African American freedom struggle from the 1890s to the early 2000s, including the different
approaches, organizations, movements, strategies, tactics, or individual actions that have been
used over the course of the 20th century and into the 21st.
Part 1 (approximately 2-3 pages):
1. Discuss the extent to which there has been progress in African Americans’ pursuit of the
full and equal citizenship rights that were supposedly guaranteed by the 13th, 14th, and
15th Amendments to the US Constitution.
2. Discuss several of the leaders, organizations, movements, or approaches to civil rights
activism that you think were most important or effective in achieving that progress, and
explain why you think that is the case.
3. While explaining clearly why you think particular individuals or approaches were
important or effective, make sure you refer to specific details and examples from the
readings, films, lectures, and discussions.
Part 2 (approximately 2-3 pages):
1. Discuss the areas in which you believe African Americans’ pursuit of full and equal

The system uses four inputs - black voting population size, how liberal the state is, and whether it is a candidate's home state. Criminal Justice Component in America
The United States criminal justice system is subdivided into three branches that all correlate. The first component is the law enforcement system (Hall, 2004). Under this component, there are individual’s assigned jurisdictions such as sheriffs and their deputies and even patrol officers. Federal agents, game and parks rangers, detectives and other individuals that usually make the first contact with criminals are also inclusive in this bracket of peacekeepers. Basically, at this point, the justice system mainly contains those that make the first contact with criminals. These persons major responsibility is to uphold the law by apprehending those committing a particular crime (Lofstrom, & Raphael, 2016). It is not their responsibility to prosecute or charge anyone with any allegations their particular job is to arrest and submit to courts. Law enforcement individuals must be knowledgeable of the individual rights of suspected offenders such as Miranda rights, search and seizure rights and reasonable stops to name a few. Officers also need to be aware of citizens' and civil rights so as not to violate those rights or compromise an investigation if a crime was indeed committed. These are important things as they would even lead to the jeopardy of a case or cases filed against a criminal officer or would lead to the civil rights society having problems with the officers. If for example, an officer had no search warrant that allows him or her to search a particular premise but goes ahead with the activity, the would raise queries against his or her eligibility. In cases where forensics are needed also an officer might end up interfering with evidence of a whole case even if the crime was genuinely committed.
The second and the most key component of these justice systems is the court (Hall, 2004). The first component which includes patrol police and the sheriffs are all submissive to the courts. Some of the key role players in this component include judges, attorneys, magistrates, lawyers and the jury. Many of these positions being elective, such as the district attorney and the judges. Defense attorneys are generally private practice attorneys who specialize in certain areas of the law, such as family law or drug law, and are hired by a defendant. Public defenders are defense attorneys who are appointed to individuals who cannot afford an attorney (Lofstrom, & Raphael, 2016). Monitoring of the Last US Presidential Elections
This paper presents the results of a new monitoring project of the US presidential elections with the aim of establishing computer-based tools to track in real time the popularity or awareness of candidates. The designed and developed innovative methods allow us to extract the frequency of queries sent to numerous search engines by US Internet users. Based on these data, this paper demonstrates that Trump was more frequently searched than the Democratic candidates, either Hillary Clinton in 2016 or Joe Biden in 2020. When analyzing the topics, it is observed that in 2020 the US users had shown a remarkable interest in two subjects, namely, Coronavirus and Jobs (unemployment). Interest for other topics such as Education or Healthcare were less pronounced while issues such as Immigration were given even less attention by users. Finally, some “flame” topics such as Black Lives Matter (2020) and Gun Control (2016) appear to be very popular for a few weeks before returning to a low level of interest. When analyzing tweets sent by candidates during the 2020 campaign, one can observe that Trump was focused mainly on Jobs and on Riots, announcing what would happen if Democrats took power. To these negative ads, Biden answered by putting forward moral values (e.g., love, honesty) and political symbols (e.g., democracy, rights) and by underlying the failure of the current administration in resolving the pandemic situation.

