This is a timed online-only auction
This catalogue exclusively contains timed online-only auction lots and will not be offered as partof a live
auction. Bids for these lot(s) may be executed in one of two easy ways:- either by on-linebids through your
My Adams account on our website or by standard written commission bid left with a member of staff.
What is a Timed Auction?
A timed online-only auction is automated and takes place solely online through our website
www.adams.ie. The bidding for each lot is opened at a predetermined level, set by the
auctioneer, and runs for a set period of time, in this instance from 3pm on Friday 31st
July
2020. During this period of open bidding you will be able to see the current winning bid on
each lot. You may place a higher maximum bid of your choice and the bidding will automatically
increase by the next increment. If your maximum bid is several increments higher than the
current bid, the bidding will still only increase by one increment until you are bid against when it will
move up one in your favour. This process will continue until your maximum amount is outbid.
Bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the current winning bidder, or if they
have been outbid by another competing bidder. If you have been outbid and the auction is
still open, you are free to leave a higher bid. At the end of the defined bidding period, 10am on Monday
10th
August, if the highest bid offered meets the minimum price designated by the Auctioneer (i.e. the
seller’s reserve price), the lot is sold. With a timed auction, the closing time is staggered, with bidding
for lot 1 ending at 6pm and each subsequent lot closing one minute after the previous. If there is a flurry
of bidding on a lot just as it reaches its closing time, the lot is kept open for an extended period (c. two
minutes extra) to enable everybody to fairly get their bids in.
All winning bidders will be notified by email once the auction has fully ended.
Steps to participate:
• First, log in to, or register for, a My Adams account (A valid credit/debit card is
required)
• Visit www.adams.ie, click on Sign In and then register.
• Visit the timed online auction catalogue within the Forthcoming Auctions tab.
• Find the lot number you are interested in.
• Place your maximum bid, the current lead bid will be displayed along with the
number of bidders already bidding on the lot. The minimum bid required will
also be outlined.
• If you do not have an email address and cannot set up a My Adam’s account, please
contact our staff who will be happy to help you in placing a bid.
How your maximum bid works:
By placing your maximum bid, the system will automatically adjust your bid to reflect the
next winning bid increment which could be lower than your maximum bid. Your bid will
automatically increase should someone else bid, only up to your maximum bid.
Example: Bidder A leaves a maximum bid of €100, bidder B leaves a maximum bid of €200 on
the same lot. Bidder A is now knocked out of the lead and bidder B holds the current winning
bid that auto adjusts to €110 (NB not their maximum bid). The system auto adjusts the bid
to the next winning increment. User B’s bid will only be further executed if another user bids
above their current bid of €110 up to their maximum of €200, after which they will be knocked
out and an e-mail issued advising them to increase their bid.
• If you are outbid you will be notified immediately by e-mail
• To increase your bid, simply log back in and up your bid
• When the timed auction finishes, winning bidders will be notified by e-mail
• Buyers premium plus VAT (25% in total) will be added to your winning bid
amount.
• An invoice will issue and you can securely pay online through our website or in person
or by bank transfer. Your invoice will detail all the payment & collection particulars.

