Rhetoric
Learning about Audience, Purpose, Context, Author, and Genre.
Assignments:
Resume/Visual Resume – This assignment helped me out
tremendously this year. I was able to learn how to make myself stand
out through writing. I also was able to research job listings and include
skills in my writing that would make my resume stronger. I also was
able to learn how to make my context stronger.
Instructional Mobile App – This assignment was a group project
and taught me not only to focus on a specific audience, but it also
helped me learn about purpose. Our group chose to redo a car manual
for a Nissan Altima. We also learned how to grasp a certain audiences
attention and make the app useful to users,
Usability Testing/Report – The proposal was important and
allowed us to focus on rhetoric. I was able to learn how to write
effective and persuasively. This project will help me with grant writing,
which is a big thing in the non-profit and addiction field.
Video Presentation – The presentation was all about connecting
with an audience and making sure it was understandable. This was
useful because I was able to hear different opinions in my group and
see how people think differently. We also had to write a script which we
learned about how important work flow is in the professional setting.
Proposal – The proposal brought together audience, purpose, and
context together. We had to reach out to a specific audience and try to
persuade them to make our mobile app. We also had to make sure the
context was professional enough for them to consider.

Design Assignments:
Resume/ Visual Resume – The resume taught me how to set up a resume by
myself and make it a unique design. I also learned how to decrease the “white”
space. We also learned how to catch the audience’s eye and really speak to the
reader through design.
Instructional Mobile App – The mobile application allowed our group to
Marvel app to design a mobile application. This assignment allowed up to
understand how to make our app more appealing to the user.
Usability Testing/ Report – Our group also had to make pre and post
surveys before café testing our application. We were able to learn how our colors
and set up of the app was not appeal to others. We were also able to learn from a
class speaker about how to make the app more appealing to users. This helped
me a lot because I was able to take the design lesson from the guest speaker and
use it toward my Etsy business. I designed my own banners!
Video Presentation – The main thing I learned from this project was that you
have to keep your audience interested! Our group used constructive criticism from
our usability testing and transferred it to this project. We were also glad that in
the Chapter 17 Review, it went over ideas and techniques for presentations!
Proposal – The proposal taught me how to go from a fun design to a
professional design. Dr. Rauch helped us with which fonts to use and the spacing.
We also had to split up the proposal into sections. I learned how to research and
write the cost and benefits!

Writing Assignments:
Resume/ Visual Resume – The resume and visual resume were
important assignments because I have to check spelling and
grammar. This taught me how to write professionally!
Instructional Mobile App – The mobile app allowed our group
to learn about proof reading other people’s work. We also were
reaching out to a broad audience and had to make sure our tone and
grammar was correct.
Usability Testing/Report – The usability report and testing
challenged our group. We were given constructive criticism over our
grammar. We had to go back and correct a lot of spelling and
grammar to make sure people took our app seriously.
Video Presentation – The video presentation also involved
writing a script. This was also challenging because one person wrote
the script and I read off of it. This is where I learned to be sensitive of
others feelings and go over what I believed was grammar and tone
issues. This helped develop some of my leadership skills!
Proposal – The proposal brought together spelling, grammar, and
style! Our last group project was all about making sure our proposal
was academic, persuasive, and concise technical writing!
LearningObjectives:

Resume/ Visual Resume – For the resume and visual resume, I was
able to learn how to create a resume on a word document and how to
use Slide Docs! I communicated and collaborated with Dr. Rauch to
create a great finished product.
Instructional Mobile App – For the instructional mobile app I was
able to work in a great group and learn from the other girls! I was able to
apply my skills to the app and they were able to apply other skills. We
learned how to create an app with Marvel. We also learned about Story
Board.
Usability Testing/Report – For the usability test and report my
group and I had to café test. This allowed us to work with others from
different populations. We used technology to create pre and post
surveys. We were also able to all develop leadership skills and learn how
to effectively work with others.
Video Presentation – The video presentation was a challenge for
our group because we had to overcome so differences in the way we
wanted to do the script for the presentation. We used word to create the
script and we used YouTube and iMovie for the presentation.

we really valued using the wikis in our group on blackboard. We also

Cultural
Considerations
Assignments:
Resume/ Visual Resume – For the resume and visual resume, I
had to realize that someone from a different culture may be reading
or viewing it.
Instructional Mobile App – The mobile app was made for
someone who drives a Nissan Altima. Many different people could be
using it. We wanted to make sure that people around the world of
from different cultures would be able to use it.
Usability Testing/Report – The usability testing allowed us to
have people from many different cultures and many different ages
look at and critique our app. We also were able to ask if they were
able to understand it despite their culture.
Video Presentation – The presentation was important because
we wanted people from cross cultures to understand. This is where
subtitles and speaking slower became beneficial.
Proposal – The proposal was similar to the resume and visual
resume in the sense that we did not know who would view it. We had
to make sure that people from other cultures could understand and
would want to develop our app!