Monitoring of the Last US Presidential Elections
This paper presents the results of a new monitoring project of the US presidential elections with the aim of establishing computer-based tools to track in real time the popularity or awareness of candidates. The designed and developed innovative methods allow us to extract the frequency of queries sent to numerous search engines by US Internet users. Based on these data, this paper demonstrates that Trump was more frequently searched than the Democratic candidates, either Hillary Clinton in 2016 or Joe Biden in 2020. When analyzing the topics, it is observed that in 2020 the US users had shown a remarkable interest in two subjects, namely, Coronavirus and Jobs (unemployment). Interest for other topics such as Education or Healthcare were less pronounced while issues such as Immigration were given even less attention by users. Finally, some “flame” topics such as Black Lives Matter (2020) and Gun Control (2016) appear to be very popular for a few weeks before returning to a low level of interest. When analyzing tweets sent by candidates during the 2020 campaign, one can observe that Trump was focused mainly on Jobs and on Riots, announcing what would happen if Democrats took power. To these negative ads, Biden answered by putting forward moral values (e.g., love, honesty) and political symbols (e.g., democracy, rights) and by underlying the failure of the current administration in resolving the pandemic situation.

It found that Trump received more negative coverage (67%) than Kasich (52%), supporting the hypothesis that the media has a pro-establishment bias. These resources have made possible a variety of secondary analyses, often utilizing the data in ways never anticipated by their creators. Traditionally, secondary data analysis involves the use of an available data resource by researchers to study a problem different from the one treated in the original analysis. For example, a researcher might have conducted a survey of workers' reactions to technological change and analyzed those data to evaluate whether the workers welcomed or resisted such change in the workplace. As a matter of secondary interest, the researcher collects data on workers' perceptions of the internal labor-market structures of their firms. She then lends those data to a colleague who studies the determinants of (workers' perceptions of) job-ladder length and complexity in order to understand workers' views on prospects for upward mobility in their places of employment. The latter investigation is a secondary analysis.
More recently, however, the definition of a secondary analysis has expanded as more data sets have been explicitly constructed with multiple purposes and multiple users in mind. The creators, or principal investigators, exercise control over the content of a data set but are responsive to a variety of constituencies that are likely to use that resource. The creators may undertake analyses of the data, addressing questions of intellectual interest to themselves while simultaneously releasing the data to the public or depositing the data resource in an archive. Data archives are depositories where data produced by a number of investigators are available for secondary analyses. The data bank generally takes responsibility for providing documentation on the data sets and other information needed for their use. The term also refers more generally to any source of data already produce.

A. Justification
At the time of their founding, Latin American countries drew inspiration from
the United States and its system of government based on democratically elected
presidents subject to checks and balances from independent and co-equal branches of
government. Yet democracy proved to be little more than an aspiration during most
of the region’s independent history with countries fluctuating repeatedly, often in
quick succession, from popularly elected leaders to dictatorships. Democracy failed to
take root in even the wealthiest and most industrialized countries in the region as
exemplified by repressive military dictatorships that ruled the Southern Cone during
the 1970s.
However, starting in the late 1970s and gathering momentum during the
1980s, Latin American dictatorships were replaced by popularly elected
governments. This time really did prove different. Despite setbacks and persistent
(and often well-justified) concerns about tangible results of democracy (its
deliverables), today all but two Latin American countries qualify as functioning (if
somewhat flawed) democracies.
Democracy is, for now, to quote Linz and Stepan (1996, 15), “the only game in
town” in Latin America. With that problem resolved, social scientists have turned
their attention to a new problem: the quality of said democracies:
How far are today’s democratically elected governments from what was
promised to the electorate prior to transition?
Specifically, what are the main strengths and weaknesses of each of the
region’s democracies?
You will tackle these questions by conducting an audit of the quality of
democracy in a Latin American country of your choosing. This assignment combined
with class lectures on the larger political trends in the region’s recent history, will
provide you with a more detailed and nuanced picture of Latin American Politics.
B. Assignment
1) You are to research and write a policy memo evaluating the state of democracy Argentina. The memo should
be about 2,500 words or 10 pages long (double-spaced).
2) Begin by understanding the concept of democratic quality and the ways in which
it can assessed. Quality of democracy in the country you select should be assessed
following the framework developed by Levine and Molina (2011). Said framework
evaluates the quality of a country’s democracy based on five criteria:

However, their routes were not highly valued compared to their expressions, especially during their times. These two communities had the capability of offering their shared predicament comprehensibly in public. Linking with the article on Mercantilists, Colonialists, and Laborers, the dilemma of these communities living through the claimed the separation for the East-West separation and linked binaries. The article also concentrates on the global history of Japanese immigrants and the procedure of creating the racial process. One of the first examples of applying statistical analysis in the social sciences comes from W.E.B. Du Bois, a renowned African American scholar and civil rights activist. In 1899, he published The Philadelphia Negro, a groundbreaking study of the population of the 7th ward of Philadelphia. Du Bois relied on survey data he collected himself from 5000 residents. By relying on quantitative analyses, Du Bois was able to provide evidence that prevalent, contemporary discriminatory policies along with unequal opportunity created and perpetuated poverty and low socio-economic status. This research challenged the racist views held by many white Philadelphians at the time that African Americans were somehow inferior.
Using survey data based on sound research design allows scholar-practitioners to compute frequencies and percentages in order to explore social problems and potentially reshape how people define problems in ways that can effect positive social change.

Homeland Security efforts are ably reinforced by Homeland Defense and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA), which are missions executed by the Department of Defense (DOD), most specifically by the Combatant Command, United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). In supporting the nation when requested by DHS, FEMA, or other lead federal agencies, or as directed by the president or the secretary of defense, DOD provides many unique capabilities for crisis response. One specific function used most notably during the post-Hurricane Katrina period was the use of airborne assets to provide damage assessments and to gauge the extent of the sea surge at various times during the recovery.
The function of deploying such assets is traditionally called
intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance
(ISR). Yet the U.S. military cannot legally collect intelligence on U.S. citizens. Consequently, the action, as performed during the hurricane recovery operations described here, is known as
incident awareness and assessments
(IAA). For some, the difference between these terms is merely semantics; for many, IAA differs both symbolically and practically from ISR, if not in how information is collected, then in how it is used and the motivation behind the collection. The creation and growth of publicly accessible data archives (or data banks) have revolutionizedPage 2474 | Top of Articlethe way sociologists conduct research. These resources have made possible a variety of secondary analyses, often utilizing the data in ways never anticipated by their creators. Traditionally, secondary data analysis involves the use of an available data resource by researchers to study a problem different from the one treated in the original analysis. For example, a researcher might have conducted a survey of workers' reactions to technological change and analyzed those data to evaluate whether the workers welcomed or resisted such change in the workplace. As a matter of secondary interest, the researcher collects data on workers' perceptions of the internal labor-market structures of their firms. She then lends those data to a colleague who studies the determinants of (workers' perceptions of) job-ladder length and complexity in order to understand workers' views on prospects for upward mobility in their places of employment. The latter investigation is a secondary analysis.
More recently, however, the definition of a secondary analysis has expanded as more data sets have been explicitly constructed with multiple purposes and multiple users in mind. The creators, or principal investigators, exercise control over the content of a data set but are responsive to a variety of constituencies that are likely to use that resource. The creators may undertake analyses of the data, addressing questions of intellectual interest to themselves while simultaneously releasing the data to the public or depositing the data resource in an archive. Data archives are depositories where data produced by a number of investigators are available for secondary analyses. The data bank generally takes responsibility for providing documentation on the data sets and other information needed for their use. The term also refers more generally to any source of data already produce.

A. Justification
At the time of their founding, Latin American countries drew inspiration from
the United States and its system of government based on democratically elected
presidents subject to checks and balances from independent and co-equal branches of
government. Yet democracy proved to be little more than an aspiration during most
of the region’s independent history with countries fluctuating repeatedly, often in
quick succession, from popularly elected leaders to dictatorships. Democracy failed to
take root in even the wealthiest and most industrialized countries in the region as
exemplified by repressive military dictatorships that ruled the Southern Cone during
the 1970s.
However, starting in the late 1970s and gathering momentum during the
1980s, Latin American dictatorships were replaced by popularly elected
governments. This time really did prove different. Despite setbacks and persistent
(and often well-justified) concerns about tangible results of democracy (its
deliverables), today all but two Latin American countries qualify as functioning (if
somewhat flawed) democracies.
Democracy is, for now, to quote Linz and Stepan (1996, 15), “the only game in
town” in Latin America. With that problem resolved, social scientists have turned
their attention to a new problem: the quality of said democracies:
How far are today’s democratically elected governments from what was
promised to the electorate prior to transition?
Specifically, what are the main strengths and weaknesses of each of the
region’s democracies?
You will tackle these questions by conducting an audit of the quality of
democracy in a Latin American country of your choosing. This assignment combined
with class lectures on the larger political trends in the region’s recent history, will
provide you with a more detailed and nuanced picture of Latin American Politics.
B. Assignment
1) You are to research and write a policy memo evaluating the state of democracy Argentina. The memo should
be about 2,500 words or 10 pages long (double-spaced).
2) Begin by understanding the concept of democratic quality and the ways in which
it can assessed. Quality of democracy in the country you select should be assessed
following the framework developed by Levine and Molina (2011). Said framework
evaluates the quality of a country’s democracy based on five criteria:
1) Electoral Decision; 2) Participation; 3) Responsiveness; 4.) Accountability;
and 5) Sovereignty.

