A long time ago our founders Robert James Sprott
and William Henry Shaw had a vision. They wanted
to create a college offering the right programs to
meet the needs of the current economy and broader
community; programs that provided students with
relevant skills for meaningful jobs in high growth
industries. Over 100 years later that’s still exactly
what Sprott Shaw provides.

Our pathway programs are designed for students who

techniques. All FITT skills courses meet the standards of
international business and trade training as prescribed by
the International Association of Trade Training Organizations
(IATTO). Successful completion of all eight FITT skills courses
provides the student with a FITT Diploma, accredited by
IATTO and satisfies the educational requirement for the CITP
(Certified International Trade Professional) designation. The
combination of the basic management skills from ABME with
the international skills of FITT and a 32 week coop experience
will open many global doors for the student.

are being created as trade grows. According to industry
sources, finding qualified workers to fill openings in this
field is difficult.
Brokers must offer their customers a high level of service by
using the most up-to-date knowledge and tools. New methods
allow brokers to be more productive and to respond to market
conditions faster.
International Trade and Business Managers work in importing
and exporting all kinds of goods. They prepare and process
import/export documents and other forms for clients,
according to customs regulations, laws and procedures.
They arrange for the payment of fees associated with
transporting, storing and importing goods. They also provide
advice to clients on export and import restrictions, tariff
systems, letters of credit, insurance requirements, and other
customs-related matters. In some cases they may represent
clients before administrative tribunals or in other dealings
with government officials. Most use computerized information
management systems and on-line computer networks, such as
the Internet, to communicate and gather information.

Sprott Shaw College has partnered with FITT to offer the
FITTskills program. FITT (Forum for International Trade
Training) is an international trade training and professional
certification body. As the only organization of its kind in
the world, FITT sets the standards and designs the training
programs leading to the Certified International Trade
Professional (CITP) designation. FITT’s quality training
programs impart knowledge and practical skills that provide
a competitive advantage to trade practitioners while elevating
their position in world markets.
FITTskills is a highly practical, hands-on series of courses that
focus on the fundamental aspects of international business.
Students may register for these courses as part of our
International Trade programs. Upon successful completion of
all eight (8) courses and assessments, students will be awarded
a FITT Diploma in International Trade. This diploma fulfills the
educational requirement of the CITP designation.
The CITP designation is earned by obtaining the FITT diploma
and meeting standards and requirements set by FITT. These
requirements are:
• Complete the educational requirement by achieving
the FITT diploma;
• Complete or prove a minimum of one year, full-time,
International trade work experience;
• Agree to the Standards of Ethical Conduct;
• Pay the annual dues and maintain the membership in
good standing; and
• Engage in ongoing professional development.

in the next few years. This is a great time to enter this field
because many jobs will become available due to a high level of
retiring workers now through 2015.
Entry-level positions often provide considerable potential for
advancement. Industry sources indicate that self-managed
individuals with strong initiative who are willing to continuously
learn new skills and upgrade old ones are the most likely
candidates for promotion.
Payroll Administrators are specifically concerned with
employee pay and benefits. They maintain employee records
(for example, attendance and overtime) and use the records
to calculate pay and benefit entitlements. They also prepare
and check statements of earnings and provide information
to employees on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective
agreement terms.
Once education requirements are met, grads can complete
and submit the Application for Certification to receive the
Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the
Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).

business services firms, and transportation companies. Sales
representatives for wholesale trade who are supervisors are
also included in this unit group.
Sales representatives promote sales to existing clients,
identify and solicit potential clients and provide clients with
a presentation on the benefits and uses of goods or services.
They estimate or quote prices, credit terms, warranties and
delivery dates, and they prepare or oversee preparation of
sales contracts. They also consult with clients after a sale
to resolve problems and provide ongoing support. Also,
they review and adapt to information regarding product
innovations, competitors and market conditions.
There is a high level of competition for work in this group.
Those who have strong communication and marketing skills
will have a better chance of obtaining work.

These professionals represent a growing proportion of the
total clerical and administrative positions. With the growth in
new technologies, administrative officers are able to perform
and manage a wider range of tasks giving managers more time
to deal with higher level tasks. The fast-growing small business
sector increasingly requires the services of this occupational
group. Those in this field are usually not subject to major
swings related to business cycles, but are affected more by
changes in organizations and technology. Due to the large
size of this group, even an average growth rate will provide a
significant number of job openings.
The role of administrative officer can vary tremendously
depending on the organization and work load. Business
Administrative officers oversee creating a variety
of organizational procedures, set work priorities,
and manage the supply of administrative services, such
as reports, data entry, ordering supplies, and coordinating
security services. They may also handle some petty cash
and direct the work of clerical staff. They are a very large
occupational group and employed throughout the private
as well as public sectors.