Buyers’ Premium
Please note Buyer’s Premium plus VAT is 25%. Where a lot is being shipped outside of the EU, the VAT
on Buyers Premium may be Zero rated for VAT purposes being an Export. Adam’s need to secure proof
of export from a recommended shipper in order to avail of this facility. Our Accounts team can answer
any queries you may have in this regard
Payment
All purchases must be paid for within three calendar days of the sale. Our payment terms are cash, bank-
er’s draft or cheque drawn on an Irish bank. Cheques will take a minimum of eight working days to clear
the bank, unless they have been vouched to our satisfaction prior to the sale, or you have a previous
cheque payment history with Adam’s. We also accept the following Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, &
American Express (subject to a surcharge of 3.65%). For debit cards including Laser card payments there
are daily limits on payments. Bank Transfer details are available on request. Please ensure that all bank
charges are paid in addition to the invoice total, in order to avoid delays in release of the items. Goods
will only be released upon clearance through the bank of all monies due.
Collection
Collection of purchases is the responsibility of the buyer. We are happy to assist the buyer by rec-
ommending a carrier, however goods remain at the buyer’s risk from the fall of the hammer. Goods
remaining uncollected three days after the auction date may be subject to storage & handling charges,
therefore it is important that you make collection within the designated time, as detailed in the import-
ant information for purchasers in your sale catalogue. If you are unable to remove your item immediately
you will need to arrange storage and shipping. For international deliveries an export licence may be
required. While we can provide Certificates of Antiquity, it is the responsibility of the buyer to assess any
export and custom requirements.
This is intended as a guide only. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact
us by either telephone or email. We look forward to seeing you at auction.

William Hincks was born in Waterford, and in early life was apprenticed to a blacksmith. Self-taught as an artist, his name first appears in 1773, when he
was living in York Street, Dublin, and was an exhibitor of portraits in crayons at the Society of Artists in William Street. He made similar contributions the
following year; and in 1775 he sent five works in oils and five in chalks. In 1777 he exhibited six portraits, including one of “A Siberian Cat, in possession
of Lady St. George. In 1780 he went to London, and one of his first works on his arrival was a series of illustrations designed for an edition of Tristram
Shandy.
This remarkable work by Hincks representing the process of producing linen from preparing the ground and sowing, to the arrival of the finished mate-
rial for exportation at the Linen Hall in Dublin. The depiction of an agri/industrial process is unique in Irish eighteenth century literature.
The series consists of twelve plates, each plate measuring approximately 42 by 35cm. The set was republished in 1791 by R. Pollard, Spafields, London.

HARRY CLARKE (1889-1931)
Original pencilled design for a single light stained glass window
In nine panels, hard and soft pencils on cream paper, 29.5 x 7cm
The panels with inked outlines, mounted, showing the bearded figure of
the adult Christ holding a staff, standing below a circular vignette showing
figures attending an old man in bed, over a matching vignette showing
the Virgin and Child on a donkey, flanked by angels with long hair, their
gowns with Celtic ornamentation, the entire composition headed by an
angel with long hair and crossed hands, over ranks of faces in profile
looking in from left and right, hatched in freehand and elaborately orna-
mented throughout in the style of Harry Clarke. The vignette showing the
Virgin on donkey is reminiscent of Clarke’s illustration to Chesterton’s ‘The
Donkey’ in The Year’s At The Spring.
An attractive design, apparently executed freehand except for the circular
forms, the composition full of the minute detail characteristic of Clarke.
Taken as a whole, the design does not appear to match any of Clarke’s
published windows. It may be a sketch for an uncompleted project

HARRY CLARKE (1889 - 1931)
Original pencilled design for a three light stained glass window with smaller openings above
Hard and soft pencils on cream paper, 15 x 27cm
The windows with inked outlines, mounted, showing Christ crucified on a circular ground, flanked on either side by a bishop with crook,
with lightly sketched vignettes including an eagle and a round tower, the foot of the cross with Celtic patterns, the upper central opening
showing God the father with outstretched hands, a radiant triangle behind his crowned head. The vignette in the upper opening, overlook-
ing the design, is very like the similarly placed vignette in Clarke’s Coronation of the Blessed Virgin window in Glasgow (also a three-light
window), both showing a deity with outstretched hands, wearing a stepped crown, with a triangular form behind the head (see Costigan
& Cullen, Strangest Genius, colour plate opposite p. 255). The similarity is surely more than coincidental, although the remainder of the
design does not match the Glasgow window.
The present design may therefore be an earlier version, or a sketch for a different and uncompleted project, one part of which went into
the finished design for the Glasgow window. In either case it is an attractive and desirable item.

