Jane McDonnell and Sarah McDonnell are founders of Gloss Publications,
a Dublin-based boutique publishing and events company and creative agency. Flagship
title THE GLOSS Magazine, with its mix of fashion, features, interiors and culture,
combines fresh contemporary design and distinctive editorial content aimed at the Irish
market, but with an international outlook.THE GLOSS is published with The Irish
Times on the first Thursday of every month, with the exception of March and Septem-
ber issues, published with The Irish Times on the first Saturday of the month. THE
GLOSS Interiors, with is also published in March and September. GPL publishes client
magazines, devises clever ideas for events and produces glossy books for the coffee table.
Its founders share with their readers a love of good design and little luxuries, including
trawling auction houses for interesting finds, and wonderful antique and contemporary
jewellery.
SARAH’s favourite:
Lot 55: I just adore this aquamarine cocktail ring, its shape and sparkle. Even though it’s a grand piece, its colour, my favourite
light blue, and delicate diamond setting make it seem light and feminine.
Lot 32:These antique diamond and rubyVan Cleef & Arpels cufflinks are divine. I’d like them for myself, to wear with a white
shirt, though they could look wonderful on the right man!
Lots 96 & 25:This antique diamond ring and antique pearl earrings with diamond surrounds could be purchased as a little set.
Worn casually every day, they would look like family pieces.
Lot 14:These littleVictorian brooches are just gorgeous, pretty on a jacket or even in your hair for a formal event. The brooch is
back in vogue, for all ages, and makes a really lovely gift.
Lot 100:This design of thisTiffany & Co gold cuff means it is supple enough to sit beautifully at the wrist. I’d wear this bold piece
with a sweater and jeans, rather than with eveningwear.
They both loved...
Lot 81:We both were drawn to this diamond bracelet: modern yet classic which won’t go out of fashion. The trick is to wear this
with something sleek and unfussy.
Lot: 193: Ditto for this unusual diamond ring with its intertwined leaf design. The raised setting means it really catches the light
and has a wonderful sparkle. And delicate diamond teardrop earrings have a place in every jewellery box. These are so pretty and
wearable.

JANE’s favourite:
Lot 69:This trio of modern bangles really appeals. The bangles are oblong, therefore much more comfortable and
practical to wear than round, and have a clean, contemporary look.
Lot 35: It’s rare to see a great long gold chain necklace like this. This one is particularly smart and would look
great with a simple wool dress.
Lot 82: I’m drawn to the colour and size of this smoky quartz in its simple setting, which allows the stone to be
the star of the ring. The colour is dark and dramatic, and works with a winter wardrobe.
Lot 56:This wide gold Cartier band has a modern architectural quality and makes quite a statement. Cartier is
known for its timeless approach to design: this ring will endure.
Lot 94:ThoseTiny gold hoops by Cartier are jewellery classics and adding small diamond clusters only makes
them more covetable.A great everyday pair, with a touch of the heirloom about them.

even greater success.
Despite the crises of the 1930’s and the SecondWorldWar, the company continued to grow, and opened branches
in other Swiss cities and tourist destinations. In 1977, the third generation of family entrepreneurs took on the
management of the flourishing company. Under the direction of Jörg G. Bucherer it expanded into Austria in the

diamond accent, mounted in 18K gold, signed Sterlé Paris, numbered, maker’s mark,French assay mark,
length 8.5cm
€ 3,500 - 4,500
Pierre Sterléwas famed for his innovative approach to jewellery design using baguette-cut diamonds and co-
loured gemstones in sweeping, curling lines. He created pieces that were considered revolutionary by his contemporaries
for their creative originality and superior technical expertise. His designs embodied the dynamics of 1950s design and were
wrought with great movement and energy.
Son of a family of bankers, Sterlé was sent to live with his uncle, a jeweller in Paris, after the death of his father during the
FirstWorldWar. In 1934 he founded his own establishment and was supported by many large jewellery houses, such as
Boucheron and Chaumet, for whom he was already designing jewellery. Sterlé quickly acquired both international renown
and a clientele who enjoyed the exclusive nature and originality of his style. In 1945 Sterlé opened a third floor boutique at
43Avenue de l’Opera, near the PlaceVendôme, in a bid to distance himself from the general public at ground level. Herein-
to, the designer greeted and entertained leading fashion and society women of the day in an elite atmosphere.
His reputation was cemented when he won the De Beers Diamond Award, a major achievement in the jewellery profession,
for 3 consecutive years 1953, 1954 and 1955.Aside from the sheer beauty and grace of Sterlé's work, his greatest contribu-
tion to the jewellery industry was the invention of a gold plaiting technique calledTil d'ange.
The style of Pierre Sterlé is characterised by its inspirational designs, artistic treatment and technical mastery. His recurring
themes derived from nature, such as birds, wings, feathers, animals and various types of flowers, feature asymmetry and a
type of baroque extravagance, contrasted with geometric forms and opulent arabesques, observed in the traditional jewel-
lery of the era. Sterlé managed "to manipulate metal like no other before him".The technique used on the metal suggests
dripping, freezing or etching, resulting in braided, twisted and flexible ropes of gold.
Despite coming from a family of financiers, Sterlé was a poor businessman, his perfumes and boutique were financial disas-
ters, leading to the liquidation of his company in 1976. During the final years of his life, he became a technical consultant at
Chaumet. However, thirty years after his death, the items created by him continue to have a strong following at auction.

