4. Condition
It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. Whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which
are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a
reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any
others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Please ensure that condition
report requests are submitted before 12 noon on Tuesday 13th April 2021 as we cannot guarantee that they will be dealt with after this time.
5. Absentee Bids
We are happy to execute absentee or written bids for bidders who are unable to bid online themselves and can also arrange for bidding to be

6. LOTS MADE OF / CONTAINING ANTIQUE IVORY AND/ OR CORAL
Bidders should be advised that importation regulations of several countries, including the US, prohibits the importation of ivory and that

coral to another country to familiarise themselves with the relevant importation regulations prior to bidding. Adams will not be responsi-
ble for shipping items herein and the onus will be on the buyer to organise shipping at their own behest.

www.adams.ie The Library Collection | 14th April 2021
This auction is automated and takes place solely online through our website
www.adams.ie
During the period of open bidding you will be able to see the current winning bid on each lot.
You may place a higher maximum bid of your choice and the bidding will automatically increase
by the next increment.
If your maximum bid is several increments higher than the current bid, the bidding will still only
increase by one increment until there is a competing bid in which case the system will move up
one increment higher in your favour. This process will continue until your maximum amount is
outbid.
**The system is designed to give the buyer the best chance of winning their desired lot at the most
competitive price, i.e. it will not jump to the maximum bid entered unless there is a competing bid
just below it**
EXAMPLE:
Bidder A leaves a maximum bid of €100, bidder B leaves a maximum bid of €200 on the same lot.
Bidder A is now knocked out of the lead and bidder B holds the current winning bid that auto
adjusts to €110 (NB not their maximum bid). The system auto adjusts the bid to the next winning
increment. User B’s bid will only be further executed if another user bids above their current bid
of €110 up to their maximum of €200, after which they will be knocked out and an e-mail issued
advising them to increase their bid.
Bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the current winning bidder, or if they have
been outbid by another competing bidder. If you have been outbid and the auction is still open,
you are free to leave a higher bid.
At the end of the defined bidding period, 11am on Wednesday 2nd December, if the highest bid
offered meets the minimum price designated by the Auctioneer (i.e. the seller’s reserve price),
the lot is sold.
In a timed auction, the closing time is staggered, with bidding for lot 1 ending at 11am and each
subsequent lot closing one minute after the previous. If there is a flurry of bidding on a lot just
as it reaches its closing time, the lot is kept open for an extended period to enable everybody to
fairly get their bids in.
All winning bidders will be notified by email once the auction has fully ended.