The two most recent labour market studies in BC have both
come to the same conclusion—tourism in BC is a growth
industry. There has been speculation that there will be an
increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Although this
is great news, it does pose some challenges, not the least
of which is establishing a strategy to make sure that BC has
enough skilled people in the right place at the right time.
If you are interested in working in the accommodation industry,
positions as a front desk agent, housekeeper or bell person are
great ways to get an introduction to this sector. These front-
line staff members have the advantage of learning about the
various aspects of the hotel business (and an opportunity to
climb the corporate ladder).
For those who are more interested in being behind the
scenes, the accommodation industry also requires workers for
business and trade-related positions—including accountants,
marketers, cooks, bakers and carpenters.
So, whether you’re interested in being on the front lines or

is being driven by a rapidly growing tourism sector, and this will
create employment growth for this occupation. This industry,
which employs all of these workers, is expected to grow faster
than the all-industry average due to retiring workers and
industry growth. There has been speculation that there will be
an increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Vancouver is
rated as one of the top ten destination cities in the world and
will continue to attract tourists in the near future. Graduates
in this industry will assist with all aspects of guest services
and present a positive impression of the establishment. They
make room reservations, provide information and services to
guests and receive payment for services. They are employed
by hotels, motels and resorts.
Workers in this occupational group make room reservations,
register arriving guests, assign rooms and answer enquiries
regarding hotel services and registration by letter,
telephone and in person. They also respond to guests’
enquiries, requests and complaints. They compile and
check daily record sheets, guest accounts, receipts and
vouchers using computerized or manual systems, and they
present statements of charges to departing guests and receive
payment.

the Early Childhood Education basic program. Greater
opportunities exist for those who provide special needs
daycare. As licensed care expands, caregivers with formal
credentials will have better opportunities.
There are a range of child, youth, and family focused support
programs and interventions in BC, to help promote a child’s
healthy development, maximize quality of life, assist families in
their role as primary caregivers and support full participation
in community life.
This speciality provides advanced training in ECE competencies
for individuals interested in working with children with
exceptionalities and/or infant and toddler care.

This program gives the student the skills and occupational
competencies necessary in the industry today based
upon the Ministry for Children and Family Development
approved curriculum.
Students will develop a broad range of skills through the study
and practice of our certified and approved courses. They
will be able to carefully select age-appropriate materials for
young children and develop programs and activities for the
important early years of learning. They will become nurturing
and understanding Caregivers/Educators who will implement
these carefully selected materials and activities to help
promote the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and early
literacy development in each child.
They also observe children and communicate professionally,
when appropriate, children’s progress and/or needs with
parents, other staff members and individuals involved with the
child’s development. They may also supervise and coordinate
the activities of other Early Childhood Educators and ECE

patients and their families across the lifespan in a variety
of hospital, community, residential care and home care

This Diploma Program prepares Internationally Educated
Nurses to become Licensed Practical Nurse in British Columbia.
English Communication component is designed to enhance
the English language skills of Internationally Educated
Nurses. It includes lessons in improving skills in reading
and comprehension, written communication and oral
communication.
Medical English component is designed for learners whose
language is not English who are interested in learning common
medical language in an English-speaking healthcare setting.
Gerontological Nursing Essential for Internationally Educated
Nurses is designed to introduce essential foundations of
Canadian Practical Nursing and care of the older adult. This
course enhances nursing knowledge and skills to be eligible
to write the CPNRE. Learners will be given the opportunity to
integrate nursing skills with the CLPNBC Standards of Practice
and upgrade safe practices as required by CLPNBC.
Note: There are additional requirements set out by
the College of Licensed Practical Nurse of British Columbia
(CLPNBC). Students are responsible for determining if they
meet these requirements and for having their credentials
evaluated by International Credential Evaluation Service
(ICES).

The occupational objective of this program is to prepare the
student to gain employment in: hospitals, clinics, insurance
companies, public health care agencies, and long-term care
facilities. In the workplace, they will perform non-clinical tasks
usually under the supervision of nursing staff and provide
the link between patients, physicians, nursing staff and other
departments. Job duties and environments vary by place of
employment. Some Hospital Unit Clerks are employed part-
time or work evening or weekend shifts.
The job outlook for qualified unit clerks is very good due to
advances in medical technology. According to the Health
Careers Center, job opportunities are expected to be plentiful
for health unit clerks, with growth mirroring that of all health
care professions.

The need for Health Care Assistants, Resident Care
Attendants, Home Support Workers, Long-term Care Aides,
and Live-In Care givers continues to grow at an increasing
rate. Health Care Assistants provide and maintain a safe
and clean environment in health care facilities and in
patient’s homes.
They provide clients with assistance in activities of daily living
such as bathing, dressing, and grooming. Sometimes they
serve meal trays and feed patients. To help patients recover,
they lift, turn or massage patients and they may also supervise
patients’ exercise routines.
They take basic measurements, such as patients’ blood
pressure temperature and pulse. They collect specimens,
such as urine, administer suppositories, enemas, and perform
other procedures. They transport patients in wheelchairs
or stretchers for treatment or surgery, carry medical items
(messages, reports, requisitions and specimens) from one
department to another, and maintain an inventory of supplies.
They provide basic patient care including supplying and
emptying bed pans.
The additional Early Childhood courses will provide the
students with the skills to provide a caring and educational
environment where children are able to thrive. They will
contribute to the well-being of the family as well.
This program gives the student the necessary skills to belong
to this “in-high-demand” occupation. Live-ins usually work
longer hours; however, if they work evenings or weekends
they may get time off. Although living-in may isolate them
from their family and friends; these workers often become
part of their employer’s family and may derive satisfaction
from caring for them.