LADIES OF LLANGOLLEN MANUSCRIPT RECEIPT
Manuscript Receipt:‘Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Ponsonby have the pleasure to enclose
Mr.André’s the amount of his Bill £9.6.0 with an addition of 4p for postage and the delay
which they are sorry has Occurred in discharging it.’
Dated at Llangollen Vale 7th January 1809. Single page (18 x 23cm). Paper repair to verso. With address
panel and stamp.
The “Ladies of Llangollen”, Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, were two upper-class Irish women
whose relationship during the late 18th and early 19th century scandalized and fascinated their con-
temporaries.
Eleanor Charlotte Butler was a member of the Butlers, the Earls (and later Dukes) of Ormond. Butler was
considered an over-educated bookworm by her family, who resided at the Butler family seat Kilkenny
Castle. She spoke French and was educated in a convent in France. Her mother tried to make her join a
convent because she was remaining a spinster.
Sarah Ponsonby lived with relatives in Woodstock, County Kilkenny, Ireland. She was a second cousin of
Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough, and thus a second cousin once removed of his daughter
Lady Caroline Lamb.
Their families lived 25km from each other. They met in 1768, and quickly became close. Over the years
they formulated a plan for a private rural retreat. It was their dream to live an unconventional life togeth-
er.(see note online)

AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED BY ARTHUR GUINNESS,
dated at James’s Gate, 19th March 1795
Single page (18.5 x 23.5cm) written on one side only. In this letter he discusses
Mr. Gardiner’s bill which has being lodged to the credit of his account in the
Bank of Ireland. Addressed to ‘My Lord’ “Inclosed yr Lordship has my Acknowl-
edgment that I am to provide for payment of Your Lordships acceptance for
£335.19.2 dew 15 April next.”
Arthur Guinness (1725-1803) brewer and the founder of the Guinness brewery
business and dynasty. He was also an entrepreneur and philanthropist. At twen-
ty-seven, in 1752, Guinness’s godfather Arthur Price, the Church of Ireland Arch-
bishop of Cashel, bequeathed him £100 in his will. Guinness invested the money
and in 1755 had a brewery at Leixlip, just 17 km from Dublin. In 1759, Guinness
went to the city and set up his own business. He took a 9,000-year lease on the
4-acre brewery at St. James’s Gate from the descendants of Sir Mark Rainsford
for an annual rent of £45.
Arthur Guinness’s parents Richard and Elizabeth were both the children of tenant
farmers in Dublin and Kildare. Richard’s family claimed a descent from the Gaelic
Magennis clan of County Down. Recent DNA evidence however suggests de-
scent from the McCartans, another County Down clan, whose spiritual home of
Kinelarty included the townland of “Guiness” near Ballynahinch, County Down.
Luke Gardiner, 1st Viscount Mountjoy (1745-1798) landowner and politician. He
was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. He was the son of Charles Gar-
diner by his wife Florinda, daughter of Robert Norman. His sister Anne later be-
came Countess of Clancarty. In 1773 he married Elizabeth, daughter of William
Montgomery, an MP for Ballynakill and later a Baronet. Their children included
a son, Charles John, and a daughter Margaret, who later became Countess of
Donoughmore.
Gardiner represented Dublin County in the Irish House of Commons from 1773
to 1789. He was appointed to the Irish Privy Council in 1780 and created Baron
Mountjoy in 1789 and Viscount Mountjoy both in the Peerage of Ireland. Lord
Mountjoy was killed in action at the age of fifty three, leading his regiment at the
Battle of New Ross. He was succeeded by his son Charles, who was later created
Earl of Blessington.