James Malton is thought to have lived in Dublin during the 1780s with his father Thomas Malton, an architectural draughtsman
and teacher. According to the Publius source he was apprenticed to James Gandon, the famous architect, at the age of 17 in
1781. Malton’s apprenticeship to Gandon was terminated after three years by mutual consent, after which he moved to London,
working from there with frequent visits back to Dublin. Malton engaged on his grand project to produce his ‘’Picturesque Views
of Dublin’’, on a scale hitherto unknown even in London. Dublin pre-Act of Union in 1800 was of course an incredibly rich and
vibrant city at the zenith of its financial and cultural powers, and so to Malton it must have appeared ripe for acceptance of such
a publication to celebrate its status as the city second only to London. The book was published in six parts by subscription, as
was the custom starting in 1792. The painting itself was carried out in London The book proved in part to be too great an un-
dertaking for Malton, and he could not have foreseen the exodus which took place in the city after the Act of Union in 1800. He
died in 1803 in London at the age of 38 of a brain fever, and undoubtedly did not reap the rewards of his endeavour.
James Malton (1761-1803) undertook his Views of Dublin project in the 1780s and began to publish his set of twenty-five prints
in 1792. Completed as an architecturally accurate depiction of Dublin, these prints served as a visual record for the city. The
prints enlightened those living in the latter part of the 18th century as to the nature of Dublin and, to this day, they have main-
tained their importance as a captivating illustration of the city as it was.
In 1796, St. Stephens Green, Dublin was published, providing a view stretching from the North West corner of the park, near
what is now the Grafton Street entrance, towards Leeson Street. This idyllic and civilised portrayal of urban park life acts in direct
juxtaposition to the areas previous history.
The area of St. Stephens Green was so called on account of St. Stephens Church and its accompanying leper house that was
founded in the vicinity c.1192. Until 1664, the Green itself consisted of a swampy stretch of land in which the locals could graze
their livestock in between public executions and witch burnings.
In order to reform this part of Dublin, an area of 27 acres was bordered off by lime trees with the surrounding plots of land being
subject to housing development. Only those inhabiting these plots were granted access to the Green.
During the next century, the Stephens Green area rose in popularity as the opening of Grafton Street (1708) and Dawson
Street (1723) piqued the interest of fashionable individuals. As such, the park soon became a promenade of high society, with
particular devotion being given to the Beaux Walk which ran along its northern edge. It is here that Malton has set his scene,
portraying Dublin society at leisure. As ladies and gentleman pause for idle chatter, the viewer is encompassed by the lazy hum
of their surroundings, whilst a pointing figure on the right directs our eye across the expanse of green, over a statue of George
III by John van Nost and out to the city beyond. Rising in unison, these buildings are a stark reminder of Georgian solidarity and
represent the building standards that were put on the Greens surrounding plots of land.
With the passing of an Act of Parliament in 1814, we see St. Stephens Green warping slightly from Maltons depiction. Where
once people could walk their dogs, these animals were now banned, along with such acts as running and jumping and any
other exertion that might harm the land and the plants on it.
This is all changed when, in 1880, Lord Ardilaun officially opened St. Stephens Green to the general public. In 1884, he handed
possession of the Green over to the Dublin Corporation to hold on behalf of the people. From here, the Green, now under the
control of the OPW, has progressed into the area that we know today.
Over two hundred years after Malton committed his 18th century park to paper, the Green still holds a resemblance to its past.
Whilst certain changes cannot be denied, for example the destruction of van Nosts statue which once stood proudly in the cen-
tre, or the extensive growth of the lime trees bordering the walks, the similarities remain. Visitors to Dublin continue to enjoy the
Beaux Walk and, with a change of costume, Malton’s scene would appear quite at home in the 21st century city.

Sir John Fowler was a British engineer, born on July 15th 1817 in Wadsley, a
town near Sheffield, England. Fowler established his career in London as a
civil engineer where he worked on a variety of projects, such as the extension
of the Metropolitan Railway, which later became the London Underground,
the world’s first subway system. Fowler continued working on several notable
projects in the capital, including the construction of Victoria Station between
1866-67, but perhaps his greatest achievement was designing and overseeing
construction of the great cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth from 1882
to 1890, together with his partner Benjamin Baker. Firth of Forth was one of
the first cantilever bridges and was the world’s longest span for several years
after its construction. Fowler was made a baronet in 1890. He died in 1898.

The ‘Cup and Ball’ Game
Oil on canvas, 64 x 41cm
Signed and dated 1882
Provenance: Private Collection, Dublin.
€ 8,000 - 12,000
Born in Sussex in 1829 the son of surgeon William Thomas Coleman and his wife Henrietta Dendy, his
elder sister was artist Helen Cordelia Coleman (1847–1884).
Coleman was unsuccessful in a career as a surgeon and turned to natural history illustration. He painted
mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with watercolourist Miles Birket
Foster, and concentrated on semi-classical figure subjects. His classically-influenced works placed him
in the toga and terrace or marble school with artists George Bulleid, W. Anstey Dollond, Norman Pres-
cott-Davies and Oliver Rhys.
Coleman was a versatile artist, executing etchings, occasionally working in pastel, but primarily painting
exquisitely in oil. He was a member of the original committee of management of the Dudley Gallery in
London, contributing to the first exhibition in 1865. He continued to exhibit till 1879, and remained on the
committee till 1881.
In 1869 Coleman began to experiment in pottery and porcelain decoration. The Mintons Art Pottery
Studio in Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for
Mintons ceramic ware. He died after a long illness at 11 Hamilton Gardens, St. John’s Wood, on 22 March
1904.