Health Care Assistants (HCAs) are prepared to work in
both healthcare facilities and community agencies. In these
roles they are important and valued members of the health

families. HCA’s provide personal care assistance and services
in a caring manner that recognizes and supports the unique
needs, abilities and backgrounds of clients and residents.
They work as members of a health care team in a variety
of settings with direction and supervision from other
health professionals.
The HCA Program is designed to provide students with
opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes
necessary to function effectively as front-line care-givers,
and respected members of the healthcare team, in community
and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of
a health care professional, graduates provide person-centred
care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical,
emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients/residents.

Medical Office Assistants perform a variety of administrative
duties in doctors’ offices, hospitals, medical clinics and
other medical settings as well as support of managers
and professional employers. They are employed in offices
throughout the public and private sectors.
The duties of Medical Assistants also include specialized tasks.
They schedule and confirm medical appointments, deliver
messages between doctors and patients, type medical records
and reports from handwritten notes, and interview patients
to complete forms and case histories. They also make sure
doctors get paid, by completing insurance as well as other
claim forms and handling billing procedures. They may order
medical supplies as well as regular office supplies. It should
be noted that medical assistants are very often referred to as
medical office secretaries, and related training programs in
this province may also use that title.

Pharmacy assistants help licensed Pharmacists provide
medication and other health care products to patients.
Assistants usually perform routine tasks to help prepare
prescribed medication, such as counting tablets and
labelling bottles. They also perform administrative duties,
such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating
cash registers. Assistants refer any questions regarding
prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to
a pharmacist.
In large pharmacies and health-systems, pharmacy assistants
with significant training, experience and certification can be
promoted to supervisory positions, mentoring and training
pharmacy assistants with less experience. Some may advance
into specialty positions such as chemo therapy assistants
and nuclear pharmacy assistants. Others move into sales.

The growing need for assistance with pregnant teenagers,
homeless persons, children with special needs, and those
with substance abuse problems will maintain the need for
these workers. Growth is also expected in the area of First
Nations outreach and community development, especially
for youth and in rehabilitation. Employment opportunities
are much better for those who have appropriate post-
secondary education.
Community and social service workers administer and
implement a variety of social assistance programs and
community services (life skills workshops, substance abuse
treatment programs and other community and social service
programs). They assist clients in dealing with personal and
social problems. They are employed by social service and
government agencies, group homes, correctional facilities and
other establishments.
Note that successfully completing EC100 give students an
opportunity to apply for the ECE Assistant license with the
registry ot MCFD. All ECE courses included in this program are
transferable to the ECE program.

The growing population of elderly persons, the mentally
disabled, and developmentally challenged will maintain the
need for these workers. Community support workers support
and aid recipients of social assistance and pensions. They
provide assistance to clients living in group homes and half-
way houses by facilitating and supervising their activities. They
may work in crisis intervention and emergency shelter services.
They also can assist in evaluating the effectiveness of
treatment programs by tracking (observing, reporting
and documenting) clients’ behavioral changes and responses
to interventions. Community support workers maintain
contact with other social service agencies and other members
of a multi-disciplinary team involved with their clients to
provide information and to obtain feedback on clients’ overall
progress.
This work is done under the supervision of social workers
(Licensed health care professionals—could be RN’s OT’s PT’s
Mental Health Case Managers, Social Workers, Dr.’s) or health
care professionals.

REFUND POLICY
CAD$350 dollars application fee is non-refundable.
Refunds before the program of study begins:
1. If written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution less than seven (7) calendar
days after the contract is made, and before the commencement of the period of instruction
in the contract, the institution may retain the lesser of 5% of the total fees due
under the contract or CAD$250.
2. Subject to subsection (1), if written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution
thirty (30) calendar days or more before the commencement of the period of instruction
under the contract, or CAD$1,000.
3. Subject to subsection (1), if written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution less
than thirty (30) calendar days before the commencement of the period of instruction
under the contract, or CAD$1,300.
Refunds after the program of study starts:
1. If written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution, or a student is dismissed,
within 10% of the period of instruction in the contract, the institution may retain
30% of the total fees due under the contract.
2. If written notice of withdrawal is received by the institution, or a student is dismissed, after
10% and before 30% of the period of instruction in the contract, the institution
may retain 50% of the total fees due under the contract.
3. If a student withdraws or is dismissed after 30% of the period of instruction in
the contract, no refund is required.