From M(ary Anne) O’Conor to Thomas L. Kelly in Dublin dated at Clonalis, 7 March (1840). Three pages (18.5
x 23 cm). with address panel stamp and wax seal. In very good condition.
A rare and interesting letter: “I dislike keeping money in the House and we never have beyond a certain sum
in our Bank at Castlerea and the tenants immediately near. For convenience pay me instead of our Agent
who resides at present in Sligo. I enclose £100 which I shall feel exceedingly obliged to you to get Messieurs
Curtis & Power to put in the three and a half old per cents for OCD [O’Conor Don] I had a few lines from OCD
today he says the rumours of dissolution are again gaining ground. The Corn Law Question is making great
progress in England he says and even the Tories are willing to compromise it if they took office. How Ireland
will be affected by such a change it is hard to say but certainly her Landed Proprietors deprecate it however
it is all the same if the Question be carried in England it will pass ... . “
Mary Anne O’Conor, daughter of Major Blake of Towerhill, County Mayo, married Denis O’Conor of Bela-
nagare and Clonalis House, County Roscommon, in 1824. Denis O’Conor, known as The O’Conor Don, was
MP for Roscommon 1831-47; he had large estates in Roscommon and Sligo. He became a Treasury Lord
in 1846 and that year supported the repeal of the Corn Laws, although he had earlier voted against their
abolition.
There are family archives at Clonalis House, Castlerea, County Roscommon (according to the Oxford DNB
entry for Charles Owen O’Conor); the title O’Conor Don was a hereditary one of this branch of the ancient
O’Conor family (hence OCD in the letter).

A LETTER FROM CHARLES JAMES FOX TO HIS BROTHER GENERAL HENRY FOX, C. 1803,
Royal Hospital Kilmainham,August 12th 1803, following the rebellion attempt of July 1803.
The Irish Rebellion of 23rd July 1803 was an unsuccessful attempt by the United Irishmen led by Robert Emmet, Thomas Russell and James
Hope, to secure Ireland’s independence from the United Kingdom.
The plan was to attack and occupy a number of strategic positions around Dublin and wait for others to take up the cause and rebel also.
The most important target was Dublin Castle, for its symbolic position as the seat of the British Government in Ireland. The majority of the
fighting took place on Thomas Street where serious rioting broke out. On witnessing the brutality of some of the men who had risen up,
Emmet called off the rebellion. However, at this point he only had command over the original contingent of men who had joined. The
fighting continued while Emmet fled into hiding in Harold’s cross but was captured a month later on 25th August. He was tried for treason,
sentenced and executed by hanging at Thomas Street. A similar fate awaited Russell who was captured a few weeks later and killed in
October. Only Hope managed to avoid capture as he done following the 1798 rebellion. He fled north and secured employment with a
sympathetic friend from England.

he was too young to be a pupil when he edited ‘’The Fireside’’, but several relatives and his
brother Henry were former pupils and he knew that he would be going there in due course’.
Eliot continues her letter by remarking ‘Faber & Faber have advised me to protest at your quot-
ing from ‘’Poems Written in Early Youth’’ in your article in the ‘’Sewanee Review’’’ and explains

PEEL, ROBERT [ALEXANDER PRINGLE; DANIEL O’CONNELL; WILLIAM
COBBETT]
ALS about Irish Affairs & Reform Act
Handwritten letter dated Feb 13 1833 to Peel’s friend and Scottish politician Alexander Pringle
with unbroken red wax seal and stamped free frank. A six page letter written at Peel’s home in
Whitehall Gardens in which he conveys regret for Pringle’s absence from Parliament (Pringle lost
to a Whig/ liberal candidate in the general election of December 1832 held in the aftermath of
passing the Great Reform Act earlier that year) finding the ‘general appearance and demeanour of
the house most unsatisfactory’ as the ‘tenor of democratic influence was unchecked either by the
government or its supporters’. Lord Althorp’s speech comes in for particular ridicule - resembling
‘the overseer of a Parish meeting threatened with an indictment’ and Lord Ormelie comes in for
similar vitriol which Peel further heaps onto the as-yet unreformed House of Lords as he ‘justified
by his silly and impotent provocations all the fury of the Irish agitators [against Church of Ireland
reform]... such are the vapid vicissitudes of public feeling in unreformed houses’. All of which, says
Peel, ‘have given the utmost present satisfaction to O’Connell and his Crew’. Peel finishes with a
furious sideswipe at William Cobbett: ‘Old Cobbett is a regular twaddler, excepting when he is
making a personal attack upon the Whigs - in his species of warfare he seems very formidable...’

