industries. Over 100 years later that’s still exactly
what Sprott Shaw provides.
Sprott Shaw offers a different option beyond what is
currently expected of the private and public sectors
within the educational system. We offer accredited,
relevant, respected education, and training delivered
in a modern way. Also, our size and history sets us apart

The future job prospects for this group remain at “above
average” with projected new jobs and openings due to
retirements (between now and 2015) remaining high.
Employment growth projections vary considerably between
occupations. These variations will depend mainly on the
prospects for economic growth in each industrial sector, but
will also depend on each industry’s business structure and
on the impact technology has on middle management
functions in large organizations.

using the most up-to-date knowledge and tools. New methods
allow brokers to be more productive and to respond to market
conditions faster.

and exporting all kinds of goods. They prepare and process
import/export documents and other forms for clients,
according to customs regulations, laws and procedures.

advice to clients on export and import restrictions, tariff
systems, letters of credit, insurance requirements, and other
customs-related matters. In some cases they may represent
clients before administrative tribunals or in other dealings
with government officials. Most use computerized information
management systems and on-line computer networks, such as
the Internet, to communicate and gather information.

Employment in this occupational group is projected to increase
in the next few years. This is a great time to enter this field
because many jobs will become available due to a high level of
retiring workers now through 2015.
Entry-level positions often provide considerable potential for

individuals with strong initiative who are willing to continuously
learn new skills and upgrade old ones are the most likely
candidates for promotion.
Payroll Administrators are specifically concerned with
employee pay and benefits. They maintain employee records
(for example, attendance and overtime) and use the records

These professionals represent a growing proportion of the
total clerical and administrative positions. With the growth in
new technologies, administrative officers are able to perform
and manage a wider range of tasks giving managers more time
to deal with higher level tasks. The fast-growing small business
sector increasingly requires the services of this occupational
group. Those in this field are usually not subject to major
swings related to business cycles, but are affected more by
changes in organizations and technology. Due to the large
size of this group, even an average growth rate will provide a
significant number of job openings.
The role of administrative officer can vary tremendously
depending on the organization and work load. Business
Administrative officers oversee creating a variety
of organizational procedures, set work priorities,
and manage the supply of administrative services, such
as reports, data entry, ordering supplies, and coordinating

The two most recent labour market studies in BC have both
come to the same conclusion—tourism in BC is a growth
industry. There has been speculation that there will be an
increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Although this
is great news, it does pose some challenges, not the least
of which is establishing a strategy to make sure that BC has
enough skilled people in the right place at the right time.
If you are interested in working in the accommodation industry,
positions as a front desk agent, housekeeper or bell person are
great ways to get an introduction to this sector. These front-
line staff members have the advantage of learning about the
various aspects of the hotel business (and an opportunity to
climb the corporate ladder).
For those who are more interested in being behind the
scenes, the accommodation industry also requires workers for
business and trade-related positions—including accountants,
marketers, cooks, bakers and carpenters.
So, whether you’re interested in being on the front lines or
behind the scenes, working at a mountain resort, wilderness
campground or a cosmopolitan hotel in the heart of a
bustling city—a career in this dynamic industry can definitely
accommodate you.

Rapid growth in the accommodation and food services industry
is being driven by a rapidly growing tourism sector, and this will
create employment growth for this occupation. This industry,
which employs all of these workers, is expected to grow faster
than the all-industry average due to retiring workers and
industry growth. There has been speculation that there will be
an increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Vancouver is
rated as one of the top ten destination cities in the world and
will continue to attract tourists in the near future. Graduates
in this industry will assist with all aspects of guest services
and present a positive impression of the establishment. They
make room reservations, provide information and services to
guests and receive payment for services. They are employed
by hotels, motels and resorts.
Workers in this occupational group make room reservations,

COURSE LISTINGS: TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT24 Tourism/Hospitality Management Career Opportunities Travel Consultant Destination Coordinator Reservations Agent The two most recent labour market studies in BC have both come to the same conclusion—tourism in BC is a growth industry. There has been speculation that there will be an increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Although this is great news, it does pose some challenges, not the least of which is establishing a strategy to make sure that BC has enough skilled people in the right place at the right time. If you are interested in working in the accommodation industry, positions as a front desk agent, housekeeper or bell person are great ways to get an introduction to this sector. These front- line staff members have the advantage of learning about the various aspects of the hotel business (and an opportunity to climb the corporate ladder). For those who are more interested in being behind the scenes, the accommodation industry also requires workers for business and trade-related positions—including accountants, marketers, cooks, bakers and carpenters. So, whether you’re interested in being on the front lines or behind the scenes, working at a mountain resort, wilderness campground or a cosmopolitan hotel in the heart of a bustling city—a career in this dynamic industry can definitely accommodate you.
