21. Planning your search
• Good to spend some time planning – it’ll help to refine your
question and save time in the long run
• Need to break your search down into concepts – this is how
databases need to be searched to get the best out of them
• Need to think about different synonyms/word endings
• This also means you’ll have a neater search strategy – easier to
spot mistakes, amend, and for others to follow
22. Free-Text searches
• Searches for exact word(s) you type in, can
miss papers if authors have used different
terminology.
• They don’t search the full-text of the article,
relies on good informative title/abstracts, not
always the case
• Search techniques to help compensate
• Can still miss things….
23. Subject heading searches
There are people whose job it is to do this
Retrieves articles based on what they are about
regardless of terminology used e.g. get back both
alcohol misuse AND abuse
You can also map your search concepts to “index”
terms that are used consistently by the database to
describe a topic.
25. 3 step process of appraisal
1. Identify the research method used
-Quantitative OR qualitative
2. Identify the research methodology & whether it is appropriate
-RCT or Systematic review?
3. Checklists to focus your appraisal
- CASP
Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine
Oxford Handbook of Perioperative Practice
Oxford Textbook of Medicine
Oxford Textbook of Critical Care
Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine
Oxford Handbook of Perioperative Practice
Oxford Textbook of Medicine
Oxford Textbook of Critical Care
They will be very interested in this. This is a new addition earlier this year (previously was Dynamed Plus).
Evidence-based clinical decision support tool: latest research evidence, guidelines, expert opinions.
Also available as a mobile app with offline content. UCLH does have the UpToDate Mobile App, which doesn’t include the offline app content.
Need to re-verify affiliation with a subscribed organisation once every 90 days: http://www.uptodate.com/home/maintaining-access
Alternatives are Mendeley and Zotero
So why is Critical Appraisal relevant?
A good example of a journal article distorted or cited despite inaccuracies or methodology flaws is the MMR & autism paper by Wakefield & colleagues from 1998