JOHN BUTTS (c.1728 - 1764)
A Mountainous Wooded Landscape with figures gathering wood
Oil on canvas, 94.5 x 128cm
Provenance: Sotheby’s, London, 6 July 1983, lot 250
Exhibited: Dublin, Exhibition Palace, Arts, Industries and Manufactures (and Loan Museum of Works of Art),
1872.
€ 15,000 - 20,000
As one of the finest early Irish landscape painters, John Butts specialised in extensive woodland scenes, often based on his native county
of Cork around the margins of the Blackwater river. His idealised and romanticised views reflect a particular stylistic tradition of landscape
painting, greatly influenced by French 17th century artists’ such as Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin.
Works by Butts are considerably scarce and large-scale landscape scenes, such as the present example are particularly important additions to
the artist’s known oeuvre. The early years of his career were spent in Cork, studying and painting from the environment around him, in which
he was praised for his remarkable ability to render the breadth and variety of light and shadow in his compositions. While highly idealised
views of the wild local environment, Butts handling of colour and the creation of distinctive atmospheric qualities established him as an artist
of merit.
In this work he captures the toil and hardship of the men at work, gathering large branches for building and fire wood, while the figure in the
distant foreground, returning to the town, is bent over under the weight of his load. The centre of the composition is beautifully lit, the rocky
cliff face bathed in the warm glow of the sun. Butts manages to create both a focused narrative in the foreground of the painting, while also
alluding to the vast and expansive landscape and mountains in the distance. The sun breaks through the clouds, hitting the canopy of the
forest and casting a dappled light over the entire scene.
Little is known about his painting career, other than a move to Dublin in around 1757, where he was employed as scene painter for the Crow
Street Theatre. Married and with a large family to provide for, Butts took on commissions for landscape and figurative paintings in order
to supplement his income. Dogged by is penchant for alcohol, he struggled to maintain consistency in his work and this kept him and his
family in near state of poverty. He resorted to selling ale house scenes, noted as ‘grotesque assemblages’ in Strickland, or painting signs for
businesses and coaches.
While his reputation is not as significant as other Irish landscape painters such as George Barrett or James Barry, the latter of which was a close
friend and contemporary of Butts, the emergence of more works by him will help to establish his legacy as a key figure of 18th century Irish art.

John Whaley was the younger brother of the infamous adventurer, Thomas “Buck”
Whaley. Their father, Richard Chapell Whaley, known as “Burn-Chapel Whaley” for his
anti-Catholic views, was a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell. He married their moth-
er Anne Ward, daughter of the Reverend Bernard Ward, in 1759. Anne was then only
eighteen, whilst her husband was already advanced in years. She bore seven children
during the following nine years. Richard Chapell Whaley began to build number 86 St.
Stephen’s Green circa 1765, but did not live to see it finished before his death in 1769.
The Whaleys’ eldest son, also Richard, died as a youngster and a large part of the fam-
ily estates passed to Thomas, as eldest surviving son, on his father’s death. Thomas
“Buck” or “Jerusalem” Whaley, as he came to be known, was educated in Ireland until
his 16th birthday when his mother sent him to France in an attempt to curb his way-
ward behaviour. A stint in Paris only served to encourage his recklessness and in 1788
Buck famously wagered with the Duke of Leinster that he could travel to Jerusalem and
back within a year. Having completed the arduous journey, he collected £15,000 from
the Duke on his return. The story of Buck’s short and fast life is filled with anecdotes
of similar outlandish behaviour and is well documented elsewhere. He died at the age
of 33 at a Cheshire Inn, on route to London, having been reputedly stabbed by a lover
whose sister had also caught his eye.
The last member of the Whaley family to live at 86 St. Stephen’s Green was John Whaley,
former owner of the present painting. John married first Lady Anne Meade, daughter
of the Earl of Clanwilliam; and second, Mary Anne, daughter of John Richardson. As ex-
ecutrix, the latter engaged John Littleton, auctioneer, to sell “The Cabinet and Gallery
Pictures, the Property of the Late John Whaley Esq., containing the most celebrated and
valuable gems of that distinguished collection, embracing the purest specimens of the
most esteemed ancient and modern artists, the whole of which will be sold by auction
in the mansion house no. 86 St. Stephen’s Green South on Thursday and Friday the
21st and 22nd June 1849”.
The impressive catalogue included works attributed to Titian, Veronese, Rembrandt,
Bellini, Rubens and Guido Reni, with a total of 132 pictures listed.