FANCY-COLOURED DIAMONDS
Diamonds that come in colours beyond the normal colour range of D to Z, are known as Fancy-Coloured Diamonds. They
can come in colours such as deep yellows and browns, as well as pinks, oranges, blues and greens.
Tiffany’s famous yellow diamond,‘TheTiffany’ a cushion-shaped CanaryYellow diamond, has firmly planted the desire
for this wonderful yellow hue to grace our fingers or necklines.Yellow diamond engagement rings sported by Hollywood
stars, such as Olivia Palermo, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and JessicaAlba prove that our adoration of yellow diamonds is
steadfast.
However, this love affair with yellow diamonds is nothing new, there is a long history of extraordinary yellow diamonds
that gained fame, both as exquisite examples of the beautiful nature of diamonds, and because of the famous people who
wore, bought and sold them. Some examples of notable yellow diamonds are The Allnatt (cushion-cut diamond, FancyVivid
Yellow 102.29ct), The Florentine (irregular nine-sided shape, LightYellow, 139ct),The Incomparable (shield- shaped step-cut,
Fancy BrownishYellow, 407.48ct)The Mouna (cushion-cut diamond, IntenseYellow, 112.53ct),The Porges (Asscher-cut,
Yellow, 78.53ct) and The Red Cross (cushion-cut, CanaryYellow, 205.07ct).
Fancy coloured diamonds are far more rare than diamonds in the normal colour range.A diamond, particularly a yellow
one - that shows colour that’s deeper or more intense or vivid than a Z colour stone moves it from the ranks of normal
coloured diamonds to the realm of fancy-coloured diamonds. Rarity has a profound impact on diamond value.

Chaumet was founded in 1780 by Marie-Etienne Nitot, with an establishment at the heart of placeVendôme. His creativity and quality of
workmanship, led him to become one of the most sought-after jewellers in Europe and thus establish a loyal and prestigious clientele.
The history of Chaumet has been entwined with the History of France, with Nitot and his son, Francois Regnault Nitot becoming the official
jeweller to Napoleon during the Consulate and the Empire. Napoleon’s marriage to Joséphine, then to Marie-Louise of Habsburg-Lorraine,
Queen Marie-Antoinette’s great-niece, resulted in some impressive commissions for Chaumet.
Following the fall of the Empire, Nitot’s successors Jean-Baptiste Fossin and his son, Jules, dedicated themselves to romantic jewellery inspired
by the decorative arts of the Italian Renaissance and of the French 17th-century.
In 1848, Jules Fossin set up a London branch in partnership with J.V., Morel, assisted by his son Prosper. On his return to Paris in 1954,
Prosper Morel joined Jules Fossin whom he succeeded in 1868. Prosper Morel’s daughter married Joseph Chaumet in 1875.With exceptional
creativity and inspired by the re-enchantment of nature, Joseph Chaumet came to be recognised as an undisputed master of the Belle Époque.
In 1889, Chaumet took over the company and gave his name to the House.
In the 1920’s Chaumet’s jewellery styles became more geometric in line, following art deco style, characterised by strong contrasts in colours
and materials, the use of semi-precious stones, black and white, as well as exotic inspirations. The 1930’s saw Chaumet becoming more femi-
nine, continuing its style while exploring a certain modernity that echoed fine Parisian taste, ever in search of novelty and the avant-garde. In
1970, gold jewellery, sometimes set with hardstone, bronze or mother-of-pearl, was on offer in a new boutique concept.
Chaumet’s legacy of bucolic beauty is a deep well of inspiration that bridges past and present designs.Today, the bees share Chaumet’s gar-
den-inspired Jardin’s Collection with the spider, weaving its perilous web, playing their game of amorous hide-and-seek.The‘Hortensia’ col-
lections invite us into a delicate garden filled with vibrant colour, the‘Bee my love’ collection, including the diamond bee and the honeycomb
motif, celebrate an imperial pledge of love and the‘Attrape Moi’ collection once again highlights the bee.
For more than 230 years Chaumet’s excellence in high Jewellery has been passed down through generations of jewellers. Diamonds and
precious stones, carefully selected for their exceptional clarity and brilliance, are sculpted into round, cushion, oval, emerald or the House’s
signature pear-shaped cut, and then the jewellers, stone setters, polishers and engravers give life to the jewels, exhibited in magnificent pieces
of jewellery.