DOWNES
Autographed letter, signed,“Private Note - To
the Editor of the Literary Gazette,” dated at
Dunville, near Dublin, 2nd November, 1824
Quarto, three pages. Corner piece missing with loss
of one word.
An interesting letter regarding the publication of Rev.
Charles Wolfe’s poem ‘The Burial’, his only enduring
work which gained uncommon fame when it was first
published anonymously following the poet’s early
death in 1823. The poem suffered many spurious at-
tributions, and was extravagantly praised by Byron,
who declared it “the most perfect ode in the English
language.” In this letter Downes discusses the poem:
“Since forwarding my communication of yesterday I
have happened to meet with Mr. Taylor’s letter in the
Morning Chronicle of 29th Oct. relative to Mr. Wolfe’s
poem. I have no hesitation in saying that his emen-
dations are in two important instances more correct
than mine.”
George Downes, A.M., author, was born in South King
Street, Dublin about 1790. He was a man of great
and versatile genius exhibited chiefly in some shorter
pieces of poetry, and was an accomplished scholar in
the Norse languages. He was an intimate friend and
classmate of Wolfe’s at Trinity College, Dublin and
here, he writes the Literary Gazette in London to cor-
rect a reading of the poem he had submitted to the
publication from memory. He was the author of some
papers read before the Royal Irish Academy. His later
years were spent in Trinity College, employed upon
the cataloguing of the library. He died at Dalkey in
1846, and was buried at Ballitore, County Kildare.

THE FOLLOWING, LOTS 228 - 239 ARE FROM THE COLLECTION OF COMDT. GERALD O’CONNOR, 2ND WESTERN DIVISION,
NO. 2 BRIGADE, CASTLEREA.
Gerald O’Connor of Loughglynn, County Roscommon, served as the 1st Battalion Commandant and later as the No. 2 Brigade
Commandant in the 2nd Western Division. As part of his duties as Commandant, he took part in many military operations such as
the attempted attack on Castlerea Station Guard in July 1920 and the attack on the Frenchpark Barracks on 2nd October 1920. As
well as overseeing the day-to-day running of his Brigade in Roscommon. This collection of letters and documents provides unpar-
alleled detail into the structure and organisation of the Óglaigh na hÉireann, particularly in the year of 1922, in the aftermath of
the Anglo-Irish Treaty and lead up to the outbreak of the Irish Civil War (1922 - 1923). In a statement from General Headquarters,
Four Courts, Dublin and signed by Owen Duffy and Liam Lynch details the truce ordered for the cessation to the fighting in the
Four Courts between 4th May until 8th May 1922 (lot 238) . While in lot 239, we have a fascinating insight into the IRA General
Convention of May 1922, which was set up to decide the allegiance of the IRA to the newly formed Dáil Éireann. In a considerably
democratic fashion, ballot papers (Lot 233) were cast by each member of Óglaigh na hÉireann, by men of all ranks to exercise their
right in deciding the future of the organisation.
He gave the ‘Cease and Desist’ order on the lawn of Clonalis House, which had been occupied by the IRA, after the Treaty was
signed. He urged his men to not engage in fighting against their fellow Irishmen and to place their trust in the newly elected gov-
ernment to solve the issues facing the country. As a result of O’Connor’s words, many members of the South Roscommon Brigade
did not actively take part in the Civil War. He left military service and became a teacher in Meelick National School. O’Connor was
a meticulous in taking notes about the activities of the men volunteering in his division. These records were of vital importance
in 1930s and 40s, in order to help verify individual’s involvement in the order for them to qualify for a military pension. He was an
elected Fianna Fail representative for the Roscommon County Council from 1934 until 1942. He died in 1972 and is buried Lisacul
cemetery.

