
ment, the energy. His passion for life and light is expressed in his jewellery through the use of coloured gemstones and playful
motifs.
DuringWorldWar II,Fred Samuel fled Paris and became an interpreter for theAllies. The name Fred was adopted by the brand
post war, after it was imposed by German occupiers instead of‘Fred Samuel’ because of the Jewish origins of its founder.
Describing himself in 1936 as a‘Contemporary Creative Jeweller’, he staked a claim for modernity based on striking jewel-
lery, pieces with rounded, curvaceous lines. Fred became famous for jewels designed by Jean Cocteau and for its famous cli-
ents, such as Marlène Dietrich and the royal family of Monaco, including princess Grace. In 1966 Fred Paris was the inventor
of cable jewellery‘Force 10’ (made of stainless steel) and this feature is still very prominent today in ring, bracelet, pendant
and necklace designs.
As the brand grew, new stores were opened across the world; 1976 Monte Carlo, 1981 Cannes, 2001Tokyo and 2007 Beijing,
Dubai and Bogotá.The company became the property of LVMH in 1996 and Fred collaborated with Kate Moss for the design
of an exclusive collection in 2012.
Fred Paris designed the iconic 23 heart-cut ruby necklace interlaced with diamonds, which was gifted to Julia Roberts by
Richard Gere in the film PrettyWoman. The last major film for which Fred Paris provided jewellery was Casino Royale star-
ring Daniel Craig, featuring the star collection pendant and earrings.
The two beautiful diamond set pieces are perfect examples showcasing the Force 10 feature. The double strand cross over
diamond collar, with the Force 10 link off set from the centre is a very glamorous and modern piece, that could be worn both
day or night, accompanied by the spectacular pave-set diamond ring. Both pieces have a pear and round brilliant diamond set
in the centre of the Force 10 link, adding extra sparkle and artistry to the pieces.

Imperial topaz, also know as precious topaz, is the rarest colour of topaz with a golden orange to pink hue.The name imperial topaz
originated in nineteenth-century Russia. At the time, the Ural Mountains were topaz’s leading source, and the gemstone mined there was
named to honour the Russian tsar who prized its luxurious golden-sherry hues. Ownership of the gem was restricted to the royal family.
Today fine specimens come from the Ouro Preto mines of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Imperial topaz is classified as a very rare collector’s gem
and true Imperial topaz is always untreated.
There is some disagreement over what colour the term imperial topaz represents, and some consider it the most misused term in the
trade. Sometimes it used to describe gems of medium reddish orange to orange-red colour and many dealers insist that a stone must show
a reddish pleochroic colour to be called Imperial topaz. The reddish pleochroic colour often appears at the ends of fashioned gems, such as

In 1967 Giuseppe Picchiotti started creating his own jewellery collection in a workshop, which he opened in the small Ital-
ian district ofValenza.Today his name is synonymous with miniature works of art, displaying a fusion of classical styling and modern
elegance, and featuring gemstones like ruby, amethyst and diamond set in exquisite gold, as seen in pieces from the Picchiotti Seta,
Imperial, L Marquise and Luna collections. Each piece is designed and crafted entirely in house, assuring designs are made to the high
standards the Italian family owned company pride themselves on.
The white and yellow diamond necklace, earrings and ring, are an elegant suite that display the modern elegance for which Picchiotti is
renowned. The delicate pavé-set pieces set alongside single claw set diamonds create a contrast for the eye and result in a very pleasing

  • 20. 20 Tuesday 14th May 2019 25 AN ART NOUVEAU GOLD BROOCH, BY RENE BOIVIN, CIRCA 1900 Designed as an openwork circlet of engraved flowers and leaves, in 18K gold, with maker’s mark, numbered, length 2.8cm € 700 - 900 26 AN ART NOUVEAU DIAMOND RING, CIRCA 1900 Depicting a stylised maiden holding aloft an old cushion-shaped diamond, between engraved flower decorations to a plain hoop, mounted in gold, ring size P½ € 1,000 - 1,500 It is ironic that René Boivin is a name well known in the jewellery world,as his life is relatively unknown. It is also interesting to note that it was not always René Boivin that crafted the pieces that bear his name. Boivin was born in Paris in 1864, he began his career in jewellery at a young age and, by the time he died in 1917, had become an excellent designer and engraver, leaving behind him a wonderful legacy. During the 1890s, he purchased several workshops, establishing himself at rue St.Anastase, then relocating in 1893 to rue deTur- bigo. He married Jeanne Poiret, the first woman jeweller of the 20th century (sister of the famous couturier) and together they created some of the most exciting and bold fashions of the early 1900s. In the early 20th century Japanese art and antiques were very much en vogue and, as Boivin had a passion for antiques, it is no surprise that this trend influenced his own jewellery designs. His skill as a goldsmith can be appreciated from beautifully finished pieces and his interest in animals and nature inferred through jewellery themes. After René’s death,Jeanne assumed control of the business and moved to avenue de I’Opera with Juliette Moutard and her daugh- ter Germaine Boivin. They worked together for forty years, joined by Suzanne Belperron between 1921 and 1932.After Jeanne’s death in 1959 the house was taken over by Louis Girard and in April 1991 the company became part of Aspery Group, with the main office and store located on avenue Montaigne. Art Noveau is an international style of art, architectures and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910.The gold brooch shows typical art nouveau style, with the piece inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers.