Azuma Introduction tells that people who were born in Japan and later on shifted to America for studies had the right to express their views without any restrictions. Both the Tateishi and the Hoashi had not gotten a chance to become leaders in the Japenese colonist community, and they were not even recognized in America. “East is West West is East” (Azuma, 2005 p9). However, their routes were not highly valued compared to their expressions, especially during their times. These two communities had the capability of offering their shared predicament comprehensibly in public. Linking with the article on Mercantilists, Colonialists, and Laborers, the dilemma of these communities living through the claimed the separation for the East-West separation and linked binaries. The article also concentrates on the global history of Japanese immigrants and the procedure of creating the racial process. One of the first examples of applying statistical analysis in the social sciences comes from W.E.B. Du Bois, a renowned African American scholar and civil rights activist. In 1899, he published The Philadelphia Negro, a groundbreaking study of the population of the 7th ward of Philadelphia. Du Bois relied on survey data he collected himself from 5000 residents. By relying on quantitative analyses, Du Bois was able to provide evidence that prevalent, contemporary discriminatory policies along with unequal opportunity created and perpetuated poverty and low socio-economic status. This research challenged the racist views held by many white Philadelphians at the time that African Americans were somehow inferior.
Using survey data based on sound research design allows scholar-practitioners to compute frequencies and percentages in order to explore social problems and potentially reshape how people define problems in ways that can effect positive social change.

This document summarizes a study of online petitions from the platform Avaaz.org. The researchers collected data on 366,214 petitions to analyze patterns in authorship, social media sharing, languages, and geographic origins. They found heavy-tailed distributions for prolific authors and social media shares. Signatures and social shares were strongly correlated except for some Indonesian petitions with millions of signatures but few shares, likely due to a past technical bug. The data also provided evidence of multilingual countries and influence of global leaders. intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance
(ISR). Yet the U.S. military cannot legally collect intelligence on U.S. citizens. Consequently, the action, as performed during the hurricane recovery operations described here, is known as
incident awareness and assessments
(IAA). For some, the difference between these terms is merely semantics; for many, IAA differs both symbolically and practically from ISR, if not in how information is collected, then in how it is used and the motivation behind the collection. Jim completed ratings of the concepts self, ideal self, father, and mother using the semantic differential (
Chapter 5
), a simple rating scale. Although the semantic differential is not the exact measure recommended by Rogers, its results can be related to Rogerian theory since its procedures have a phenomenological quality and assess perceptions of self and ideal self.
First, consider how Jim perceives his self. Based on the semantic differential, Jim sees himself as intelligent, friendly, sincere, kind, and basically good—as a wise person who is humane and interested in people. At the same time, other ratings suggest that he does not feel free to be expressive and uninhibited. Thus, he rates himself as reserved, introverted, inhibited, tense, moral, and conforming. There is a curious mixture of perceptions: being involved, deep, sensitive, and kind while also being competitive, selfish, and disapproving. There is also the interesting combination of perceiving himself as being good and masculine but simultaneously weak and insecure. One gets the impression of an individual who would like to believe that he is basically good and capable of.

Summarize the methodology (national survey, statewide survey, etc.; dates conducted; sample size; margin of error; target population-adults, registered voters, likely voters, etc.; survey mode – telephone, cell phone, landline, internet, mixed). 3. Discuss the most important/interesting finding (e.g., Trump leading Clinton by 9 points). 4. Discuss how this finding is similar to or different from other polls conducted recently. 5. Discuss the second most interesting finding (e.g., 1% of African American likely voters say they will vote for Trump). 6.