COMMANDANT GERALD O’CONNOR, 2ND WESTERN
DIVISION, NO.2 BRIGADE, CASTLEREA
The personal notebook of Comdt. Gerald O’Connor,
including interrogation and interviews with witnesses after the shooting of a woman
named Mrs Rogers in a local shop. The accused is listed by one witness to be Fran
McDonogh. There is also reference to a dispute between Toby Scally and Sean Ber-
gin, in which the latter has publicly accused Mr Scally and his family of ‘giving infor-
mation to the enemy of movements of enemy troops’. This is countered by a request
by Scally for an enquiry to be launched into the accusation and public investigation;
minutes from battalion meetings, etc.
Both men were later involved in the Loughglynn Ambush, April 19th 1921 in which
Sean Bergin, captain of the Castlerea Battalion was killed by British Troops along
with Stephen McDermott. Toby Scally was wounded but managed to escape while
a fourth man Joe Satchwell was taken to Athlone where he was brought before the
court and sentenced to 15 years penal servitude. He was released on general am-
nesty later that year.
Loughglynn Ambush
On April 19th, 1921 Roger McDermott left his home near Loughlynn wood, to tend
to his cattle. Upon leaving he spotted a large convoy of police and military combing
the woods and fields nearby. He returned to his house immediately and roused the
four IRA men who were in hiding, Sean Bergin, Toby Scally, Joe Satchwell and Ste-
phen McDermott.
As they made their hasty escape, the men armed themselves with shotguns, Webly
revolvers and a Lee Enfield rifle. Progress by the men was slow due to the fact that
Bergin had not fully recovered from his bout of pneumonia the year previously and
was still in a very weakened state. He pleaded with the others to leave him behind
and try and reach safety themselves but they refused.
As they headed towards the north side of the woods they were caught by the British
soldiers who opened fire. Scally was hit first through the leg and fell into a nearby
drain. The others headed for the bank of the river and began to return fire. They
hung on until all their ammunition was spent before finally surrendering. Bergin,
who was was captain of the Castlerea Battalion of South Roscommon, told the oth-
ers he would take responsibility for their actions as head of the party but the British
soldiers ignored this and showed little mercy to the men.
In the confusion, Scally who was presumed dead managed to get out of the drain
and make his way to Glynn house and then beyond to Moyne townland. Bergin,
Satchwell and McDermott were taken into custody, beaten and then court-mar-
tialled. Bergin and McDermott were sentenced to death. Satchwell was told my Cap-
tain McKay ‘You are being taken back to be shot on the square in Castlerea to make
an example of you’ (Michael O’Callaghan, For Ireland and Freedom: Roscommon
and the fight for Independence 1917-1921, Mercier Press, 2012, p. )
He was brought to an awaiting lorry while McDermott and Bergin were escorted into
the nearby woods and shot dead.
However, Satchwell was instead brought to Athlone where he was brought before
the court and sentenced to 15 years penal servitude. He was released on general
amnesty later that year.
The wounded Scally who had made his escape, was then met by Gerald O’Connor,
battalion commandant in Castlerea. O’Connor had been returning from a meeting
of Brigade staff in Rathconnor, Fourmilehouse, the evening before. He took Scally
to a nearby house in Cortoon where he was welcomed and received medical atten-
tion. Knowing that the area would be searched for Scally’s body, O’Connor had him
moved twice more before he was returned to his own home in Cloonaugh where he
remained until he fully recovered.