However, on the occasion of a visit to his friend and loyal client, socialite Florence Jay Gould, CharlesArpels noticed that she carried her belongings in a Lucky Strike cigarette tin. Thus, the idea for the “minaudiére” - a larger and more glamorous accessory which would replace both the nécessaire and the evening bag - was born. Charles named his creation after his wife Estelle, for her “minauderies” or simpering airs. Made in gold or lacquer, the minaudiére contained numerous clever compartments designed to hold everything that an elegant lady would need to carry - either by day or night - including powder, lipstick, make-up pots, comb, small change, cigarettes and lighter. Some examples even included a retractable watch and were decorated and embellished with precious stones and pearls. The timeless minaudiéres would continue to be created for devoted clients to carry and adore throughout the 1930s and beyond. Some minaudiéres were even designed to correspond to various parures in the collection, meaning that any fashionable lady was obliged to own more than one, if not a selection of cases, in order to match with different outfit choices. Today, the minaudiére, or “box bag” as it can also be known now, is as practical as it is stylish.Although small, it is the perfect option as a unique evening bag or dinner accessory. • 30. 30 Tuesday 14th May 2019 40 A DIAMOND AND GOLD ‘CORDES LUDO’ JARRETIERE BRACELET, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, CIRCA 1945-50 The flexible bracelet designed as four-rows of gold ropework, with pavé-set diamond cap and tassel terminals, to the round brilliant-cut diamond bar clasp with gold ropework trim, mounted in 18K gold, signedVan Cleef & Arpels, numbered,French assay marks, maker’s mark‘P&Fils’ length 26.4cm € 7,000 - 9,000 Van Cleef & Arpels exhibited widely throughout the course of its rich history. In 1992,The Palais Galliera, also formally known as the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, held a major retrospective of the creations of Van Cleef & Arpels. The exhibition included pieces from the House’s own collection, put together over the years by JacquesArpels, as well as a number of pieces loaned from loyal clients of the House.Article number 302 in the original exhibition catalogue is a “Bracelet Cordes Ludo”,exactly like the example included in this auction.Dating from 1949,it is described in the exhibition catalogue as“Collier trois rang de cordes or, le fermoir et le haut des glands est en brilliants montés sur platine. CollectionVan Cleef & Arpels No d’origine 61967”. The “Cordes Ludo” bracelets come from a collection inspired by the couturier and their relationship with the textiles, cloths and ribbons which they weave into haute couture creations. In a similar way to the couturier, the jewellers of Van Cleef & Arpels wove and braided solid threads of gold, shaping the metal into a precious ode to the twill fabric created by couturiers. Embellished lightly with precious stones, carelessly knotted to one side and ending in stylish tassels, the “cordes ludo” bracelet appears simple and effortlessly chic. These twisted threads of gold were also woven into necklace chokers of gold rope, as in the case of the necklace also included in this auction. ©PhotoCredit:VanCleef&Arpels,CataloguePalaisGalliera1992,P.159