Poiray was founded in Paris in 1975, with an establishment in PlaceVendôme, and from its inception was recognised for its bold choic-
es. Poiray changed the codes of traditional jewellery with pieces that are refined with a strong character masked by an elegant reserve.
Jackie Kennedy is the iconic inspiration for creative directorAurélie Bidermann’s new collection.
Poiray style is characterised by full and generous shapes and pure lines. The hearts, braids, gems, gadroons, filigree motifs and art-deco
inspiration are strong themes which continue to dominate the collections and show the spirit of Poiray.
Seaman Schepps rose to prominence in the 1930’s with jewellery designs that challenged the status quo, and defined a new style
for theAmerican woman. Schepps’ jewellery embodied style and originality, and was featured on the covers ofVogue, Harper’s Bazaar,
Look and other magazines. It appealed to a myriad of clients from Katherine Hepburn toAndyWarhol to the Duchess ofWindsor, and
greatly influenced his contemporaries.
After Schepps’ death in 1972, Patricia ScheppsVaill continued to make jewellery in her father’s style, often using elements from pieces
he had designed.Vaill developed a new look in jewellery aimed at appealing to a younger clientele. After twenty years at the helm of her
father’s company,Vaill retired and passed the baton to Jay Bauer and Anthony Hopenhajm who have continued to produce jewellery in the
unique Schepps style.
Today’s designs draw on the Schepps archives which contain over 5,000 detailed jewellery renderings, and 650 moulds. The pieces created
in the workshop continue to be made with cutting-edge methods and inventive, unusual materials. Classic pieces are rendered in new
materials and signature materials are used for bold new styles.
The flagship store on Park Avenue at 58th Street continues to attract socialites, movie stars, royalty and trend-setters who are drawn to
Schepps’ innovative use of exotic materials.Today, some 50 years after his death, he continues to inspire modern jewellers.

The Submariner...
In 1953, the French Navy diver Jacques Costeau sparked worldwide interest in diving and underwater exploration,
through his book‘The SilentWorld’and the subsequent award-winning film.On foot of this curiosity,Rolex created
‘The Submariner’, a classic sports wristwatch, designed for diving and renowned for its resistance to water and
corrosion. The first Submariner was introduced to the public in 1954 at the BaselWatch Fair.
October 1962 saw James Bond, played by Sean Connery, make his cinema debut wearing a Submariner and the
watch was immortalised. The reliable and rugged dive watch, fast embodied suave masculinity and adventure.
Although it is rarity that makes this Rolex particularly special, with the subtly unique ‘exclamation point’ dial,
(6 o’clock position), original aluminium bezel insert and lack of crown guards (all Subs post-5508 feature crown
guards).
Rolex introduced reference 5513 in 1962 and produced the reference until the mid-1980's. It is identifiable by its
lack of date feature, allowing for a well-balanced dial design. Early 5513’s featured a glossy black dial with gilt
text, and in the mid-1960's, Rolex started producing the reference with a matte dial and white printing. These dials
featured the depth rating with meters indicated first "200m=660ft", and towards the end of the 1960's, Rolex be-
gan producing dials with the depth rating that indicated feet first. The matte dial reference 5513 appeals to vintage
Rolex enthusiasts for it's dial symmetry, durability, and place in Rolex history as inspiration for future Submariner
models.

MAMMOTHS
Woolly mammoths are thought to have first appeared on the earth 4.8 million years
ago and finally become extinct at least 3,600 years ago. There may be as many as 150
million dead mammoths frozen beneath the permafrost in Russia and the resulting
melts of global warming is making their retrieval easier.
Mammoth mining is serious business in Siberia, every year 60 M tones of mammoth
ivory is shipped to China, the world’s largest ivory market. Mammoth ivory can
command a much higher price than elephant ivory and sells for as much as £330 per
kilogram
Mammoth ivory is now being seen as an ecological and ethical alternative to elephant
ivory, as mammoths are not illegally poached and are not decreasing the numbers of
a living species. This trade could reduce demand for elephant ivory and thus reduce
poaching of theAfrican Elephant. However, there is a fear that if mammoth ivory
entersAfrica it could provide an easy disguise for poached elephant ivory.