CAIRO GANG
Two ALS regarding the death of the Major Cholmeley Dowling (1891 - 1920), killed on Sunday 21st November 1920 at 28 Upper
Pembroke Street, Dublin. One from his sister Lillian to their Mother in London
Eight pages, and a second letter from a family friend Phyllis to his other sister Rene (Irene) in London, five pages on Shelbourne Hotel paper; together
with a photograph of Major Dowling, half length in uniform, 10 x 8cm
The ‘Cairo Gang’ was a group of British Intelligence agents who were stationed in Dublin during the Irish War of Independence. Their modus operandi
was to conduct surveillance and gather information on prominent figures within the IRA, with the express result, according to Irish intelligence, to
assassinate them. The origins of the synonymous name of the gang are somewhat disputed, some thinking it refers to a common history amongst it’s
members of serving in the Middle East, others that it was received due to the frequency with which the group met and held meetings at the Café Cairo,
on Grafton Street.
On the morning of November 21st 1920, a number of addresses around Dublin city were targeted by senior members of the IRA. The assassinations
were planned for the same day as the Gaelic football match between Dublin and Tipperary as the large crowds of spectators would make it easier for
the squad to move around the city undetected. The members of the Cairo Gang lived in boarding houses and hotels across the city, the location of
which was disclosed to Collins and his men through a source within Dublin Castle and a high-ranking police sergeant. Officers on Collins’ intelligence
staff had also been acting as double agents, meeting with members of the Cairo Gang, under the pretence of providing information about the IRA.
The first target was 28 Upper Pembroke Street, where Major Cholmeley was living. Squad members arrived at the house at 9:00am and were seen
jumping over the garden wall by Colonel Wilfrid Woodcock’s wife who did not initially think there was any reason to panic. However, when she saw him
remove a revolver from his pocket, she raised the alarm. As Lillian reports in her letter to her mother that Mrs Woodcock ‘had seen the man drop over
the garden wall with revolver, she screamed...and then she heard the shot.’
This ‘shot’ refers to the first round fired which killed Major Cholmeley and Captain Leonard Price. This moment is written in detail by Phyllis in her letter
to Rene. Affectionately referring to him as ‘Chum’ she recounts that ‘he was laughing and calling for his breakfast....when the men came up. There is a
thick stair carpet so they made no sound and they think that they did not call out or knock at the door but shot at Chum as he stood in the doorway,
clean through the heart’. Captain Leonard Price was another member of the Cairo Gang, also living in the house and he is remembered in Lillian’s letter
as a great friend of Cholmeley’s and when he was ‘at the Curragh, Price had said - I do miss my sweetheart...and he meant Chum’. Lillian and Phyllis both
visited Pembroke street and remarked how normal it seemed and upon entering Cholmeley and Price’s rooms finding ‘they are very quiet now - nothing
unusual but just the bullet marks in Chummy’s room, one in the ceiling and Captain Price’s in the side of the window sash.’
Three other men were shot, Captain Brian Christopher Headlam Keenlyside, Colonel Wilfrid Woodcock, and Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Montgomery.
Woodcock was not an intelligence agent, he happened upon a confrontation on the first floor of the house as he was preparing to leave to command
a regimental parade at army headquarters. Dressed in his military uniform he was shot twice in the shoulder and back but survived.
In Lillian’s letter to their mother, she and Phyllis have just returned from the hospital and goes to great lengths to stress how peaceful her brother was
‘looking as happy and perfect in death as he ever looked in life’. A sentiment which is repeated by Phyllis in her letter to Rene, who speaks quite frankly
that she was very frightened at the thought of seeing a dead body for the first time but ‘Chum was so glorious and so beautiful - that we was just carried
away from ordinary sorrow. He was smiling and looking so peaceful and happy that you had to know and believe he was alright. ‘
She goes on further to recount their visit to 28 Upper Pembroke Street where they collected Cholmeley’s clothes and personal belongings remarking
on two particular items, ‘at present the watch is running but I think it has been taken off and kept in a safe place but it is not certain. I have the chain’.
Major Cholmeley was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