  • 36. 36 Tuesday 14th May 2019 47 A FINE DIAMOND BROOCH, BY CHAUMET, CIRCA 1955 Of stylised openwork design, the principal round brilliant-cut diamond weighing approximately 1.40cts within a cluster of marquise-shaped diamonds, to a triple spray of brilliant and tapered baguette-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, remaining diamonds approximately 8.00cts,signed Chaumet, within Chaumet fitted case, length 3.8cm € 8,000 - 12,000 Chaumet was founded in 1780 by Marie-Etienne Nitot, with an establishment at the heart of placeVendôme. His creativity and quality of workmanship, led him to become one of the most sought-after jewellers in Europe and thus establish a loyal and prestigious clientele. Since its inception Chaumet has preserved and continued the Parisian tradition of expertly crafted fine jewellery. The history of Chaumet has been entwined with the History of France, with Nitot and his son, Francois Regnault Nitot becoming the official jeweller to Napoleon during the Consulate and the Empire, creating tiaras, official court jewels and fashion accessories. Napoleon’s marriage to Joséphine, then to Marie-Louise of Habsburg-Lorraine, Queen Marie-Antoinette’s great-niece, resulted in some impressive commissions for Chaumet. Following the fall of the Empire,Nitot’s successors Jean-Baptiste Fossin and his son,Jules, dedicated themselves to romantic jewellery inspired by the decorative arts of the Italian Renaissance and of the French 17th-century. In 1848, Jules Fossin set up a London branch in partnership with J.V., Morel, assisted by his son Prosper. On his return to Paris in 1954, Prosper Morel joined Jules Fossin whom he succeeded in 1868. Prosper Morel’s daughter married Joseph Chaumet in 1875. With exceptional creativity and inspired by the re-enchantment of nature, Joseph Chaumet came to be recognised as an undisputed master of the Belle Époque. In 1889, Chaumet took over the company and gave his name to the House. In 2001, the LVMH Group acquired the house and entrusted the reigns toThierry Fritsch, an art lover who revived the business, all while preserving its original spirit. Pascal Bourdariat was made the 12th head of the workshop, and as tradition dictates, a special ceremony was held for the handover to initiate the new bearer of the tradition. The house’s skill is traditionally passed down from one head of the workshop to another, without interruption, reflecting the creativity and excellence of each era. For more than 230 years Chaumet’s excellence in high Jewellery has been passed down through generations of jewellers. Diamonds and precious stones, carefully selected for their exceptional clarity and brilliance, are sculpted into round, cushion, oval, emerald or the house’s signature pear-shaped cut, and then the jewellers, stone setters, polishers and engravers give life to the jewels, exhibited in magnificent pieces of jewellery. With inspiration drawn from Art Nouveau, nature and travels, Chaumet ceaselessly reinvents its aesthetic codes and creates jewels that are truly remarkable. This elegant diamond brooch embodies a naturalistic theme, with the large round brilliant diamond surrounded by smaller brilliant marquise shaped diamonds depicting a flower, all set to the side of an artistic design. This is a truly magnificent piece to be cherished, increasing the glamour stakes of any outfit. Frascarolo reached his creative peak in the 1960s, with his gold and enamel animals. The production of these pieces used machinery and casting techniques that were most advanced for that period, employing up to 50 craftsmen. He was one of the first jewellers inValenza to experiment with other materials, producing items in gold and steel and using materials such as engraved ivory. Gérard worked primarily with the AtelierVassort workshop producing magnificent suites of jewellery of the highest quality and craftsmanship and lavishly decorated with diamonds and precious gems.A character with a large personality, Gérard delighted in throwing fabulously stylish parties from Cannes to Monte Carlo, for the jet-setting elite he proudly called clients. His boutiques were situated in London, Lausanne, Monte Carlo and Gstaad, an upscale resort town in the SwissAlps. However, the rapid expansion and extravagant entertaining budget sadly proved unsustainable and, in 1985, Gérard was forced to sell out to a group of American investors. He later succeeded in re-gaining his company and re-launched under the name of Louis Gérard, Joaillier International but this success was short-lived and by 1991, the firm was forced once again to shut its doors. Today, pieces from the prestigious house continue to be highly sought after for their magnificent quality.A number of pieces by the house appeared as highlights of “The Royal House Sale” at Christie’s Geneva in November 2006, one of the top ten most expensive private jewellery collections ever sold at auction.

Upon completing his studies in industrial design, the young Constantino took over his father’s jewellery business and atelier in post-war Italy. The first Repossi store was opened in 1949 inTurin during Italy’s modernist era.Art Deco andAvant-Garde styles prevailed in the first Repossi collections, which demonstrated Costantino’s ability to combine both his technical and artistic backgrounds. Subsequently, Constantino’s son,Alberto, began designing pieces at the age of seventeen after learning the craftsmanship of the fami- ly’s atelier. In 1974,Alberto took charge of the house and brought the brand to international recognition. UnderAlberto, the Repossi House saw the opening of a flagship store in Monte Carlo in 1977, followed by the Paris store in PlaceVendôme in Paris in 1986. Repossi designs became famed for their elegance and were celebrated by many influential people.Repossi became the official purvey- or to HRHThe Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1994 which gave the house worldwide recognition. Repossi also became the official supplier to the Saudi Royal family, and to the Royal families of Qatar and Dubai. The house continues to work with royalty in many countries, and its designs are enjoyed by socialites, jewellery connoisseurs and celebrities worldwide.Today, much of the work is still done in the same workshops that were used in the 1920s. Following tradition,Alberto’s daughter, Gaia Repossi, is now leading the family business which is nearing its 100th anniversary and is more successful today than ever before.

Schepps was born into an immigrant family and grew up in tenements on the Lower East Side of NewYork. His marvellous jewellery designs took the American market by storm in the 1930s allowing Schepps to rise through the social strata. With his pioneering designs including chunky brooches,“barberic” bracelets and “bubble” earrings, Schepps defined a new style of the American woman and his jewellery featured on the covers of top fashion publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Look. He counted Katherine Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess ofWindsor andAndyWarhol, as well as members of the Du Pont, Mellon and Rockerfeller families, all among his clients. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Schepps began to experiment with rock crystal. Carving and engraving the precious stone, he created pieces in which it complimented and counterbalanced other precious gem stones such as emerald or jade. He also produced exquisite examples which allowed the rock crystal to shine in its own light, similar in design to the present lot (albeit a contemporary piece inspired by the designs of the founder). Rock crystal enjoyed a resurgence in the 1960s when Schepps created further pieces of clean simplistic design such as the “barrel” ear clips and ring and the familiar “shell” ear clips composed solely of rock crystal paired with yellow gold. After Schepps’ death in 1972, Patricia ScheppsVaill continued to make jewellery in her father’s style, often using elements from pieces he had designed.Vaill developed a new look in jewellery aimed at appealing to a younger clientele. After twenty years at the helm of her father’s company,Vaill retired and passed the baton to Jay Bauer andAnthony Hopenhajm who have continued to produce jewellery in the unique Schepps style. Today’s designs continue to draw on the Schepps archives which contain over 5,000 detailed jewellery renderings, and 650 moulds. The pieces created in the workshop continue to be made with cutting-edge methods and inventive, unusual materials. Classic pieces are rendered in new materials and signature materials are used for bold new styles. The flagship store on Park Avenue at 58th Street continues to attract socialites, movie stars, royalty and trend-setters who are drawn to Schepps’ innovative use of exotic materials. Today, some 50 years after his death, he continues to inspire modern jewellers.

Originally from Buenos Aires, born into a family that dealt in precious stones, it was no surprise he conceived a passion for cultured pearls and won recognition as a leading expert in the field. Fred imbued his designs with the energy of South America, saying my creations are inspired by the life, the light, the move- ment, the energy. His passion for life and light is expressed in his jewellery through the use of coloured gemstones and playful motifs. DuringWorldWar II,Fred Samuel fled Paris and became an interpreter for theAllies. The name Fred was adopted by the brand post war, after it was imposed by German occupiers instead of‘Fred Samuel’ because of the Jewish origins of its founder. Describing himself in 1936 as a‘Contemporary Creative Jeweller’, he staked a claim for modernity based on striking jewel- lery, pieces with rounded, curvaceous lines. Fred became famous for jewels designed by Jean Cocteau and for its famous cli- ents, such as Marlène Dietrich and the royal family of Monaco, including princess Grace. In 1966 Fred Paris was the inventor of cable jewellery‘Force 10’ (made of stainless steel) and this feature is still very prominent today in ring, bracelet, pendant and necklace designs. As the brand grew, new stores were opened across the world; 1976 Monte Carlo, 1981 Cannes, 2001Tokyo and 2007 Beijing, Dubai and Bogotá.The company became the property of LVMH in 1996 and Fred collaborated with Kate Moss for the design of an exclusive collection in 2012. Fred Paris designed the iconic 23 heart-cut ruby necklace interlaced with diamonds, which was gifted to Julia Roberts by Richard Gere in the film PrettyWoman. The last major film for which Fred Paris provided jewellery was Casino Royale star- ring Daniel Craig, featuring the star collection pendant and earrings. The two beautiful diamond set pieces are perfect examples showcasing the Force 10 feature. The double strand cross over diamond collar, with the Force 10 link off set from the centre is a very glamorous and modern piece, that could be worn both day or night, accompanied by the spectacular pave-set diamond ring. Both pieces have a pear and round brilliant diamond set in the centre of the Force 10 link, adding extra sparkle and artistry to the pieces.

Ownership of the gem was restricted to the royal family. Today fine specimens come from the Ouro Preto mines of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Imperial topaz is classified as a very rare collector’s gem and true Imperial topaz is always untreated. There is some disagreement over what colour the term imperial topaz represents, and some consider it the most misused term in the trade. Sometimes it used to describe gems of medium reddish orange to orange-red colour and many dealers insist that a stone must show a reddish pleochroic colour to be called Imperial topaz. The reddish pleochroic colour often appears at the ends of fashioned gems, such as pears and ovals, that have an otherwise yellow-to-orange bodycolor. The pear-shaped imperial topaz and diamond cluster ring is a statement piece. The warm golden hued lively centre stone, that displays a reddish pleochroic colour at the point and end, confirms its status as Imperial topaz.
